Humanity.
A truely amasing Species.
Every day, people get up, go to work, to go School, "learn" things, partake in simple social activities....
Living each confined within boxed-out lives and marching, quietly, to their own eventual brushes with destiny.

That is.... in their waking hours.

When they rest themselves each night, unbeknownst to any of the conscious World, they shift into a nether-region that bridges This Universe with all the Parallel Dimensions imaginable - the Dreamscape, as it is so called.
Humanity, though it has no awareness whatsoever of the fact, is the only species of all the intelligent races of The Universe that can police this Astrophysical Plane, their spirits being so much stronger than the rest.
Normal people, who live such mediocre lives in their waking hours, are no less than heroes in this realm, possessing incredible powers (normally based around their personalities).

Lately, an outbreak of deaths has gripped the World - hundreds more than usual die in their sleep, with no plausable explanation as to what is going on for the conscious World to see.

The Dark Lord Aerzis of a nightmare reality has declared War on our Universe, and legions upon legions of formless spirits have poured into the Dreamscape, feeding on our waking fears to become whatever monstrous creatures we can imagine.
Unfortunately, whilst all of humanity enters this realm, comparatively few are gifted with the mighty powers that were once our birthright - usually the more repressed or outcasted of the real World.

Everything is on our Species' shoulders now, as we do battle in their dreams, in the hope that someone amoungst them might someday have the power to go into Aerzis' Dark Kingdom and defeat him on his own ground.

It was night.
Once again, the funny looks and ill-concieted comments had haunted his School day.
Alfred Hunt, bright young kid with a keen eye for Maths and a keen hand at Pencil Drawing, was depressed yet again.
It wasn't much really, just a combination of his unusual obsessions with technology ("geeky stuff") and alittle puppy fat, but kids are how kids are.
Sighing, he kicked off his shoes and descided to skip his homework again - pointless.
It wasn't due in for the next day, so why bother with it?
He slouched back into his bed.
As he drifted off into sleep, his last though was a wish that he could be something more important in his World.

Ironic that such a tall order would be granted so quickly.

Through the tunnel of a thousand colours and a vortex of dust and vapour, his Consciousness swept out into an entirely different place.
Landing cat-like on one knee, Anaris slowly looked up at the mountain range around him.
Clouds stretched out at his altitude, The Sun edging them into a glorious white, spanning the horizon until a distance where even the gargantuan tips of snow-flecked mountains could not be seen.

There was something that needed doing near here.

Something was coming.

As always, the Humans would be waiting.

The slight mistyness that came when one awakes a bit too quickly faded. I was left standing- hang on... I'm flying. Ok, so I was left flying somewhere in the upper troposphere of... erm... somewhere. Well, could be worse I suppose.

So I'm standing up in the air gazing down on a floating island. I could see the inhabitants, overly tall and scaled people, walking around in everyday clothes. How surreal. My wings flapped a bit slower and I started to fall slightly, coming in to land on a sun stricken slice of snow. I looked straight ahead, oposite me was a tall, rather handsome looking guy with long white blonde hair. Ooh, my...

A brief gust of wind flowed serenely past, followed by the little thump of something human-sized landing just behind Anaris.
His gaze did not drift from the beautiful scenery for a few moments, before he calmly pivoted around to his left, casually looking over the new-comer.
Wings from the shoulders, a flowing head of long, red hair....
Hmmm.... cute, he thought to himself.

Even in this lovely twilight, a darkness hangs over this place...

His voice was soft, elegant... alittle quiet too, with a touch of sadness at the words being spoken.

May I ask your name?

Of course, my name is Thea. What is yours?

He seemed to be rather upset... Did I disturb him? My sudden arrival might have unnerved him, for surely people generally don't appear from the sky frequently Maybe they do here, but where is here?

Where am I?

That got him.

Where are you?
This is the otherrealm.... the place between our Universe and all the others you could imagine...

He quoted the lecture he'd gotten from his teachers as a child.

Surely you remember?

He'd heard legends of humans who'd wandered free as very young children, before their parents could teach them not to, but they usually ended up.... well...

Other realm? Hah, you think I learn anything in school? My teachers teach me nothing!

Hm, who was this person anyway? This all seems a little suspicious, first I have wings and now apparently I should have had a teacher?

Oh, well at least the veiw was nice. My powerful eyes searched over the huge mountain range, but I had to sheild them from the blaze of the sun for it was so bright! My my my, what a sight indeed. A floating island was bobbing gently passed us, several thousand metres in the valley below.

What should I remember?

What should I remember?
He looked at her with an expression somewhere between helplessness and pity.

We don't have the time - can you fight?

He looked her over again for a weapon... or something that would be overtly usefull in combat...
My my, what a pretty girl...
He caught himself mid-thought, looked once again into her face.
What a stupid question, he reasoned in retrospect of his speach previous.
Would the more innocent me be able to answer that?
But he knew that all humans could fight in here.... the question is whether it would be enough....

Fight you say? Well... I put my hands to my neck, feeling the little pendant in a reflex action. It fell off the chain and materialised as a large iron crossbow. Yeah, I think I can fight. I said as I grinned back at him.

Thirteen spirit shapes appeared out of thin year, their black matter sucking in light and heat. The mysterious guy whipped out two long knives and slit three in two at once. However, the matter regrouped into different shapes. I attempted to deal with the others. My crossbow fired quick rounds, shredding the matter to pieces, and I used my mind to crush the excess; burning them into nothing. As the guy realised what I was doing, we fought in a team, him slashing and ripping the beasts, me sending them back from whence they came!

Howard Edwards was not in a good mood. His usually cold, calm and controlled face was livid with rage. He slammed the door and got out a text book. He flicked open to page 134. He began reading.

Howard's eyes popped open. He stood on the a staircase made of mist. He quickly leapt into the air. Another step appeared as his foot descended. He reached the summit of the stair case. As he reached the top he steadied himself, and dived. He fell, light stirring around him. His closed eyes flicked open and he sent out a hand, slowing himself down, until he flipped the right way up. A shadowy figure appeared and he sent a bolt of lightning from his palm towards it. It disintegrated at the took of light, and Mnemosyne walked off into the distance, as the scene around him rapidly turned into a mountainous ravine.

The hole was about 6 feet across - a black vortex of emptiness from which a small army of chittering black monsters, each about the size of a grown man, poured into the sunset.

As they came flying down, Anaris' blades sang and struck, purging one after the other into oblivion.
Their claws struck out at every angle, hungry for the texture of ripping human flesh beneath them.
Dodging and summersaulting with uneering grace, the grey-eyed warrior would give them no such satisfaction.

The girl fought well, sniping them from a relative distance.
Out on the peaks, they fought as humans do.

From far below, a village of tall sentient creatures watched in hope and awe - if the humans fell, there would be nothing to protect them.
But it was impossible - more and more would come....

Thea!!!
He cut down another winged monstrosity to grant him time enough to speak.

We must take the battle to the air!!!

With that, he jumped up, using the winged gargoil-like bodies of his agressors as steps, but bounding great distances between them.

My large wings beat ferociously and I rose several hundred feet in under a few seconds before getting control and coming back down again. Floating alongside, I could get better shots at the creatures.

A flash of lightening alerted me to the presence of another. Pale and shockingly angry, a tall figure appeared at the battle scene sending blots of lightening to incinerate the black matter creatures.

Mnemosyne flipped over, sending two bolts of lightning towards the creatures. He brought out a dozen needles and threw them towards the creatures, each one incinerating it's target. A few parted from the main group and came to deal with him. He emmited a psychic attack, and they forgot why they were there. With another few movements they were caught in a maelstrom of lightning.

Grinning, I pulled more bolts from the air and sent them flying into the creatures, shredding them into pieces before they were incarcerated by the stranger.

How long would this carry on for? My my, it could get exhausting after a while, or can one not get exhausted in this place? Distracted for a mere second, I was grabbed by slimy, writhing hands, groping my body and smothering my face. Before I could scream, I felt a slight heat emmanating from where they had been a millisecond before.

I nodded my gratitude to the stranger before carrying on my vicious attack.

Clouds are funny things in The Dreamscape - you can reach out and touch them, their texture almost like cotton wool - some bits you can pass right through with just a tickling sensation.... others can hold your full weight...

Anaris, leaping and bouncing off his opponents, descided to take a ride through the white whisp just above him - a neat little tunnel of softer grey cloud wove through the whiteness, which he shot through with practiced speed, leaving his opponents and their spiky wings tangled somewhere behind him.

There it is.

Up ahead, a vortex of grey-on-black, the fabric of space swept in turbulence.
The faint whispers of screams and a thousand insane sounds of torture and madness ebbed from the thing as it spat out more and more of the winged monstrosities.

Thea was covering his tail end, but closing something even of this size was too much for him alone....

More will come, he thought, not noticing the presence of another ally on the scene...
