INTRODUCTION

Well, I'm not going to bore you with a section of "why I want an Iridae". I'll sum it up in one simple sentence, "I want to RP". There you have it!

Now, as far as my concept is concerned, anything and everything in this quest is subject to change. If I am too close to another character, let me know and I'll change. If something isn't quite right, I'll change it! I'm flexable!

I chose Compassion as my topic because it's something with which I like to think that I am familiar. I love to help people, and compassion is one of the things that rules my life, and like every writing teacher I've ever had has told me, "Write what you know". I'm not trying to toot my own horn or say that I'm some sort of wonderful good Sameritan type, no no. But Compassion is an important force in this world and something that we need more of, and therefore I think that the Guardian of Compassion would be an excellent Irdae.

Rules
1. Obey Gaia TOS (naturally)
2. I'm open for critique, but please be constructive, I don't think this will be a problem, but please don't flame or be rude.
3. If you think that I'm too close to stepping on anyone's toes, let me know and let me know what I need to change, I'm new to the Bleeding hearts community so I'm not yet completly familiar with every neuance of every player and character.
4. If you don't have any critique for my quest, just let me know you were here and leave a little bit of love. I like love heart
5. If you want to donate, please do! (But you dont have to, obviously.)

What is Compassion?

Definition

According to Dictionary.com (one of my favorite resources), Compassion is:
Quote:
a feeling of deep sympathy and sorrow for another who is stricken by misfortune, accompanied by a strong desire to alleviate the suffering.

According to Word Net:

Quote:
1. a deep awareness of and sympathy for another's suffering
2. the humane quality of understanding the suffering of others and wanting to do something about it

And according to Wikipedia (another excellent resource):
Quote:
Compassion is a sense of shared suffering, most often combined with a desire to alleviate or reduce such suffering; to show special kindness to those who suffer. Thus compassion is essentially empathy, though with a more active slant in that the compassionate person will seek to actually aid those they feel compassionate for

I will be focusing on the more active side of compassion. While empathy is an important part of compassion, I see it as a door way which leads to compassion, and that the true nature of compassion lies with in Compassionate acts.

And finally, a word from the Dalai Llama
"Compassion makes one see the picture clearly; when emotions overtake us, the lack of seeing clearly clouds our perception of reality and hence the cause of many misunderstandings leading to quarrels (even wars)."

Guardian Description
(Idea sketch by me!)

Name: Gabriel
User Image

Gender: Male

General Likes: Meditation, candles, helping people, bland food

General Dislikes: Loud noises, The News, People being hurt, not being able to help.

Hobbies: Drawing, books (especially comic books), community service

Personality Overview:
Infant-Quiet, happy, sleeps through the night. Wide eyed, watching everything that passes by him.
Toddler- Learns to share easily, plays well with other. Rarely throws tantrums and when he does it's because of his lack of communication ability, not because he wants something that he can't have. Starts to show alturistic values. Begins to "read" comic books.
Kid- Learns to read quickly, enjoys comic books a great deal. Continues to be easy to get along with. Begins doing community service with others. Begins to develop a savior complex, wants to help everyone, begins to develop feelings of failure when he dosent succeed.
Teen- (this is too far in advance to know for sure, it would be dependent on RP. Some sort of trauma to him could change him completly, think spider man, would he still have been the same super hero if his uncle Ben hadn't died?)
Continuing with previous trends. Finds himself alienated from his peers because he is impatient with those that would cause harm to others. Wants to save the world and all of its inhabitants. Becomes narrowminded in his quest to end suffering.

Appearence:
Crystal- Opaque Light blue, like a light lapis luzi with gold in the veins of the crystal. Dome shapped and set into a gold pendant that matches the gold flakes. Something like this
Infant- Light blue eyes, plae skin, blonde hair, chubby little body (very cherub-esque) Fuzzy wings, more like a baby chick than an angel. He has a gold vein-like marking that starts from under his chin on the left and comes up his right cheeck up to under his eye and one that arks across his left shoulder and wraps up to his neck. These markings stay with him for all of his life, they resemble the gold veining in the light blue crystal. (see idea sketch)
Toddler- Looses some of the chub, wings grow and become more feather than fuzz. Usually wears light colors and blue jeans, namely (ugly)hand woven sweaters that Tulip picks out for him. His hair gets longer and often falls in his face. His vein markings grow with his body, as his face gets bigger, so do his markings, they dont change much with age.
Kid- Looses all of his baby chub, becomes quite skinny. Wears glasses and t-shirts with super hero logos on the front. Can always be seen carrying a bag full of books, comic books and sketchbooks. Wings are awkwardly large, cause him some trouble with balance. Under his thick glasses and unkempt hair he's a very cute kid.
Teen- Grows into himself more, begins to develop muscles, although he's still very slender. Trades his super hero logos in for plain colors, still preferrs pale colors (light blue like his eyes) to dark. Keeps his glasses but chooses more "up to date" frames, prefers plastic frames to metal ones because the metal ones clash with his markings . Begins to style his blonde hair, which now is about chin length. He doesn't have a comic book super hero jaw or cheek bones, just a nice looking face. He's not movie star attractive but he's not ugly.

His Mistake:
(Yup, still working on this, I'm trying to decide if his mistake was on a large or small scale, if he destroyed a village or led to the death of one person... or maybe a combination of the two)

Powers:
Main- Inspire Compassion, through touching someone he can inspire them to perform compassionate acts towards others.
Minor- Empathy: allows him to feel what others are feeling. (Not telepathy, he dosent know what anyone else is thinking, only what they are feeling. This power could be a weakness as well as a strength).

His Flaws:
Gabriel is terribly naïve. He believes that everyone is inherently good and will keep their promises. He gives everyone the benefit of the doubt and at times refuses to believe that something like true hate or true evil could exist. Because of his naivety, he is ill prepared for when bad things happen, to him or to anyone else. He doesn’t plan ahead or make fall back plans so in most crises he has to just make due with what he has at that moment. (It’s not that he’s stupid or that he doesn’t know that bad things happen, he just believes that everything will come out okay in the end, no matter what the circumstances, so he sees no reason to dwell on the negative things in life)
In keeping with his savior complex, Gabriel wants to help everyone. This causes him a great deal of stress as well as gives him an unrealistic burden. Tulip and others have tried to explain to him that you can’t help everybody all the time but he refuses to believe it. He takes any inability to rescue some one or help a situation as a failure on his part and feels tremendous guilt. He sees himself as the last line of defense against some great and terrible suffering that will envelope the whole world, and the only person who can hold it back because he is the only being on the face of the planet who has enough compassion and empathy to stop it. (Tulip blames the comic books for this)

Spirit Keeper
(Sketch by me!)

Name: Tulip
User Image

Age: You don't need to know that! (Looks to be in her early-mid 20's)

Race: Half human, half forest spirit thingy.

Occupation: Runs a coffee shop, makes a damn good cup of cappucino.

Background: Her mother was a raging hussie and she never knew her father, aparently her mother didn't know him all that well herself. Her father was just some being that her mother met at a bonfire one night, a few months later, Tulip was born. She grew up in a fairly average middle class neighborhood, and was raised to be independent and self sufficient. In her teen years she took up buddhist thought and meditation. Currently she spends most of her time spazzing out over one thing or another about her work.

Appearence: She would look like a fairly normal bohemian woman if it weren't for the antlers and hooves. She wears a lot of long flowing skirts, funky tops and scarves. Sometimes she'll wrap her antlers in brightly colored scarves but usually she preferrs to pretend they dont exist. She has naturally dark red hair and light blue eyes (that she usually hides behind green contacts).

Personality: Tulip wants so desperatly to be a bohemian, to be calm and zen and free spirited. However, she has more important things to think about rather than spend hours meditating on the color red. She works hard but it usually pays off for her, so she has a strong sense of reciprocity, if you try hard enough, you will be rewarded. She tries to practice the Buddhist ideal of compassion and do all she can to be good to everyone around her and to help the less fortunate, unfortunatly, she often times forgets.

Hobbies: Tulip is an avid reader and when she's not perfecting her cappucino skills she's reading. Almost every wall in her apartment is lined with book shelves stuffed with books. The only available wall that dosent have a bookshelf on it is dedicated to her alter. It's a simple alter that mostly just gives her somethign to face while meditating, which she dosent do nearly as often as she'd like. Twice a week she ventures to the Buddhist center to join a group meditation. She also enjoys cooking, crocheting and watching made for TV movies.

Motivation and an Indepth Look at Gabriel

An interview with compassion!
(My own little mock-rp with a teenaged Gabriel and a reporter)
(Whoa, good job Tulip, way to make up a creative title)

Setting: A comfortable room, not well decorated. Two brown chairs, an end table with two glasses and a pitcher of water, over head flourescent lighting, a brown shag rug. This could be a room pretty much anywhere.

"Hello" the reporter said, flicking a strand of brown hair from her face and smiling her polite smile. She stated her name and invited Gabriel to sit. He did so, leaning awkwardly to one side to accommodate his wings, this chair had not been made for angels. The reporter produced a tape recorder from her bag and sat it on the end table beside the glasses and the water. She hit the record button and smiled at Gabriel. "Shall we begin?"

(To be continued...soon...)_

Okay - I adore the fact that Gabe (CAN I CALL HIM GABE?!) has a savior complex. That's new and not something that we have here. However, I would like to see more detail on his personality. Personality is a big thing and really should be more than one or two lines. What drives him? What motivates him to act like he does. Put me inside his head, make me feel like I'm him.

Why does he have a savior complex? What helps him/makes him learn to read quickly? Is he just naturally a quick learner? Did he teach himself or did he have lots of help? How much help is lots? Why is he easy to get along with? Was he taught that way, or is it natural for him?

What does he like about comic books? What's his favorite comic book? Why does he dislike loud noises?

For his powers - Foresight seems to be a bit...uh...detrimental to his development. If his mistake to make him fall was not seeing negative consequences, he wouldn't have a power to make it easier for him now. They'd want him to learn how to think about it beforehand without aid of magical means. Does that make sense?

Please go into more detail on the crystal. Light blue with gold flecks doesn't leave me much to work with. Make sure it has to do with what you see compassion as.

For appearances, give him something more than looking like a little baby with wings. These are special biggrin Make him unique.

When you finally get to the mistake, be sure to go into detail. One line works all right, but there's so much leading UP to the mistake that it's kind of frowny when there's so little written on it.

I hope I've helped! Good job so far, hon.

EDIT: OH YEAH GIVE HIM FLAWS *Bricked* I likeflaws.

Just a little thing - Gabrielle is a female name, just so you know. XD; The closest male equivalent would be Gabriel.

Thanks Guys!! You're great help! I'll get started right away. After all, he's just in the beginning stages of creation now. Thanks again, I love critique!

That said~ I do believe with what Kyr said, mostly. :3 The hero complex is very interesting - Alden is rolling his eyes from here. XD But his personality needs more work. His apparence is very well detailled, but what is more important is his personality. After all, it is possible that you might not get a custom (win him in a flatsale, a raffle, etc) and then what will trully make Gabe will be his personality.

His personality should relate to his likes and dislikes, and the more detail the better ! What are his deepest fears, his most hidden secrets ? Everyone has them. Of course most of this might be influenced by rp and not be set in stone, but the more details you know, the easier it will be for Gabe to come to life once you start writing for him. Is he afraid to fail again and would do anything and everything to make sure it doesn't happen ? How would he react if he tried to cheer up someone, but it didn't work ? How would he feel, how would he take it ? How will he react to people who hurt others ? You say he is impatient, but what if the whole thing continue ? Would he seethe to himself or would he potentially become violent torward the person, in order to try to save his victim ? How would he feel torward himself afterward, after blowing up ? There has to be more to him than liking comic books and helping ladies cross the road. XD

Some interesting things I found while googleing around...

http://www.wisdomquotes.com/cat_compassion.html - A nice little page of quotes. Remember, an idea can spark from anywhere ! smile

http://library.thinkquest.org/27066/psychology/nlcolorpsych.html - A very interesting bit I found here...

Psychological Effect: We usually associate the color blue with the night and thus we feel relaxed and calmed. Lighter blues make us feel quite and away from the rush of the day. These colors can be useful in eliminating insomnia. Like yellow, blue inspires mental control, clarity and creativity. However, too much dark blue can be depressing.

Psychological Effect: Purples have been used in the care of mental of nervous disorders because they have shown to help balance the mind and transform obsessions and fears. Indigo is often associated with the right side of the brain; stimulating intuition and imagination. Violet is associated with bringing peace and combating shock and fear. Violet has a cleansing effect with emotional disturbances. Also, this color is related to sensitivity to beauty, high ideals and stimulates creativity, spirituality and compassion. Psychic power and protection has also been associated with violet.

Maybe play with both blue and purples, maybe ? Both seem to fit him very well, and it would be interesting to have some purple on him, as it is the color most commonly attached to compassion. Sticking to light blues instead of dark blues might be better.

Just my two cents, you don't need to listen to my ranting. XD
