Thanks to my two entrants who are either willing to humor me no matter how crazy I get or nasty little art . Whichever. Works for me. whee
The art for the winning submission is of course still in progress but nearing the crux of the next contest I feel it's better to make the reveal officially just so's I can say who can't play. (Not that it matters but eh, I'm nothing if not she-who-attempts-to-be-thorough.
Here is a progress cap of the winner, all trussed up and ready for cgi-ing.

And finito:

The bad thing about Voli is he knows me better than anybody else here, and thus knows what sorts of things appeal to me not only as a person who is probably part weasel but also as an artist. Yes, I absolutely love detail but something that gives me scads of freedom will tend to be more alluring. There again, it also made it very hard to narrow down from the two I liked the best of his.
And of course I always like it when people throw ideas at me for art's sake rather than their own. V's a generous sort and that's why I love him so...
The good thing is, the votes were what really decided this thing so I don't have to feel bad for favoring the person who has the most inside info xd ...the funny thing is that both contestants ended up inadvertantly voting for themselves. Felly thought that was real cute. 4laugh

And then there's Maki. (I prefer the term "honorable mention" to "2nd place" but either works I suppose.)
Really I only churned this out because it didn't seem fair at all that with only two contestants one should be left out. I guess that doesn't make sense 'cause if there were THREE I would've ended up leaving two out...but that's my mind. I try not to make too many excuses for it.
And of course this is only a rough concept. Had the votes swung Maki's way this particular idea would've been sketched with a mind for a full-body view for eventual cgi. I'd have taken what was here to the art table and in this instance probably transferred parts of it to one of my larger pages (13 x 22 most likely) opened the face by extending the nose and dropping the mouth just a tic, widening the gaze and all that good stuff. Leather straps and laces would've been added into the clothing and the sweep and definition of the wings changed and other little details like patterning on the shoulder guards, folds in the cloth and a bit more jewelry here and there would've been added in. As well the brow ridge and horn cluster would've been connected with shadows, made slightly more ornate to match my original mental concept and again widened out to give the overall piece a less "pinched" appearance.
Then there would've been a short evaluation stage while I decided whether or not to do another clean transfer and I probably would have just to further reduce the sketchiness this would've had. The image of it came to me almost immediately upon seeing the entry but it wasn't 100% appealing and therefore the work would've had an extremely rough quality--much like it does here. My most expensive, most-fine inking pens stood at the ready to make this an easier transition from sketch to digital final. I was planning all along. =D I even went so far as to have a list prepared for the color swatch file I'd use when I got to the digital painting stage. 3nodding
But alas.

Both are really nice, felly. I'm glad to have an honorable mention. Alas, i never win anything wink But...that's probably ok, cause the character was too detailed--one artistic person suggesting what another artist do rarely comes out well, hmm? just cause they both have their own ideas and want artistic license....anyway, i'm rambling now....need sleep....need to translate latin to english...need sleep...

Words cannot express how devastated I am that I cannot participate in the art contest. Pending art more than makes up for it though. How're you going to tackle it? And would it be bad for me to whine through my nose: water again?

As enamored as I am of your pink crayon happy face renditions I'm thinking they wouldn't fit in the contest all that well. *snerk* As for the rest of it, wait and see young grasshopper...wait and see.
Maki>Thank you. ^_^ However I have to disagree with the character being too detailed. I mean sure, the whole art challenge thing was for open brainstorming purposes but more detail usually is better regardless of if you have two artists hashing it out or not. And the thing about artists making suggestions...well, generally an artist will know better what translates onto the page than someone who doesn't even dabble.
I have two really good friends in particular that like to throw art my way more often than anybody else. One (Eric) is an artist and writer, the other (Jacks) is a writer and a gamer. Both have a phenomenal grasp of imagery in prose. Both are able to present me with mind-blowing concepts thoughtfully written out, clearly presented and often leaving me no need for the usual follow-up questions I have to ask with any and all other requests.
However...Eric as an artist already understands when he sits down to write that a disturbing number of things won't translate visually into art even though they can be easily imagined from writing or through writing. He's able to give me the writing for appreciation purposes and then break down the request in a way that's easily translated AND leaves room for that wonderful convention--artistic license. (WHEE!)
Jacks as the writer, the whole writer and nothing but the writer doesn't really understand that translation problem. He's never been up to his elbows in it, never broken it down to fundamentals. Instead he just comes on like a tank, throwing image after image at you and fully expecting you to be able to come through.
(I remember in one instance he commissioned a couple from an ongoing series of novellas of his and he went on at length about the type and placement of the woman's scars, her style of dress and her manner. Well...the bottomline was he had so many things in contradiction when it came down to the actual drawing of the characters that the whole project was a complete travesty. The clothes he told me to put her in completely covered the scars but he wanted the scars regardless...and he wanted to argue with me about length of hair vs. length of hair in a braid. It was all very silly.)
Working with Jacks has a silver lining though. He always gives you so much material that even when you weed out the things that just won't work on the page there's still a bushel of stuff to challenge yourself with.
And to address the artist-to-artist issue again and in a slightly different direction: I still maintain that my best work has been (90% or more) requests, trades and commissions. It's just kinda sad that my portfolio has moved so often and my computer a-sploded so many times that I've lost a great deal of the best of the old requests. That and I don't run with the same crowds I used to so I don't get the same volume of R&C's.

*hugs* i'm sorry you've lost so much of your work.
hehe...my brain's been really out of it lately. I did get a good night's sleep last night though. FINALLY! Woot. so if that continues, I should be able to actually come up with comprehensible ideas and actually kinda understand what other people say without having to reread posts or really think.

*hugs back* Thanks. Though technically it's my own fault. Ignorance of the best way to handle important files is not innocence and all that. The only place it really chafes is involving a Gargoyle character I have called "Tessa." She was stolen line for line and color for color and I don't have the original color piece to back up my claim. It's old news anyway but like I said...it really chafes. xp Anything else I could probably re-create or re-do entirely with the exception of some of my digital "oil paintings" just 'cause I don't have the program I used anymore. *le sigh*
Boy I'm whiny today.
Re-reading and really thinking is highly underrated. heart

Later soon or later-later enough that you'll just forget? RE: "Wolvy": That's an option, though I have that more pegged for Row's theme.
