Asuma:"Hey, let's take it easy, we've got a lot of time, Its the first move in invading enemy territory, sometimes you have to be able to make moves like this."
"I thought you didn't make moves like this. Just like me..."
"To protect the King when dealing with stronger opponents, its like they say...you have to make sacrafices."
"Did something happen?"
"Nah, its nothing. Its just after all this time, I've finally begun to understand the importance of the King."
"Well if the King is taken its the end of the game..."

Who is the King? And how does he/she apply to Shikamaru's life? A question people have been asking since the question was first proposed, and still will be asking until the writer finds the appropriate time to add a flashback to exactly what Asuma tells Shikamaru. But untill then, all we can do is speculate, and speculate we shall. Come on, tell me who you think the King is! Be sure to provide evidence so I can list it under theorys.
Theory #1: Naruto is the king.
Actually, nobody has given me a really good reason why yet, other then, well, he's the main character and the demon fox.
Theory #2: Temari is the King
Well, no, thats not quite what I mean. I think he said that the king is the one you love, who is most precious to you, who, depending on which pairing you support, could be Ino or another girl. But there is this theory in general because...
+The entire Naruto series is filled with "protecting the one most precious to you" is it not?
+Asuma only figured this out recently. His relation ship with Kurunai is only shown recently. So maybe she is his precious person?
Theory #3: The Konoha is the King
+because the Hokage's main job is to protect the Konoha, you could actually see the Hokage as the queen.
+All the shinobi work to protect and fund the Konoha.
+The Konoha is eternal as long is it is protected.

I didn't even see the hidden meaning in those words...!
But, seeing as how the story is going, it'll be something cheesey like Naruto being the king... >___>

Hmm....yeah, I was wondering about that. At first, I thought that Asuma was talking about his father, the Fifth. However, that page seemed to crush that theory, due to the look on Shikamaru's face. A rather surprised look, as though it was not the answer he was really expecting.
I'm thinking maybe Naruto, as the future Hokage. crying But then again, it's hard to tell.

I'm leaning towards "the precious person", since without them life is without meaning/purpose, as in a chess game if the King is lost the game is over.
Or
Konoha, since, as previously mentioned, all the other pieces' actions are for the advancement and protection of the King (Konoha) and if Konoha is gone, the game for all the pieces (villagers) is also over. 3nodding
