Ive always wanted to know which one is the best. I know that each one can be useful for a specific technique. The French grip promotes finger control. The Italian grip encourages a rather physical style of fencing and allows for much precision. The pistol (or anatomical) grip creates a muscular approach to fencing but it engenders neither the dexterous finger control of the French foil nor the directed strength of the Italian blade. Many do not use the Italian anymore so I dont expect many to own one...Ive always wanted one, so if anyone has any idea where I could get a ture Italian electric grip I would be happy xd So whats your opinion and choice, why?

Personally, when I'm not fencing Sabre, I use a pistol grip. It gives me a feel of strength and control that a french grip won't. I use pistols in both epee and foil. The build of a small uhlman pistol grip is my favorite, but I have fenced with other interesting grips. I just prefer my german pistol grips. ^.^

French! more hand room! Pistol has always cramped my hand and Italian is good for killing people (like in duels to the death) but not good for normal fencing (unless your really good)

I use Pistol because I can't controll a French grip very well. I've never seen an Italian before. Then again I haven't been fencing for a long time. What are they like?

An Italian grip looks like this: http://www.sword-play.net/Resources/Foil.gif. They are often believed to be illegal, but they are not, as long as they pass through the test gauge and nothing sticks out past the guard. Very few fencers use them.

Whatever is given to me. I only fence sabre but I know where a foil's off hand go. I know the target zones to foil and epee though so I could try to fence with them.

I use a french grip foil right now, since I just started, but I'm interested in the pistol grip. My hands are so small that it is very difficult for me to manipulate the french grip properly. I've never used a pistol grip, but I have seen them. If I ever buy a foil of my own I think I'll get one with a pistol grip. There are a lot of variations though. Is there a "better" pistol grip variation?

This is really a matter of preference. If you're fencing epee, the strategies you can use are dynamically different. With a French grip, you'll be using extended pommel most likely, holding it on the very end, which means a LOT of angulation and wider movements, plus you have a slightly longer reach. But if you're using a pistol grip, it allows very precise precision hits, giving you many more options. That's why I would go with a pistol grip, but once again, it depends on your style!

I prefer to use pistols for Epee and French if I happen to be fencing Foil (that's rare now). Italian grip? I've never heard or seen that one!

Pistol grip, of course! I've always been able to get more flexibility and power with the contoured grip.
