First off, I remember seeing a bass virtuoso (Bill Clements is his name) who only had one hand. His left one. He could actually play his bass with one hand and I'll show you how to do that.

First, take some kind of arm-band or bandana. Wrap it around the neck where the 1st (F, A#, D#, G#) fret is, but do it to where it's loose enough so when you play a string open it won't play an 'F' or 'D#'.

Now, if it helps, just put your right hand or arm behind your waist or inbetween you and your bass.

(If you have a compression pedal or some effects processor that allows you to add compression, I would reccomend using it now.)

Turn up your volume and get your tone to where you like it.

Now, what you have to do is press down on the fret hard enough to where it makes a note (which can be tricky on the lower registers) and start with simple things. Major scales and junk like that. Then start doin' some walking lines and work from there.

It's a neat little gimmick to do and if you're good enough at it, you won't even need the bandana anymore.

Plus, this is a great finger-strength building exercise.

Thumping is cool to know, and if your good enough, you can thump with both hands, so that you can eventually play your own melodies over your bass lines. I have a little latin thing I like to play with thumping. And really the only thing that the bandana is for is to mute the strings so they dont ring out and make a muddy sound. Even if you watch most of the pros, they still use a bandana or a wristband to keep the strings from ringing. Just look at a lot of the Wooten family playing the thumping battles. Its fun to watch, and they do this technique a lot.

Yeah prity much you don't need the bandana you can do this with out it, and with almost any electric insturment. You can kinda do it with acustics but not as audibly. Its a fun little thing, and I do it a lot. (Cuz Alexi from COB does and I think that hammer ons kick serious a**!)
