Reading through what people put in their requests to join again, an idea came to mind. Art workshops. Currently their are no real community events in this guild. Contests don't seem right for this group, and neither do auctions or raffles for art, though a thread for organizing art swaps might work.

What people keep saying is that they want to get better. To be blunt, critiques are wonderful, but they can be vague and general. Workshops would gives members the opportunity to expand their skills in particular directions, with the help of others.

My Idea
A subforum. Having multiple workshop threads going in the main forum would just clutter it up more. It would also keep the workshop threads in one place so it is easier to look through them.

Each thread would have people who help run it. These individuals would need to be people who can help others. As an example, I would be fine doing a Celtic knotwork Workshop, but not a faces one. That is because I am good at making the knots, but have trouble with faces.

In these threads, posting images would be limited. Fifteen posts per page, with people posting their progress, would be a lot of images per page. I for one try to be considerate. Not everyone has faster than dial-up connections.

There would be stickies in the subforum to find out what people want to have workshops for and to find people to run them.

This is just an idea. I would like your input and reactions. Good, bad, boring? I want to know. No point in setting it all up for it to be ignored.

I for one would be up for doing workshops, and leading them as well...

I think it's a good idea! We have the funds for a few sub-forums actually. What do you think about one for art galleries in particular, for people just to show off art.

It would mean we would have in effect 3 forums, one for critique/workshops, one for art galleries, and the main one for discussion of techniques, styles, and general stuff.

I was going to starting a speed painting thread, that and a weekly paint topic, where I could add a word or a phrase, and everyone does a quick drawing about that particular thing.

Sounds like a good way to reorganize the guild.

Main: discussion of techniques, styles, and general stuff
Sub1: critique/workshops
Sub2: art galleries

I like that. Easier to keep clean and organized. Easier to find what you want. Nice.

So, it seems to me that a few things will need to be done.

1) Make the sub forums.
2) Make the rules and comment stickies for each subforum.
3) Get a list of Workshops people would like.
4) Make a list of workshops people would like to run, and who they are.
5) Move all the galleries into the Gallery subforum.

As always, if anybody has something to say, I want to hear it.

Hmm... you could either set up a thread, or put a few options in a poll, so that members can have some say on what that topic would be smile

Could even have the occasional mix'n'match game, with two or more options... like... a
|male/female/| |young/old| |happy/angry| |line sketch/paint sketch|

for figures, so people could whip out a happy/old/male line sketch.
Might help people develop variety... or ~

|large/small| |modern/... not modern| |town/country|

for buildings... could include perspective, movement, all sorts in the choices...
