"the homeschoolers are ten time smarter then public schoolers." attitude.

homeschooling is wonderful. its a great way to learn, but its no garunetee of superior intelect.

sure we got the sterotype that homeschoolers don't have friends, or that they will be dumb because their parents do not often carry a teaching degree, but is fighting a sterotype with another stero type really the answer?

the logic of it fails. first off a parent may have been educated by the state. this means we would be completly incompetent to teach our children. thus making it hard for our kids to learn at all.

second, some of the world smartest people including stephan hawkings went to school public or private. why then if homeschoolers are ten times smarter then anyone that went to school are they not rich and famous?

sorry, but i seen this crop up in homeschooling debates and it really makes me mad.

Actually, there have been studies on this and homeschoolers usually always turn out to be smarter. That isn't always the case though, true.

As for me, both of my parents were educated by the state, but are a lot smarter than most people. My dad is good at math and science, my mom at languages. And with as much reading as we all do, we tend to learn a lot more. I actually start to carry my school books around to read them on my free time.

But for one of my friends, she started out homeschooling and was supposedly supposed to be in 7th grade when she started public school. But when she told me how she did things, it made sense as to why she was brought back a grade.

It mainly depends on what curriculum you use, who teaches you, and how much you actually pay attention. I don't think I'm smarter than a lot of publically schooled kids due to the fact that I don't get much help with my work, but other homeschooled kids do and are smarter.

I'll agree to that. my main beef is the assumption that the home schooled kids will always be smarter. sweeping generalizations are not only hurtful to a cause they are just plain hurtful. it can make a new homeschooling parent feel inadequate because they might have been publicly schooled. goddess knows i question my own intelligence all the time. these awful spelling errors of mine are no help. I'm not saying anyone in the guild did this, i just think we should probably challenge it when some kid says it. especially when they say it in chat speak and with errors. I hate to think I'm considered dumber then that. whee

Its funny we do see that happen in a lot of home school debates. sweatdrop what they need to do is download this new Mozilla. I'm picking up everyones spelling mistakes. All I have to remember is to capitalize proper pronouns. this thing is addicting I hope don't become some obnoxious grammar nazi.

It really depends more on the individual person than on their form of schooling.

If someone has a desire to learn, nothing can stop them. They'll find ways to learn what they want, no matter what the setting. But if someone just can't be motivated, and has no desire, then no matter what you do, they're not going to be learning. "You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink."

Some public school students are brilliant, some stupid. Same for unschoolers/homeschoolers. It's not really fair to say they're smarter than public school students, and it's not fair to say they're dumber. It's person-by-person, and people in general need to stop trying to catergorize everone they meet.

That might be why I can't learn math. I don't really care for it.

Like I said, studies have been done that show that homeschoolers tend to be smarter.

this is true. some of us have limits that might not be helped by many styles of schooling.

Hmm, interesting question. It's often smart parents who home-educate, because they're confident enough to feel they can. The average parent says, "Goodness, I could never do that".

I think it's also the attention. I'll probably be home-educating my child (ren), which means it's be teacher:pupil ration 1:1 rising to 1:1.5 (I'd like three children), instead of 1:25.

Most people can't tell the difference between education and intelligence, so they just assume you're smart.

You need to say that there are some benefits to home-schooling over mass-education. If there aren't any, then everyone will just yell at you for changing something that was fine to begin with. It's just a fad. I have to dress a certain way because that's what's done, and if I don't do it, people hate me. *shrug*

actually homeschooling predates mass-education. http://www.hsc.org/professionals/briefhistory.php

its believed by john holt that school was created to train kids to do menial tasks and take abuse from authority figures to train them for factory work.

I think someting is messed up with me because I forgot stuff in a snap...sometimes I re-read it like 3 times to make sure I remember it but next thing I know its just gone. And I'm not like mentally challenged or anything so idk.

I don't think I'm smarter than publically schooled kids when it comes to math, science, history, etc. because my mom holds us back (and I just can't do math), but we have a lot more common sense than most people do. I also know more languages than they do. mrgreen

It all really depends on how the kid is taught at home. For example, my mom wasn't very strict with my sister and me, except when it came to math. We did each did one math lesson, which was 30 problems, a day with the Saxon method. My sister does fairly well with concepts once she gets them down, and math is my best subject. Not to brag, but I'm taking Trig. as a freshman this year, and I've been told I'm gifted with math. But then again, maybe that's because I enjoy math. But back to my original point, my mother was never very strong in history, so we didn't cover a lot of it and I have trouble memorizing dates and such because of that.

But because my mother never really forced us to do our work, I grew to enjoy learning and reading. I liked picking up a book and just sitting down to read, whether it was The Lord Of The Rings or Virgil M. Hillyer's A Child's History of the World. Most of my classmates who have been not been homeschooled hate, or dislike, learning because of the way the school system piles meaningless busy-work on kids.

But yeah, I don't think I'm ten times smarter than kids in public school. I just have more motivation and I actually enjoy learning. Also, my apologies if this was a bit long and if I rambled too much. ^_^;
