( Rennara's Proposed Map of the Water Nation )

Once on the road and past the capital city, Rennara set off at a run. It would take her three days to get where she was heading on foot, even at the breakneck pace she was accustomed to taking. The weather was cold, but dry. She was self sufficient, and well equipped enough to be able to acquire provisions along the way and wasn't terribly worried. Besides, she had something to find out. The hope she held would do more to sustain her than any supplies she might have brought.

The crow continued to stay on Renna's tail, it's eyees watching her every foot step. Any time it started to lag behind, it beat its wings faster, aided by the smal amount of power Crow had allowed it.

The sun was sitting low to the west as Rennara reached the borders of the forest. She slowed her pace and walked just off the path into the dim light under the canopy. There was a cave she knew of less than a mile to the west. She collected branches as she walked, scoping out the area for signs of what might be her dinner.

In about ten minutes she'd reached the cave. She dug into the ground with the toe of her boot, creating a safe circle to build a fire in and stacked the wood there. As she walked about collecting leaves for her bedding she heard a twig snap behind her. Renna froze moving only her head to see what creature was there behind her. She could tell the creature was hiding in the undergrowth just to her right, Renna slowly bent over pulling the dagger from her boot.

As the sun was setting, covering the woods in darkness, Renna sat by the small fire she'd built spitting a freshly skinned rabbit. The pelt she had burried in the dirt to keep any critters away from where she'd be sleeping. The smell of roasting rabbit made her mouth water, even as her thoughts were focused on her dark haired brother.

Renna lay curled up asleep in a pile of leaves. What had been the fire ouside was now a cold pile of ash and the moon was sinking toward the horizon. A sudden chill brought her out of her dreams. She sat upright, ears straining in the darkness. She could've sworn she heard something when she'd awakened. Something didn't feel quite right.
Renna slipped her boots back on and re-armed herself before peeking out the small cave's entrance. She couldn't see into the dark very well, but she knew something, or someone was out there. She heard a noise comming from directly in front of her. An arrow whizzed right past her head as she pulled herself back inside. ~Bandits?~ she wondered. ~ No...not bandits...they'd have been noisier. Bandits use fear as their tactic, not stealth. Assasins, maybe... But who'd want to kill me?"
She grabbed the thin travel blanket she always carried with her, and threw it over her head and torso to hide the lighter colors. Sitting at the very edge of the cave, she unsheathed her blade and held it out just enough to see the reflection of two men clad in grey emerging from the foliage. There was no way out and she was outnumbered.

Renna closed her eyes and took a breath. "Goddess help me in my hour of need." she whispered into the dark. She lunged out of the entrance with a loud warcry, bringing her wakizashi down on the neck of the nearest assasin, severing his head from his body. She wrapped an arm under the shoulder, using the body as a human shield as she backed away from the other. Arrows aipped through the air, into the body and the trees around her. Renna noticed a length of rope attatched to the belt and she pulled it off, looping it around her neck. "This may be of some use." She said as she dropped the body now that she was out of range.
She ran headlong throught the trees, tying her dagger to the end of the rope. As she reached the North Road, she looked around for signs of others before tossing the dagger end of the rope at a thick branch high up in a roadside tree. After it had looped around the branch a few times she hoisted herself up to the branch as quickly as she could.
Renna sat on the top branch hiding in the shadows, the rope wrapped around her shoulder. As the watery light of pre-dawn began to fill the road, the second of the men became visible from his crouched position in one of the bushes. He was looking right at her, but she noticed a few seconds too late, even as she leapt into a lower tree, on of the arrow bolts, struck her in the back just under the shoulderblade. It was a shallow wound, but it hurt like hell.
Not having any ranged weapons put her at a severe dissadvantage. She'd have to use more than just physical skill to get out of this alive. The sun was comming up, and any places to hide were quickly dissapearing. She'd have to take him head on.
Renna took a large branch and pushed hard on it until it snapped right off the tree. As it landed on the ground with a thud, a shower of arrows, struck it with deadly accuracy. She made a loud choked sound, hoping to fool the assasin into believing his job was done. From her perch, she could see him smirking as he walked the breadth of the road, crossbow aimed at the spot where the log had fallen. Her rouse had worked.
The assasin stepped just under the branch where she stood. As Renna leaned over, preparing to leap down on him, he looked up. It was too late for both of them. She was already falling through the air towards him and he had no time to run. He fired a round of bolts up at her, though she was able to smack the most deadly away a number struck her shoulders and chest. She landed on him hard, snapping his spine even as she brought her blade down on his throat.
Renna grabbed the travel pack off the body of the assasin and tossed it over her shoulder. Bloodied, injured, and just plain dirty... she set off down the road towards the small town of woodcutters.

The crow had fallen far behind, and completely lost sight of Reena. It turned back and reported its failure to Crow. "It's alright." Crow grabbed a bag and dropped his sketch pad. with the attack already sketched onto it. "I have a trip to make anyway." He started out along the road, heading towards an old, familiar spot, into the dying sun.

Evening had come by the time Renna reached the village of Taera Knoll. Had she been traveling at normal speed she would have passed the village around noon. Smoke poured from every chimney, and mothers were calling children in for their evening meals. At the east end of the village, farthest away from the road, sat an inn. The young woman behind the counter raised her eyebrows as Renna walked in the door.
"My Goodness!" she said. "I had no idea the roads had become so dangerous!"
Renna chuckled slightly "Neither did I..."
"My my.... can I get you a room?"
"I'm afraid I can't afford one. I was wondering if I might be able to board in your hayloft tonight and tomorrow night in exchange for a day's labor?"
"That sounds fine...but wouldn't you prefer to stay inside? I'm sure I can clear out one of our-"
"No, no." Renna interupted her. "I'd prefer to stay out of the way of your paying guests. I hear the hot spring is quite a draw this time of year."
"You sure heard right! We also just renovated the bathhouses, new electric lighting for the indoor baths!"
"I'd love to see them sometime. Perhaps I'll stop here again sometime when I can pay propperly."
"Well...I'd be happy to have you. My name is Tannah. Now, if you're sure you won't take a room...at least let me offer you a small meal and some hot water to wash up with."
"Thank you. I am Renna and I would be most grateful of such generosity." she replied with a slight bow.
The woman smiled and nodded.
"Why don't you head on out there and wash up" She filled a bucket with hot water from the cauldron over the fire, and handed it and a towel to Renna. "I'll call you in when I've finished serving supper to the other guests."Renna took the bucket and towel " Thank you Tannah." she said before turning and heading out the door towards the stables around the back.
After climbing up into the loft and bathing Renna opened the pack that she'd taken from the body and laid the contents out on the wooden planks where she sat. "Bandages...Poisons...Travel papers...What's this?" She thought aloud as she sorted through the items. She opened a bound leather folder full of papers, one with a drawing of her face as well as a few random facts about her past and......fighting style. "These guys must be pretty thorough." The others were faces she didn't recognise and most of them had a red stamp over the face. This must have been the list of targets for the assasins.
"Miss Renna? came the woman's voice from the inn.
"Thank You! I'll be right there." Renna called back.
Renna sat down and was given a hot bowl of hearty broth and a decent chunk of bread to eat.
"You'll want to get to sleep fairly soon. You will be starting your work as soon as the sun is up." The inkeeper explained. "First thing will be cleaning the stables. Once you're done with that I'll make you a bite to eat. After that you'll clean the dishes and main hall. That ought to take most of the morning. You can have whatever is leftover from lunchtime once all the guests have finished eating. When you're done eating, you'll head out to one of the smaller springs and wash clothes. Oh! Do you hunt?" she inqured.
"Yes." Renna replied with a nod.

"Wonderful! You can go catch us some dinner and clean it. My uncle has been away in the capitol and I'm afraid my nephew is not very good at doing either yet. I'll have him chop the wood instead. He'll like that. You can help me with supper and eat with the two of us. Oh! and then you can go use one of the outdoor baths Those aren't so popular due to the cold weather right now...but it will sure feel good after a long hard day."
"Thank you very much...I'm sure it will." Renna said handing her empty dish to Tannah. "I'll see you bright and early... Goodnight." she said as she stepped out the door and headed to the hayloft for some sleep.

Renna watched as a child ran through a mountain meadow. She struggled to catch up with the older boy running in front of her. Both children raced across the grass to a dark haired man holding a pair of sticks. He handed them to the girl and to the boy and stepped back to watch as they practiced dealing blows and parrying. Both children laughed and cheered eachother on, and the man smiled at them. She sat there watching, until a young woman joined them, spreading a canvas on the grass and spreading out an afternoon meal. The four of them sat down all smiles and joy, as if nothing in the world could destroy such a serene picture.
Then without warning everything faded. Renna could hear screams and shouts of panic. The forge was on fire. The stables were burning. The air was thick with smoke. Everything familiar was being washed away in flame. The woman beside her... her mother.

"Hide daughter..." She whispered as calmly as if they'd been sitting by the fire mending shirts. "No matter what, you stay hidden. Don't let your eyes be seen. Be a brave girl and stay put."
"Mother...don't talk like that."
"Take this Renna. It's yours now." She was handed the familiar black laquered wakizashi.
"But...you'll need it Mother."

"Become what I raised you to be. You'll be alright."
She kissed Renna on the forehead.
"Mother?"
With that her mother ran out into the center of the burning village, sword drawn. A man clad in black came up behind her, and though she put up a valliant fight, her sword was flung away and the man grabbed her by the neck.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Renna shot up from the spot where she'd been sleeping. Hot tears rolled down her face and her breath came in as shallow gasps. It had been nearly a year since she'd dreamed of that day. She bent over burying her face into her knees and focused on breathing, drawing her mind away from the nightmare.
The day had been long and grueling, and the hot food sitting in Renna's stomach felt particularly well deserved. She was helping Tannah carry the dishes from supper out to the washtank.
"Miss Renna?" Tannah called to her.
"Hmm?" she answered a bit distantly.
"You've already done enough to earn board for two people. Why don't you let us finish these dishes. I had Kou put a few clean towels out in the loft for you. Go take that bath...Our spring water is renowned for it's curative properties. You could probably use a bit of that."Renna nodded, setting the dishes down on a stool. "Th-"
" OH! And...don't forget to come and see me before you head off in the morning...ok?"
Renna chuckled "I won't...Thank you Tannah....and you too Kou" she said before heading to the stables.
Her clothes lay in a neat pile on a bench next to the extra towels. Her hair was pinned up on top of her head to keep it dry, and she had one of the towels wrapped around herself as she stuck a foot into the wonderfully hot water. She walked down the carved stone steps into the pool discarding the towel as the murky water engulfed her. The minerals in the water stung the still open wounds at first. But after a few minutes, it was nothing but a pleasant warmth when compared to the frigid air around her.
Renna waded over to one of the submerged benches around the edge and sat down on it, bringing her feet up onto the seat and wrapping her arms around her knees. She sighed happily and let her head fall back on the stones behind her. She watched as the white puffs of her breaths appeared and dissapeared before the stars above her. She smiled and closed her eyes, completely determined to do nothing but relax.
Crow continued along his way, keeping his eyes and his hat low. Each passing bystander had probably been a victim at one point or another. A victim of his former cruelty. He avoided many groups of people though every so often, when he passed a theatre troupe, he would stay and talk a while. He would always hold a special place in his heart for the street people. Back in Nir-al-dat, they were the ones who had first accepted him for who he really was, besides his father. As he was layign down one night, a young boy crept up from the troupe's camp, and began digging through his bag. "I wouldn't do that if I were you." Crow muttered, his hat still low over his face. The boy tensed and ran back to his camp. Crow watched him go, then noticed that he was carrying a black rose. Crow grabbed his bag and headed after the boy, dodgin hrouhg the trees after him. He appeared in the clearing seconds after the boy held up th black rose as an offereing to the leader of the troupe. "I would hope that you teach your boys to be a better theif." The man looked up at him. He was old and haggard, and wrinkles ran across his face. "Tell me, do you still play the violin?" Crow smiled and hefted a case out of his bag. "Where do you think the boy got that rose?" He embraced the man who had once been a director who had floated through his kingdom. " You know, you still have yet to tell me your name." Crow smiled again. "As you have yet to tell me yours." The man smiled. "Very well. I will let you travel with us, as long as you promise to play us a song." Crow opened his case. "For the record, how do you know where I'm going?" The man smiled knowingly. "Not everyone is so good about disguising their eyes." Crow laughed and began to strike up a song, picking a chord. And then he played. The tune sang of the dangers held at Ardun Lake, the triumph of saving a life, the sadness of old memories. It sang of anger at th demon, and of worry for the girl's current condition. It told of the humor of the brother, with the bittersweet undertone of his resentment. He ended the song on one long low note, stretching it across the entire camp. The man nodded and handed him back his rose. "And that is why this belongs to you." Crow nodded but then struck up another song, one with a happy, lively tune, that ordered everyone to dance. Severl people produced flute and drums and played along with him, keeping rythmn as best they could. The old danced with the young, the fat with the thin, and people of every race began to spin and swirl and dance. And in the middle of it was Crow, playing like a mad man, his violin seeming to glow. He spun and he danced, playing faster and faster, until the other musicians could no longer keep up. e spun and his feet moved in complicated small movements until he was a whirlwind of darkness and sound, spinning around the enire troupe and the entire song ended with a loud shout from the group. Everyone headed to their tents, happy and tired.
Renna woke up the next morning just after the sun had risen. She felt wonderfully rested as she began packing what few things she now had with her. After cleaning and re-wrapping her injuries, she pulled on her boots and walked over to the inn to bid farewell to Tannah and thank her. The woman was preparing breakfast in the kitchen.
"Well...I'll be going now. I wanted to thank you for letting me stay, and tell you that I'll be sure to repay you in the future. "
"Well then... I packed you a bite to eat. You travel safe Miss Renna. Goddess Bless."
"Thank you again and....Blessings to you as well." She replied taking the small pouch and heading out the door. After she was back on the road, she set off at a swift trot, not wanting to push herself too hard.
By nightfall she'd only reached the edge of the forest. She set up camp under a large tree root. There between the Nalduur and Furin Mountains, the wind seemed to blow without ceasing. Her stomach grumbled with hunger as she curled up under the roots to sleep, but it had gotten too cold to even consider wandering far enough off the road to hunt. She hadn't even built a fire that night. She lay there, drifting off to sleep, remembering that only a day ago she'd been having a wonderful hot bath and a roof over her head.
Crow and the theatre troupe awoke early the next morning, packing away the tents, and moving on their way. The emperatures soon grew cold, but Crow was almost unaffected in his heavy coat. After several miles he turned to the leader of the troupe. "I'm afraid here is where I must part ways with you." The man nodded. "It would seem only right. Keep a sharp eye. We wouldn't want you to be killed," He lowered his voice so only Crow could hear. "Your highness." Crow smiled. "How long have you known?" The man smiled. "Ever since you played that first solo back in Nir-al-dat." The man smiled and began to lead his troupe away. Crow laughed and took out his violin, playing them a farewell.
Renna awoke the next morning shivering, long before the sun had risen. She pulled her small travel blanket up over her head and shoulders. And set off along the road once more. She was hungry and sore, but if she kept going she might make Taminvale just after noon.
After passing the first few peaks, the road became a bit steep in some places, though it was in much better condition than she'd remembered. As she treked higher, she noticed little piles of snow here and there on the roadside sparkling in the morning sunshine.
She'd been traveling most of the day when finally she reached the highest point of the road. From the spot where she stood, she looked down into the shallow valley. Only a few more miles away lay the high stone walls of her home. Smoke billowed up into the sky from the forge, joined by smaller tendrils from the houses and huts. The long road had been worth it, just to stand here and look at it. The evergreeen woods surrounding Taminvale stood out like green gems against the blanket of snow. Renna took a deep breath and set off at a run. She could be there and having something warm to eat within the hour.
