I think that these books are probably the best fantasies that I have ever read. I have read them 4 times, and they never get old.
I love Mrs Coulter! Yay for her!

I avoided reading them for several years on some unconcious principal (I do this frequently) but then ended up reading them. Yes, they were very very good though I've still only read them once. I do prefer Abhorsen though...

I loved Abhorsen, but it didn't have the moral depth of His Dark Materials.

Yes, I see what you mean but... well... hm. I don't know, my favorite is the Amber Spyglass, that's the last one, right? The ending where they fell in love and then couldn't see each other was kind of predictable. Then again, it was obvious that they'd get rid of Orannis at the end of Abhorsen so it can be argued both ways.

I believe that the His Dark materials books are better in that they have less open ends & so i'm not so temped to wonder what happens to the characters. On the other hand i'd use the same argument in favour of Abhorsen although i found the one after main series release (creature in the case) disapointing for fans as it dosn't explain annytihng more about the characters really. I'd like to see a whole new trilogy exploring what happens to nick after he crosses the wall, possibly with sokme sort of rebbelion against the monarchy.
As i may have mentioned to Emmanuela i am very anti-monarchy. WHile certainly i respect Nix's work, unfortunately they do convey a very pro monarchy view, even in the Keys to the Kingdom trilogy where the architct is clearly a ego maniac responsible for numerous human/ denizen rights breaches. THis idea is explored in book 4 (Thursday) & may be further developed in Lady Friday (4 weeks). I apologise for my ramblings.

(I don't remember quite as much as I'd like to about that Trilogy, but Mrs Coulter was a c**t. Lord Asrial, on the other hand, was completely hardassed XD Wonderfull set of books though - I heard a Film was coming out, but it's being called "the golden compass", cos the Americans are gonna be making it... bastards... And, what's more....
"In an interview published on the internet in December 2004, Weitz indicated that the film would make no direct mention of religion or of God, two of the key themes of the trilogy – a decision attacked by fans of the novels. Weitz stated that New Line Cinema feared that "perceived antireligiosity" would make the film financially unviable in the US. However, Weitz attempted to reassure fans by saying that religion would appear in euphemistic terms. He also indicated that he believes His Dark Materials is "not an atheistic work, but a highly spiritual and reverent piece of writing" "

Mrs Coulter was amazing!! Best character in the books. Lord Asriel just annoyed me. And I know, I was so upset when I heard that they were going to take religion out of it!! That's the whole point of it.

( SPOILER WARNING) But... but... she was the one who tricked all the children into going on that foul religious experiment at the very beggining... and burnt the letters and stuff.... By my Logic, that makes her a complete ******** fascist c**t. (Asriel, however, did have vision XD Though... what he did with Roger wasn't nice either) They should let us make it. I mean, Philip Pullman must be fuming when he learned of what they'd do to his Masterpiece...

I love evil characters who are so intelligent. Mrs Coulter died for her daughter's future, and the future of every being alive. In my mind she redeems herself. Yeah, I agree. Pullman must hate them...

Shame on American filmwriters, they should have order restraining them from entering bookstores or touching english literature. While (& these are pullmans words not mine) "the book is about Lyra" it will remove a key factor in the books, the entire last book's driving force is killing god. Americans need to understand whatfreedom of expression means... & not be so worry'd about upsetting Christians. At least the C of E admitted that it was only explicitly against religion as a means of surpression & thought it a good book, the catholic church is against it outright along with the Da Vinci code & Harry Potter (Witchcraft). Said the Pope to his Cardinal's, "What do we talk about on Jesu's burthday, GLobal warming & famine, or a children's novel."

My favourite character was probably Lee Scoresby. He was really brave and basically a nice guy. I liked Iorek too heart
Mrs. Coulter I didn't like much - she seriously scared me! I hate women who use their looks to manipulate people and I really dislike ruthless and cruel people who don't seem to have a moral bone in their body. *shudders* And what she did to those poor children in the first book... sad That said I do think she was a well-written deep character not a one-dimensional baddie, and her role was essential to the plot.
My favourite of the series was definatly book two: The Subtle Knife.
