ok. So I know the deal about the tattoo-ed array on Hawkeye's back. But I am curious because it is not the same array as the one on Roy's gloves. So my question is....why? Does Riza's tattoo have an importance later on? Or is its only purpose to illistrate Roy and Riza's past?

The array on her back is, I believe, the alchemic tree of life, or something like that.
Roy's array is only to make a flame, he used the array on Riza's back to make himself more powerful.
At least, that's what I've gathered. I'm pretty sure it's correct, but I could be wrong... ^^'
It's why later she says:
Please burn my back... so that there is never another Flame Alchemist. <--- That's a vague quote...
I think she's refering to his strength of alchemy, not his actual ability to produce a flame.
In white for spoilers.

interesting. blaugh I thought that the array was for a higher form of flame alchemy. since burning is rapidly combining with O2 and roy needs a spark...but then I always wondered why he didn't use it before. but yes this makes sense. thanks sooooooooo much!!! heart heart heart heart

I have a question also - if you compare Riza's tattoo and the Grand Arcanum they look alike, howso I'll so you. The TattooNotice how at the top the snake/dragons tails form a circle and a few other things. Grand Arcanum (with 7 point array)Now see that where Riza's snakes would be are two points that the ends also meet at the top, and there are other things. Now I found a pretty good fanart of Riza's back and since the angle of the actual picture is weird, being at the side, I took the fanart (credit to the artist) and placed the Grand Arcanum on top of her back. Tattoo and Arcanum combinedNow I know that it's not perfect but if you look at both you can see a few similarities... just coincidence?

But I never knew that it would that big! xD

Rosie the Riviter interesting... so do u guys think that there'll be more of a plot line to the tattoo? Probably, there doesn't seem to be much explanation to it currently.

Roy's alchemy circle and Riza's tatoo have several shapes in common. Besides the salamander on the bottom, there's also the diamond with a triangle with in it. Then, there's also a ring, and a flame symbol near the top sort of where a jewel would go on a real ring. This wikipedia page explains a lot about speculations of the tatoo. FMA manga>>> Riza does ask Roy to burn her back, but so that no one could decipher the code on her back. By deciphering that code, one could easily unlock the secrets to very powerful flame alchemy. Thus, Riza asks Roy to help her destroy the code. The words in Latin on her back (which are really hard to see) are part of a sort of poem called Requim.<<<

Well, since her father was an alchemist, and Roy was an apprentice under Hawkeye's father. Lots of people are speculating that her father put the tattoo on her back, and it sounds believable, but nobody knows until Arakawa tells us :X

He tells Roy as he's dying that Riza has his secrets. Ultimately, it's up to her to give the secret to Roy. She makes him even more powerful ^w^
Which means that he's seen her bare back >w>

It's be a pretty good guess that Hawkeye-sensei put the array on Riza's back to make sure that his knowledge was passed on but never to the wrong hands.
