What would you do if you were suddenly made leader (Prime Minister/President) of your country? What would be the priorities of your leadership? Would you put fixing the environment first on your agenda?

Change the national curriculum first, so that we have educated people to sort out environmental problems.

Wet Lettuce Badgerkin Would you put fixing the environment first on your agenda? Nope. My country has this issue right now... a lot of people out of country, fighting someone else's war in Iraq... people dieing... global warming can wait. I don't think it will wait and scientists don't think it will either. It's happening now and it will soon be too late to stop. The 'point of no return' is here or fast approaching! Put it this way: let's say the Government builds lots of renewable energy projects and limits people's personal energy consumption. Result 1: fossil fuel burning power stations can be closed down. Result 2: Carbon Dioxide emissions decrease sharply. Result 3: The demand for oil (the real reason for going to war) is no longer there so there is no further need to invade the Middle East to secure oil supplies. The Government can say stuff your oil and bring the troops home. ^_^

Include more environmental science/conservation issues or improve education standards generally... Both, but completely re-do the English syllabus, languages, maths and science. But just in general really.

As much as I'd like to say, "Yes eviroment would always come first," I would be lying if I did. My first priority would be cleaning up the mess created in Iraq by ourdear President Bu sh ll it. I wouldnt let it consume my stay in the office, I'd put the rest of my attention to bettering the public school system (which would lead to better educated people who can understand global warming in the long run.) socailizing health care, dealing with global warming and the enviroment in my country, educating people about the problems we're facing as a nation as far as the enviroment and our "luxury" attitudes towards resources, then stabilize the economy and take the power out of the hands of the obscenely wealthy. Yes, I do realize the problems that it would present and how fairly unrealistic it is to expect all of it to happen in a term or two, but this a hypothetical situation anyway.

I can't believe I'm the only one who picked the first one I would't want people to respect my power, I'd rather have the people love me for who I am. Think about it like this lettuce, if everyne loved President Bush (everyone in America) then everyone would probably be more supportive about the war
Its to say that if you respect something, such as a parent, rather than loving a parent, then your probably not going to have good times. However, the last sentence can be twisted as in, "Oh well, I love my father and I respect him for his <Insert talent/work/abilities/chariteristics here>" but thats not what I ment. I ment that you have to be on more of one side than the other.

If someone respects you then they will give you advice and tell you if you're doing something wrong, where as if they just loved then.. well, that's it. They love you, nothing more. But if they respect you then you have done something to gain it and you can also gain love. And also, your analagy sucks. I seriously do not consider Mr. Blair like my father. So you want people to be supportive of something that is morally wrong and has killed thousands of your own soldiers as well as Iraqi civilians? Hah, that's even more stupid.

A country does not need a leader that it loves. It needs a strong leader who is respected. Sorry to say this but countries aren't run on love. I would be a leader that wouldn't back down. Take Winston Churchill. First he was strong and gained respect. Love came later.
A leader that is loved by all would be a leader that is only there for charisma. There needs to be a balance and a strong leader will always meet confrontation even if they are doing the right thing. This is how it works. Unfortunately we have no great examples of leaders right now. Nelson Mandela, I suppose, but he isn't in power any more. We have Bush, an idiot who follows "daddy's" orders. Blair; a puppet doing the best for his position and not the countries. Chirac...well he's just an arse.
A country needs strength to be run, and if I was in that position I would pull out of Iraq, grant as much as possible towards renewable energy sources and tell Bush to f*ck the hell off. Woohoo! Britain under John! Sounds good eh?

Is this a new great British era then? Johnism!
However, what you say is very true. You can't run a country on love.

Emmanuela Is this a new great British era then? Johnism! However, what you say is very true. You can't run a country on love. I agree. If people love you it may well mean you don't have their respect. If you said 'I'm going to abolish taxes and double everyone's salarys so the people can be richer' they might love you for it, in the short term... but you wouldn't have any money to budget towards any improvements. My Government would have Environmentalism and Animal Rights at the heart of it's philosophy. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions drastically, building renewable energy, population reduction, no more house building or road building, improved public transport - rebuilding the rail network & trams in all cities, replacing vivisection with humane research and ending factory farming, hunting, shooting & fishing would be some of my main issues. Also, bring back imperial measurements and money!! ie. shillings, crowns, pounds and ounces, miles, feet and yards. Metric measurements like metres, kilometres, grams etc. for the bin! razz Leagalise receational drugs to kill off the black market but improve detox facilities for addicts.
