Chapter one
"Birth of a Roane"
Her mother was married to a fishermen, She waved him goodbye while she stood ashore and saw the boat sail away, her child save hidden inside the warm flesh of her body. Until that fateful night, restless she walked trough her house, couldn’t eat, couldn’t sleep. She was nine months pregnant now, she would give birth soon and her husband still didn’t returned home. For a part out of habit and secretly hoping she would see the boat she went to the shore. Quickly she walked to the beach, the thin layer of clouds covered the sky and broke the moonlight into small beams that hit the water. The wind made the hot night more pleasant and the water formed little waves with foam on top. When she left her shoes on the sand and stepped into the cool water she felt relieved and the sound of the sea calmed her down, like the sea took her worries with him. Then a shock went trough her body, her belly felt strange and she felt the baby moved impatient inside her. Paralyzed she stood there as she realized she was giving birth. When she landed on her knees the water around her spurted around her. The pains of birth took over her body while she thought she should warn the midwife. Hours went by and the pains of birth came as ebb and tide. When the first sunbeams touched the horizon she was born. A beautiful girl in good heath swam from the amniotic fluid into the sea.
She was scared when she lifted up the little white fur ball, when she saw the big shining grey eyes she melted and held her against her breast. When the skin busted open and she yielded of her skin a baby girl came out and searched for the breast of her mother. She laid down the seal skin next to her before she opened her clothing to let her child drink. The sunrise colored the sky orange and made the fur look like a golden coat. As she began to realize her child was a Roane she thought about how the town would react, she was afraid they would be banned from it by the inhabitants. She decided she couldn’t burn the coat, because that would mutilate her child with awful burn wounds but she also couldn’t give it back because she could slip in and swam away. She decided she would hide it, and give it back when she thought she would be old enough to know the truth. When she went home she laid her daughter down in the cradle and went out to bring the fur to her mother who promised she would keep it until she asked to give it back.
Chapter two
“The secret revealed”
In her teenage years she seemed to be an ordinary girl, she went trough the normal up and downs and her grandmother was happy she developed normally. The only moment she worried about her was when she sat at the dike and watched over sea, her eyes staring in the distance and her mind unreadable, she could sit like that for hours.

At her sixteenth birthday grandma called her down early in the morning. Hasel wondered what was so important to wake her up that early on her birthday. When she came down the stair grandma sat on the dinner table with a grey fur coat in front of her. As she sat down she started to tell about her birth and about her parents. She didn’t reacted the way grandma wished for, she said she talked like a lunatic and just was a foolish old woman, people couldn’t change into animals nor the other way round. She said she never was a seal. She was confused and angry and felt so incredible lonely without her mother. She left the room without looking at the fur and went upstairs again. Alone in the room grandma sat at the table and stroke the soft spotted seal fur. She still believed in magical and non logical things but she was afraid that school and the whole different way of living young people seemed to have these days would never have room for such things. And while she put the fur away in a basket in the closet she wondered if her granddaughter ever would try on the skin and accept who she was.
Chapter three
“Wake up”
The dirt she just dropped landed with a soft sound on the coffin while the referent softly spoke about life and death and about being in a better place. The rain had made the grey clay mud slick and it shimmered like a polished stone, tears from the people around her dropped on the grass making a similar sound as the rain. All those sounds together with the soft sound of the stormy sea at the background sounded like a symphony specially made for her grandmother that day.
As only grandchild she inherited everything her grandma had. She gave some of her personal belongings to old friends of her grandma and gave away her clothes to the poor. When she went trough the closet’s she found a basket. It was to dark to see what was in there so she felt, as she touched the skin she froze, images, scents, feeling of another life came to her. Short but save and comforted. When she put the basket back she realized her grandma was right, she did came to this world as a seal baby. The next day she took out the basket again and held it in her lap. While she looked at it she tried to decide if she would touch it or not. When she woke up that morning it was like the incident of the previews night had been a dream and she wanted to make sure that it wasn’t. As she stroked the smooth fur she felt relieved the smell of the sea grew stronger and the sound of the waved filled her ears. The familiar feeling comforted her and took away the fear. When she woke up she laid nude on the floor, the seal skin next to her. She got up and stepped into the bed that once belonged to her grandmother, softly apologizing to her for not believing.
Chapter four
“The return”
She went to her favourite spot on the beach and sat down. Listening to the soft sounds of the calling waves. It was as if the seal fur in her hands burned of desire to cool off in the waves. She took of her clothes, folded them carefully and laid them down on a rock. When her feet touched the cold March water a shiver went over her body. The fur melted into her skin and a warm feeling came over her, when she swam away she already started to forget her grief about her family.
Her body felt numb after she had laid off her skin, a warm breeze stroked her body, the summer night shimmered because a thousand stars in the sky. Slowly she started waking up, remembering things and realizing she was back again. The whole spring and summer she spend in the water, playing with the other seals, and fooling around with the fishermen. When she walked to the rock her clothes were gone, obviously, she didn’t realized yet how long she had been gone. With the fur wrapped around her she walked trough the sleeping town. When she got home she went in and noticed it was exactly the same she left, only with a pile of dust on everything. Suddenly she felt tired, so incredible tired she could fell asleep here in the kitchen. Slowly she stumbled up to her bed, and she fell asleep for a long time.
When she woke up in the morning, she felt happy and she was glad she was home, she never realized you could be homesick to a place you didn’t called home. When she went down she noticed that in the months she was gone mice had eaten of the left over bread and a layer of mould covered the cheese. After she had took on her clothes she went out to the market to buy some fresh bread and cheese, oh she missed bread and cheese. Not that fish and shells were disgusting, but they did become boring after a while. When she walked trough the streets she noticed that some people were staring at here and whispered when she passed them by. When she saw the referents wife she decided to talk to her. The beginning of the chat was normal, about nothing particular, until the referents wife asked Hasel where she had been all that time. Hasel froze and panicked that she didn’t thought of that sooner, of course the town had speculated about where she had gone, in a small town like that even someone without friends couldn’t disappear without got it noticed. She stuttered that she had been at a relative that had lived far away, to grief about her grandma. The referents wife nodded understandable, she said it was logical that she wanted to have some time for herself, she only asked if the next time she could inform the referent about it, she said they worried about it if something worse happened to her. Off course Hasel knew that what she said was just part of her job. But she worried about the gossips that did the round about her in the town.
Chapter 5
“The distraction”
When she sat at the dinner table eating her bread with cheese she nearly didn’t tasted it, she thought about the town and the gossips, she wondered if she ever would be able to find a job. While she was deep in her thoughts the children outsider yelled enthusiastic, they disturbed her thinking and she looked trough the window to see what all the excitement was about. Amazed she raised her eyebrows looking at the circus trailers. She signed and wised her life was as free as the life’s of the artists that walked trough the streets. When she closed the door behind her she looked at the colourful procession of people. She got exited from their strange clothing and especially from a boy with purple hair, that sure was as strange as being a Roane she thought smirking. Then two small girls, sister definitely and maybe twins came by on two white pony’s. One of the girls did a acrobatic trick on the back on the horse and her the other laughed at her and called her a show off. Hasel laughed and decided she wanted to go to see their show, only problem was she didn’t had enough money to buy a ticket for it, she probably had still enough left to buy food for a few days and she couldn’t spend it all in once on something entertaining.
That evening she walked over to the circus camp where they were setting up the big tent. She looked at the men that pulled on ropes and canvas and noticed it looked just like a big ant farm. In a flash she saw the purple haired boy again, she looked better and saw he was wearing jeans and long black boots his upper body was naked and shined of the sweat. She stood up and walked closer to the tent to have a better look at him when he noticed her. When she stood still he yelled her, shy she slowly walked to him, he said to her to hold the rope he was holding, she took it from his hands and stood still while he walked away. She was amazed and thought about what just happened, the handsome boy with the long purple hair just left her there with a rope. While she stood there waiting a big black woman walked over to her, she asked her what she was doing and she explained who she was and how she got there. The woman laughed and told Hasel her name was Sheila but she could also call her Cat. She explained that the boy’s name was Hendrik and that he liked to play games with people, he was a magician. She took the rope out of Hasel’s hands and told her she would show her everything while she tied it to a fence.
Chapter six
“The tour”
While they walked over the terrain Hasel saw the two white pony’s again and asked from who they were, Sheila told that they were from Lies and Marjo, the daughters of the boss. Hasel wondered if the boss what Chinese to and Sheila laughed, she said ‘they were adopted as baby’s and that they were not from china but from Tibet‘. “What kind of act do they do on the pony’s?” Hasel asked. Sheila said they did an acrobatic act on their backs. While Sheila was talking Hasel looked at her, she had a dark skin her ancestors probably came from a county like Kenya. A long straight nose and a high forehead covered by straightened dark brown hair. Her full lips moved while she spoke about the sword eating man. Hasel looked at the thick dreadlocks and wondered if white people could have dreadlocks to. Sheila stopped and started to whisper, saying to her that she had to stay where she was and walked away. Hasel looked around the corner of the trailer and heard her speak to Hendrik saying that the big tent just collapsed because of a loose rope. She was dead serious and her face looked worried, she really let Hendrik believe it and her run off. When he was out of sight she called Hasel and asked if she saw everything, Hasel laughed and said yes. While they walked further Sheila pointed to her own trailer and asked Hasel if she would like a cup of tea.
While they sat down and talked about Sheila’s agile body Sheila asked Hasel what her specialty was. Hasel stuttered that she wants really good at anything, that she didn’t even had a job. When Sheila said that she had to be good at something Hasel said “I’m kind of good at swimming and fishing“. Sheila smirked and said ‘I could have known that, because you life near the sea’. Hasel told her about her father the fishermen and that the sea takes and gives. Suddenly they heard the voice of Hendrik asking ‘what do you mean with that?’ Surprised she asked him how long he had stood in the door opening, he answered ‘long enough’. he took a cup of one of the shelves and got himself tea before he sat down. ‘we haven’t introduces us properly yet young lady’ he said while reaching out his hand. Hasel shaked his hand and told him her name was Hasel Vischer. Sheila smirked and said that she could have expected that. Hendrik looked at her with a naughty look in his eyes and said ‘pleasure to meet you, I’m Hendrik van Sternen’.
