I sometimes invest in items in the market place which I expect will inflate nicely so that, provided I can bear to part with them, I can sell them later for a juicy profit.
I thought if anyone was interested I'd post some of my investment tips here. If this is the wrong place, Bookwyrme, please move it to wherever you want it to be.
Since inflation has gone stark raving bananas in the past four months I've had to change how I invest somewhat. 6 months ago 20k was a good start toward something nice to invest in. Lately you're lost if you don't have at least 50k. The best items to invest in are 75 to 100k already.
If you have some gold laying around and want it to work for you while you earn more gold towards your goal, I would suggest investing in the following:
86k Ancient Katant (the prices are going up daily. It's insane I got one yesterday for 75k) 102.5k Coco Kitty (almost going up as fast as the katana, it has quite a lead on the katana and seems to be leveling off...I hope)
Those two are the current ones I'm keeping an eye on. My only rule of thumb is to never invest in something you don't like for yourself.

The Chyaku Norisu Scarf is also inflating at an insane rate too. It's currently at 69k in the marketplace.
Please note that we are not guarenteeing that these items will inflate at insane rates, we're just pointing out trends we've noticed for anyone who is interested.

The KiKi would be excellent, if you have the gold to get it. As the first plushie, it's been skyrocketing. Most of the 2004 items are good. The only ones that are somewhat unpopular are the moneky/bear pajamas (May), the Zony disc player and MP3 player (February), the hammi/bammi hats (April), although those went up in price a little while ago I don't know where they're at now, both the gauntlets (from the November and December letters), and that's pretty much it. The rest of them are excellent investments. The good cheaper 2004 items are probably the staff and pitchfork (October), and the bani/goti clips (September). Possibly the OMFG, though I suspect that its recent price increase is due to the fact that people can't look up the OMG 'cause it's three letters long. Sme of the 2005 items are probably good. Like I said, the KiKi. The CoCo is good, too, as you mentioned. Hmm. I'm not as good with the 2005 items as I am with the 2004.
I can tell you some items that probably won't inflate much. The two whips, seeing as they're only about doubled in price in the last year or so (from 15k in December 2005 to around 35k in December 2006). The pandi packs are never going to sell too well (those were a bad investment on my part n.n"). The yetis, most likely, as well as the winter fox mink. Probably the solar cloak will never do too well. Most of the 2006 items probably won't sell well, aside from the ones that are selling well now. And those are pretty much the only donation items I know.
On to the event items. n.n
If you can currently afford it (which good investors should be able to do), get at least one or two jolly hats. Now. They jump up in price right before Christmas, and fall rapidly shortly after. The last I looked, which was last week, they were at about 29k. A month ago, they were up to about 60k. They were less than half that before Christmas 2004, and not too much higher in 2005. Now, though, people seem to like them a lot more. The jolly slippers aren't so sought-after. The spirited set from 2004 is also a relatively good investment. If you can get the better-liked items, such as the boxers, gloves, or scarf, you'll have a good item at the end of the year. For Halloween items, try for the 2003 items. The 2004 items aren't worth all that much, considering, and the 2005 items are rather disliked. The 2006 items haven't been around for long enough for me to value them as an investment, either way, for Christmas or Halloween. They may or may not go up in price, but it depends how much newer users like them and how many are currently flaoting around--which is probably a really high amount, compared to the 2003 and 2004 items.
<.< I did say I was an exchange whore, didn't I? I like to know the values of things. n.n These are all based on my observations in the last... two years or so? Yeah, about two years. I've been watching prices since September 2004, when I decided to quest for something. I'm still questing for it, and that's why I never stopped.

The Lunar set seems to have stagnated.
I have a question about the event items. Which year is the G-corp year?

G-corp? Like the G glasses and the G buckle? That's from the new year's party, I think--the first one and the only one that had items, I don't care how many people whined about how new year's always had items. That's BS.
The G-corp labcoat, however, is from Halloween 2k4, as is the zombie t-shirt (or whatever it's called). I'm pretty sure G-corp was first introduced at Halloween 2k4. I don't remember it before then, but that was the first Halloween event I was part of.
Oh, right, speaking of 2004. The Olmpic shirts, both the black and the white ones, are probably at least a decent investment. There are a ton of them, but they're also the only Olympic items until the summer of 2008. If you wanna do really long term, wait until that time rolls around--the price'll probably inflate like crazy.

Yes, well, they took a lot of time to get. You know how the probing/tipping/zapping was, like, do it to twenty people and you get an item? For 2004, it was, like, 100 people or something for one item. I didn't do it, so I don't remember the exact number, but it was pretty high. So there aren't that many, which is why they're relatively expensive.

Not to mention the fact that they are freaking awesome.
I just love the zombie t-shirt. Heck, I love the zombie skin! I wish I had been around to get it...

<.< I'm not so interested in either. I wasn't then, and I'm not now. The zombie skins from 2004 aren't even around anymore, because they all got reset at some point. The ones you see now are the grombies from 2005. That was probably, hands down, my least favorite event ever. People were so mean, it was awful. 2006 had nothing on 2005, except for the amount of people.

meh... I didn't mind the 06 event, although I kinda thought the items might have been a bit more useful...
I missed the 05 event, but from what I hear, it was kinda worth it for the skin, as people were all mad about their skin getting reset and all.

People still have the grombie skin. Not many, mind you, but I've still seen it recently. The 2006 event, as well as the 2005 event, was bad mostly because of the way people were acting. I couldn't care less about the items. The 2004 event seemed more in the spirit of fun. But then, it wasn't based on numbers like the 2005 one was. Just humans versus zombies.
Come to think of it, I think I wanna check the memorable threads forum sometime, just to refresh my memory on how people acted at Halloween 2k4. I think it's in there, somewhere.

Thanks for the tips! I should probably start doing this as well. I've tried it a couple times, but I didn't make enough off of it to be worth the trouble.

Mmkay, confession time.
Truthfully, item investing doesn't help all that much, unless you get a ton of gold from doing other things. Posting, polling, getting a shop, whatever. I add up the items in my inventory every few months or so, then compare that gold amount to the time that I want. In the last maybe year or so, the difference has changed by maybe a couple hundred thousand, in the opposite direction that I want it to go. With fluctuations, that's not really all that much. So, really, making some sort of shop for a skill you have would probably be a better way to go than investing in items. Plus, it takes a good long time for the items to inflate enough to make much of a difference, and in that time any item you may have wanted to get with that gold will also have increased in price, usually proportionally. So unless you've gotten a good amount of gold in that time, it's so not worth it.
<.< Yeah, that's just what I've observed. Yes, you can make a lot of gold from exchange whoring... if you want to wait a long time for the item to inflate, and if you aren't trying to get any specific item. I can promise you, unless you can get a ton of gold from other things, the item you're questiong for will inflate just as rapidly as the item you bought, and remain just as far out of reach.
Now, if you want to try upgrading, that may work better. I've never tried it, but my friend did it about a year and a half ago to get minis.

Oh, I have one thing to suggest that may either skyrocket in price soon, or never rise ever again: ink. My prediction is that when tattoos come out, ink will be useful for something again and the price will increase dramatically. Or it could be that there're just too many around now, thanks to the Daily Chance, and the price will stay where it is now--that is, at like 5 gold per ink bottle-thing.
