"Wake up, little one. Come on, wake up."
Chamiyu smiled upon her beloved baby girl and nuzzled her with her slick black nose. Today was a perfect day to guide her youngling cub into the outside world. For a while now they had been living in the cave. Chamiyu was taking care of her children and Mteuli was doing his preistly duties and watching over them at the same time. Now, however, was a beautiful chill morning and the parents both agreed that they would take out one of the children. Besides, Chamiyu was running out of herbs and the herbs she needed were just a little ways away from the cave.
Chamiyu licked the cub once more and said again in her soft tender mother voice, "Come on, now. We've got to go."

Chatalahe woke up, opening her eyes and realizing what day it was and immediately jumped to her feet. Excited to finally leave, she started jumping and pouncing every were, including on top of her mother. “I’m up! I’m up! Lets go! Lets go!” She said in an impatient voice. She looked around for her sister and father who are usually there when she wakes. Chatalahe was almost always the last to go to bed which caused her to wake up late. “They left before us! We need to hurry so we can stay out longer.” she said with a smile, still not being able to stand in one place. Leaping towards the exit while drying her face from her mother’s licks. “Common mom. lets go!”

"Yes, they did leave without you! You sleep like a rock, you know."
Chuckling softly, the mother followed slowly after her child. She was amazed at what energy the child had and tried to decide which side of the family it came from. Probably from Mteuli's side, she supposed. Then she chuckled, imagining the youth of her beloved as excited and lively as little Chatalahe.
"Don't get too ahead of yourself," Chamiyu warned her gently as she came close to the exit of the cave and got on her herbal gathering basket that hung like a necklace from her neck, "Alright, we may go, but stay nearby where I can see you, understand?"

“Okay”
Chatalahe was busy getting herself ready to go explore the outside. She loved it. She was always a very curious lion. She started off rolling around on her back in the grass feeling the morning sun and breeze on her stomach. She then saw a cricket jump by and as a reaction she started to lightly growl at it. As it sat on a rock also enjoying the morning, she crouched up to it slowly and with one great leap she pounced on the small cricket and caught it! “I caught it!” She was so surprised of her first catch being her first try. Chatalahe didn’t want to hurt it, just play, so she let it go and watch it hop away.
Chatalahe realized she forgot to try to stay close to her mom. She looked around for a second and saw her mother not 30 feet away picking at plants. Chatalahe leaped over and bumped into her mother’s hip with her head.
“Mom! Mom! Did you see that!?! Did you see what I did!?!”

"No, I didn't, little one. What did you do?" asked the mother lioness as she finished tucking away a bundle of rosemary. Sitting back upon her haunches, she smiled tenderly upon Chatalahe and ruffled her head with a gentle paw. She was so happy to get out of the cave and feel the warmth upon her silken black fur. It had been so long. Today was a chill winter sunny day too, a wierd break in the weather patterns of the cold season. It was supposed to be raining, but it was bright and crisp and chill.

As a butterfly sailed by on a breeze, Chatalahe followed it with her curious eyes as she spoke to her mother distractively.
“Never mind, it’s nothing important mother”
Chatalahe started jumping and leaping towards the fluttery creature. Unfortunately it flew off higher than she could reach. She turned around and went next to her mother.
“Mother, where else are we going today?”

"To the stream nearby," answered the mother as she followed her daughter, nudging her along the path they were following. Her slick black body shielded her daughter's bouncing body like a huge hulking protective shadow as the sun came up in the east.
"Are you sure you don't want to tell me what you did? Oh, Chatalahe, do you know what that is?" Chami indicated the fluttering creature that seemed to burn itself in the light of the sun.

“Dad told me once. It’s a Dragonfly…no wait, it’s a butterfly right? Dad said they didn’t always look like that. They used to look like worms, I remember cause I thought it was kinda funny.”
Chatalahe always loved learning about new things.
“So were going to the stream? Will there be fish?”
While walking next to her mother she was moving in every way she could think of. Leaping and walking backwards was Chatalahe’s favorite. She stopped from all the movement and started walking more like her mother, which made her think about her father and sister. She had never been away from both of them for so long and she missed them very much. But, she figured, they’ll be home by the time she and her mother get back. Chatalahe stopped thinking about it so much and decided to start mimicking her mother and the way she walked. Chatalahe put her head up high and stated walking at the same pace. She smiled at her mother once and stopped quickly so to concentrate on walking in her mother’s shadow.

"Yes, that's right, Chata, it's a butterfly and they undergo beautiful changes from a worm into a beautiful flying creature. You will be like a butterfly someday," Chamiyu purred gently, taking large even strides. The way she walked was almost as if she were dancing. She moved like silk.
Watching as her daughter tried out diffent ways of walking, Chamiyu chuckled softly and answered her last question, "Yes, that's where we're headed. In fact I can see the stream now. It's just over that hill. I don't know if there are going to be fish. We'll have to be quiet so we don't scare them away."

As Chatalahe tried to keep up with her mother’s steps and learn how to walk as gracefully as her. Chata thought about the stream and how wonderful that will be. She has never actually seen a real fish up close. She has only heard about them in stories that were told to her.
“I can’t wait! I want to see some fish…wait…mother? Are you calling me a worm?”

Chamiyu let out a laugh as clear as bellflowers and dew drops in the rain. Lifting up a great paw and ruffling her daughter's tuft of furr upon her head, the mother laughed softly, "Yes, in a way I am."

“Well that’s fantastic…”
As she mumbled under her breath. Chatalahe was getting a bit impatient at the pace they were going. She wanted to get there quicker so she decided to offer a suggestion.
“Mother if we go any slower my legs might grow into the ground. Do you think we can race to the stream? That is…if you’re not too tiered. You being old n’ all...”
Chatalahe gave a crooked smirk to her mother. She new she was being a bit of a smart a**.

"Old?" echoed the mother, looking at her daughter with surprise and laughter in her sky blue eyes. She took her daughter within her arm and licked her forehead until the furr went up in all directions, "I'll show you who's old."
With a quick flex of her muscles, Chamiyu bolted away from her daughter and left for the stream. She looked and moved like a black bullet. "Come on! You asked for it!"

Chatalahe jolted after her mother. On her way to caching up to her there was a bolder in her way. She jumped on it and bolted of the big rock launching her self of it and high in the air, landing perfectly on her feet. Chatalahe ran towards her mother with a smile. Surprisingly she kept up with her mother’s fast speed very well. In no time she was next to her mother, neck to neck. The fact that her mother was much bigger than her and Chatalahe was taking twice as many steps as her mother when running showed how good she was going to be when she gets older.
Even though they were so close Chatalahe didn’t take the time to look up because of her determination to win. Chatalahe was inching closer and closer to being in first. Finally Chatalahe was a nose in front of her mother in the race and started to gin.

Chamiyu grinned back at her daughter, laughing like bells as she chased the wind with Chatalahe. It seemed like they could run forever like this, when suddenly the black mother halted to a sudden abrupt stop. Moments afterwards, she skidded to a stop right before the stream and watched with amusement as her daughter careened into the water with a splash.
This was going to be a fun day and already, Chamiyu couldn't tell how much she loved her daughter.
