Maybe you math kids can help me understand it.

Three guys go to New York City on a business trip. They stay at a motel and it costs them thirty dollars. So each guy pays ten, his third of the price. They go up to their room.

A few hours later, the desk clerk decides he charged them too much, so he gives the concierge five dollars to give back to them. The whole time he is in the elevator, the concierge is trying to think of how he could divide five dollars between three guys. Finally, he just puts two dollars in his own back pocket and when he gets upstairs, he gives each guy a dollar.

So each guy ultimately paid nine dollars. The concierge has two dollars. Where is the other dollar?

This one bugs the hell out of me...
30÷3=10
The cost was thirty, divided by three men. Comes to a total of ten a piece
30-25=5
The over price minus the real price is what the three men get back.
5-2=3
The door man takes two dollars to even out the division between the three men.
10-1=9
Each man initially paid ten dollars, but recieved one back, paying nine dollars.
9×3+2=29
Three men paid nine dollars, and the door man got two for him self. 29 dollars total.
30-29=1
We started with thirty dollars, 29 was accounted for, one dollar is missing.

Mathematically, it doesn't work backwards. confused

Really you don't lose a dollar. You just have to think of it as differently. Each man paid the teller person $10, which equals $30. The teller then takes 5 of those dollars out, equaling $25. Two of those $5 go to the bellman. The other three to each guy. So its +30 - 5 for the teller, so 25. Then +2 for the bellman, which is, of course, 2. Then each man got +1, so that's +1 x 3. So its +30 - 5 + 2 +(1 x 3) or 30 dollars. ^_^ It works! I think the trouble is we tried to focus on the money the men had, but its really money for the teller! Actually I'm not really sure what I did different... O_o Anyway, Mystery Solved!
