not that i'm a nationalist or something but i hear many difference between american progressive metal. and the progressive metal from europe.
progressive metal started in amerika and stayed a very long time there. but the last 15 (?) years it came to the lands of europe. but not completely the same, most of the earopean bands doesn't sound like the original american bands at all! some of the bigger american bands: queensryche. fates warning, rush, spock's beard. and a say that the whole devin townsent thing is american too, since it's on the other side of the ocean. some european bands: the arjen lucassen projects, pagens mind, opeth, riverside, evergrey and pain of salvation. and even some russian prog: mechanical poet.
so now: what do you think of both "genres". do you have a favorite? or do you think that all prog is just the same? tell me. 3nodding

Wow, that's hard for me..I'd actually have to say American. Now, I'm not saying the Euro-Prog bands are bad, I listen to a good amount of the Euro-Prog..But there's two bands in America that it's just like...Good Game..
Dream Theater and Symphony X.

I prefer European artists. Due to their external-genre influences, there's so much variety in the the tune and tone of the music, and so many different sounds for it all to take. There's a vast amount of potential in it, and while I like American progressive artists as well, they're all pretty much stuck to a conventional sound.

No, and neither does it cover American artists either. Music's tricky when it comes to making correct generalizations.

I don't really see why (or how) there could be a preference over another. If a separation has to be made I think European bands are less technical-oriented while US-bands tend to make music their personal playground. A huge generalization though.. sweatdrop
Putting DT and POS against each other makes the game very clear, but then you have a large number of bands that don't really distinct themselves that much from the mass - on both sides of the "puddle".
I have to say that in my music collection I have a vast majority of European bands but that is not because of any preference, it's just because I know more European bands. wink

Although I don't have a preference, I like the European prog. It's refreshing for prog fans since there aren't very many new neo-prog and progressive metal bands in America.

As far as my preference goes, I really don't have one. Both are highly enjoyable to listen to, and both bring something different to the table.
