For those who don't know, I'm Diabetic. I may have only confirmed it at the beginning of November 2006, but I've known I would be a high risk for it since my late teens. Diabeties affects both sides of my family including my parents and since it can be hereditaty, it was considered enevitable for it to affect me as well. But I possibly could have postponed it a little longer had I eaten wiser and watched my weight better. I have what is known as type 2 Diabeties. My body still produces some insulin, but for some reason it isn't as effective. Either there is just too much sugar in my system, or my body isn't accepting it. I am currently taking 2 medications to help encourage my pancreas to produce more insulin, allow my body to accept the sugars more efficiently, and reduce the amount of excess sugar secreted by the liver. Type 1 Diabeties (also known as Juvenile as it mostly affects younger people) is when the pancreas no longer produces any insulin. And the injections are required. Gestational Diabetes is a form of Type 2 Diabeties that occures only during pregnancy. Quite often, once the child is born blood sugar levels do return to normal. These are some of the common symptoms of Diabeties • fatigue, drowsiness • frequent urination • extreme thirst • excessive hunger • sudden/unusual weight loss • blurred vision • cuts and bruises slow to heal • genital infections • tingling or numbness in hands or feet • mood swings • frequent headaches For more information http://www.diabetes.ca/ http://www.diabetes.org/home.jsp

Thank you, Thyna. I've always wondered myself about diabetes, but I have never asked a doctor about it. I didn't want to take any tests. I'm pretty sure I don't have diabetes, but I am pretty sure that if I continue eating the way I have been, I could be on the fast track towards it.
Thank you for the information! heart (I'm glad you don't have type 1!! shots are icky!)

Its good that you spread knowledge about these kind of things.
I'm 14. And I am insulin resistant. Thats a light way of saying borderline diabetic. I watch everything I eat, and cant enjoy half of the things that i used to.
Its all because i messed up and went off the deep end during my depression, that i suffered from previously. It was a sad time, i over ate, among many other things i am even less proud of.
My doctor says that if it wasnt noticed earlier on, and i wasnt given medication for it, then i would be diabetic by now.

So long as you can maintain a healthy weight and watch the number of carbohydrates (sugars, strarches, are not so good, but fiber and protein are) you injest, you should be ok. But starting early enough will greatly reduce the risks.

And helps people to either prepare or reduce the risks, and prevent serious damage. I hope things have gotten better for you

And actually my sister had the same thing happen to her. But she can't pin it on anything as noble as depression, she just thought she could eat whatever she wanted with no consequences. But her body translates corn, potatoes and rice into sugars, which is why insulin wouldnt work on her if they gave it to her.

cool m my dad is diabetic; and both him, and i believe i might be diabetic also. i have not been checked yet, because i can not stand needles. if i do have diabetis, i am taking the pills, not the needle. It would depend on the type of Diabeties and if your body still has the ability to produce insulin, or if your body is rejecting it. Diabeties can be hereditary. In my case, I have it on both sides of my family, so I was kind of screwed since both my parents are Diabetic. If you think you may be diabetic, it is wise to get youreslf checked out. You don't just have to do the bloodwork (although it is the best way), there is available Urin test strips which can be perscribed by a Doctor. If I hadn't of gone when I did, I could have lost my sight, and caused some serious damage to my liver. Luckily, it was caught early enough and now that I have my sugar levels reasonably under control, the damage I did cause is repairing.

i never knew that they can diagnose it through urin! that way if i do have it, i can take the pills instead of the neadle, which is how my dad does it. i just do not like to be in pain, or to see others in pain.

They can, but it is more to ensure there is no liver damage. But as for the needles, that would depend on your age, and how much insulin your body is able to produce. Type 1 Diabetics are usually younger (usually 25 or less), don't produce any insulin and require the injections. Type 2 Diabetics are older (usually 25 +) still produce insulin, but either it isn't enough to counter act the sugar levels in the bloodstream, or your body tissue is rejecting the insulin. Pills are used, but sometimes as disease progresses, the medications are not as effective in encouraging insulin production type 2 diabetics may also require injections.

I found out that I have diabetes in December of 2006. I take the pill thank God and only have to check my sugar once a day again thank God. It has been pretty good and I had to change the way I eat. I cut out all junk food, well I do eat it once in a great while but for the most part I try not to eat it. Now I have to try and lose weight....hugs, angelsrluvd

i was told by my dad, that the urine test will not work unless the diabeties, which i do not know that i have, has spread into my kidneys. my dad says that he thinks i should go for the blood work to test, but i have a fear of needles. they hurt me more than they hurt most people.
