Immediately after World War II, a conflict began that would eventually escalate into one of the longest wars ever faced by the United States of America. What started as a scrimmage between French forces and their eastern colony would eventually grow into a U.S. aide-based cause before finally transforming into a destructive and brutal war that was seen, by many, as a breakdown in government leadership. During this time, the economy of both sides would be strained. More importantly, however, would be the impact of American society and culture; the latter was particularly revolutionized by the war-time protest movements. In the end, the Vietnam war became a blotch in the American worldview that eventually bred increased distrust between the government and its people.

The economic costs of the war were staggering. In terms of casualties, the United States lost 58,209 men throughout the war, with another 153,303 wounded. The memorials to the fallen in Washington stretch on seemingly forever (Source A). However, beyond the actual casualties, the pure cost of the war spiked government spending, and thus taxes. Estimates of the war cost range as high as $1.5 billion dollars. While this may not be seen as a significant number in a day when government spending regularly surpasses this figure, it was a difficult blow to a government only just recovering from the devastating effects of World War II. Beyond the economic cost, however, the political, social, and cultural effects of the war were far more lasting.

From the beginning, Americans resisted combat involvement in what they perceived as a relatively insignificant war. President John F. Kennedy attempted to take the middle road, not committing excessively large troops to the conflict, but still sending moderately sized forces. Even this, however, received protest. When the war began, small numbers were being committed. At the very start in 1961, it was 400 Green Berets (Source E). When Lyndon B. Johnson took office, however, the number increased quickly. First, 3,500 marines were sent. Then, the volunteer army was dispatched. Finally, a draft was instituted. All received strong resistance and protest from college students and concerned citizens alike (Source E). Public outcry to events like the Siege of Khe Sanh, where the homebound citizens saw the brutality of the war (many for the first time) raised anti-war sentiments to such a fervor that the home front began to spiral out of control. At Kent State, police shot four protesting students to death. At the infamous 1968 Democratic National Convention, a police riot brutalized a massive group of protesters. With eerie ties to the concurrent civil rights movement, the protest of the war rapidly turned into a citizen-versus-government issue in which the anti-war Americans became distrustful of the government (Source B).

In the end, the peace settlement may have been the most stunning blow to the American people. Lyndon B. Johnson was already attempted to reduce troops levels and involvement in the war by the time his term in office ended. Nixon, too, continued this plan, relying on aerial bombardment to protect retreating troops and replace them on the battlefield. The Vietnamese guerilla tactics had beaten the United States ground forces. In 1973, Richard Nixon signed the Paris treaty to end the war, an event that was seen as an American defeat by many. Nixon believed that his countermeasures in the treaty would stop the spread of communism. In the end, however, the communist regime spread across Vietnam. From its early start to its final conclusion, the Vietnam war had not gone well for America. Now, it went down in history as a blotch on the face of American military supremacy over the world, and as a warning for future politicians.

I didn't say YOU were a furry, I said Ganon was a furry. Because, technically, he is. Though he's a snake-man. With wings. A sexy winged snake-man.

Your signature offends in it's flagrant ignorance and hate.
And here's my ctrl-v! (Explanation: The dragon, Veigh, had a miscarriage of one egg. And due to the nature of the roleplay you use yourself as the Rider character, so that's why she shares my name.)

“Don’t talk,” the Rider said, soothing her dragon with soft sounds and embraces when Veigh tried to say something and almost started bawling again. “It’ll be all right, it’s okay, see... Three beautiful children, and a mate who loves you...” Draconis herself wasn’t very sure about that. A lot of Kyns mated just to fulfill their instincts, and Veigh was young and naive. She glanced over to Ganon, and sat between Veigh’s foreclaws on the edge of the nest. “Three wonderful eggs, who all need names.”

“Wua- one is Esprit,” Veigh managed to get out, taking a shuddering breath and pointing at the pedestal.

Draconis nodded. “That’s good... I’m sure she loves you, too. She’s in a good place, and she won’t forget you.” The Rider wasn’t sure how she knew the gender of the broken egg, but she did. She hugged her blood-marked Kyn again, and tried to draw her attention to the living. Veigh was young, and may not appreciate what she had. “We need names for them.”

The distraction worked, and Veigh nudged the closest one with her nose. “She’s Niarye,” the mother said, blinking as the final tears left her eyes. She looked up to the vacant place Schnurrbart left, and slowly, as though underwater, looked to see where he went. He was too far for her to reach from this position, so she reached with her eyes instead. “I think you should come help,” Veigh said, a little of her former self returning. “Before I cover them, and then it’s hard to choose names when you can’t see...”
