Personality: Raised near the dread forests and icy slopes of Casa Tiner, Clytaemnestra has been forged into a creature of steel: cold, hard, sharp and unforgiving. As Commandante of a large herd's militia, she suffers no fool, spares no lawbreaker and privately delights in her - not undeserved - fearsome reputation.

Location: Wherever her duties take her. She has little interest in staying in one place after her work there is done, though between missions she will usually return to her tree for food and rest.

Clytaemnestra's Tree is located in the Northeastern Quadrant

The tree before you is vast, its wide trunk stretching up to the heavens in the manner of a stone tower. Its bark is a deep charcoal grey, craggy like a cliff face or broken masonry. Strange, papery leaves grow outwards in shades of cream and tan brown, and long, thin strands of a white moss-like vegetation hang in curtains from the gnarled boughs. Signs of damage can be seen on the trunk and the few exposed roots: where the tree has healed itself, deep red sap has congealed in clots and rivulets like so much dry blood.

All around the tree, heavy stone boulders have been moved together to create a makeshift wall. More lumps of rock rest within the perimeter, and upon these are scattered grisly remnants of living creatures: bones, horns, teeth, skulls, claws, pelts, hides and feathers, all in no discernable order. Either these are offerings to some mighty god, or they are trophies of war. Given the size of the hoofprints hereabouts, the latter seems more likely.

Sir,

Research indicates Greek myth of Agamemnon's death may be significant - killed by wife Clytaemnestra. Further information follows.

Clytaemnestra was the daughter of Tyndareus and Leda, mortal sister of the half-immortal Helen of Troy and of the famous twins Castor and Pollux (Polydeuces). Her children with Agamemnon (king of Mycenae) were Orestes, Electra, Chrysothemis and Iphigeneia - this last was killed by Agamemnon, sacrificed to the goddess Artemis in order to provide fair winds for the Greek army sailing to Troy. In Agamemnon's ten year absence, Clytaemnestra began an affair with Aegisthus (kinsman of Agamemnon, supposedly raised by a goat - significant?) and had a daughter, Erigone, by him. Upon Agamemnon's return, she persuaded him to commit the crime of hubris (arrogance, thinking oneself greater than the gods) by walking on fine tapestries. Shortly afterwards, while he was bathing, she ensnared him in a cloth and stabbed him to death.

Various threads arise, including the word "aegis" - the shield of the gods, possibly goatskin - and Clytaemnestra as the hand of vengeance, mercilessly striking down her daughter's killer. Clearly daughter Iphigeneia holds more importance than husband. Shall I pursue?

Thirteen,

No further information required on second thread, clear enough as is. First thread investigate: what about the gorgoneion? Where is my snake-maned daemon? Will it assist me in protecting others or is it a trophy for my shield? For that matter, am I to make the aegis from Aegisthus? Personally I believe my hide is the shield, that the herd operates under my aegis, but nonetheless watch his thread closely.

Also, congratulations: you have accidentally named my firstborn daughter.

Sir,

Another "snake" arises later in the tale. Son Orestes was represented by a snake in Clytaemnestra's vision. He later killed her. I advise caution.

Regarding your daughter: my thanks. Iphigeneia is an excellent name, and I hope it does not lead her to the same fate as her namesake.

Glad you approve; be assured it will do no such thing. And if I have any sons, I shall be certain to check them for reptilian qualities.

Sir,

Have unearthed description of goat-headed winged creature Baphomet, origins in forced confessions by French Templars circa 1300. Often called a daemon, model for the Devil card in the Major Arcana of the Rider-Waite deck, falsely supposed to be worshipped by Freemasons, later adopted as a symbol by the Church of Satan, and though referred to as male notably has breasts and "one female arm". Various interesting symbolism about his body, as is usual in such depictions.

Significant?

Almost certainly. Particularly the androgynous qualities. Do you think a pair of twisted horns would suit me?

History: The Burning Times

We have reached the human lands.

Fire rages through the forest. Someone has caught up a torch from one of the houses and set fire to the undergrowth. As Nequus clash around me, some fleeing the blaze, others charging through them to pursue rivals, I stare into the flames and contemplate.

This is my doing.

I should have chosen one of them. They were both bull-headed, insensitive fools, but I should have chosen one of them. They would have been easy to control - easier, anyway, than they are now, at the head of their two rival factions doing battle for the right to stand at my side. Fools. They will think themselves heroes now.

A branch falls nearby, almost bludgeoning a terrified stallion. I am unmoved. Whoever he may have been before, he is nothing to me now. I have called a group of the most sensible mares together, along with their little ones, and together we will leave the rest of them to the mess they have created. It will not be hard for us to find males elsewhere: so many stallions wish for a harem, and so many of those are willing to give me the control I desire in return for my company. I know my companions feel the same.

The forest is withering at the touch of the fire. All around me, Nequus are killing, screaming, choking, dying. This is my doing, this mayhem, this death, this destruction.

But as I turn and gallop away through the flickering flames, their sharp tongues barely catching upon my body, I care not.

~*~*~*~

Clytaemnestra Says:

As I record this I am surprised at my own willingness to give myself up as a mate in exchange for power. Needless to say, I quickly discovered that my physical might was of greater value to a herd than my pulchritude. Meleager's herd owes a fair portion of its female population to our arrival in his lands some days later, and those who remain of my original party are as loyal to me as ever. I have made sure of that.

Re: Face of the Tyrant

~*~*~*~

The Event

Clytaemnestra meets Storm, and the two seem to get along well until the subject of Melantho is raised. We learn more about Clytaemnestra's motives, and Storm is unconvinced by them. The Seer leaves angry, and the Commandante, ever the sort to take advantage of a situation, has her followed: she may lead the soldiers to Melantho.

~*~*~*~

Clytaemnestra Says:

It is remarkable to think that such contradictions can be present within a single body. Storm has no patience with me, and yet she somehow puts up with Melantho. She loves the girl, or appears to, and yet she keeps her out in a dangerous world that she knows next to nothing about. She is shrewd, quick-thinking, and yet...she never suspected, I think, that I would have her followed. What an oversight. I suspect she will kick herself when she realises how easily I played her for a fool. And even in doing it, I did not lie to her.

I did not have to lie.

She will lead the stallions directly to Melantho, I hope. If she attempts to intervene I doubt they can overpower her, but I have more in reserve. The moment she stood in my way she became an enemy of the herd. And the herd, under the right leadership, is mighty indeed.

Re: Wanderings

~*~*~*~

The Event

Clytaemnestra meets Cressida shortly after Melantho and Aku have left her company. In the beginning the Commandante is all smiles, but once it becomes apparent that her quarry is becoming more dangerous - and that Cressida has lied about her whereabouts - she reveals the cold steel beneath her comparatively unassuming flesh.

~*~*~*~

Clytaemnestra Says:

A sweet exterior can so often conceal a rotten core. I have never hated liars so much as when they have hidden behind pretty faces. And innocuous faces, at that. I should have killed her, curse my weakness. She is too much like my mother, though: it would only have brought the demons back, and in numbers too great even for me to conquer.

In my spiteful mood, I wished I might have been mistaken about her mother and misled her. Not so now. I hope she finds her dying, as I once did, that she might better understand why Melantho must be kept under close guard - especially now that she might as well be the murderer as the victim. The break of the horn, the gash on his side - whether I like to admit it or not, she has more than just raw talent.

I never thought I would train such a fine killer without intending to. And, I admit, this has become less about protecting her than about seeing just how good she really is...
