Discuss/Debate religion in this thread.

Some rules for this thread that will be enforced.

1. Just because someone's belief is different than yours, you should still respect their opinion.
2. Flaming/Insulting someone else because of what they believe in will result in Auto-Ban.

W00t! I shall be first. >.>;

Well.... I'm agnostic. :3 For those of you who don't know what that is, it means that I believe that one can neither prove or disprove a religion. :3

I do have some theories of my own about death, however. >.>; I'm a bit of a philosopher. :3

Anyone wanna hear about it? XP

I would like to hear your theories smile

I myself am a strange case, I'm an atheist, but I respect every religion, (my girlfriend being a catholic girl), I believe religions give spiritual and psychological support for those who decide to need it (and some who never question their childhood impositions)...

I believe in myself, I am the reason why I get up every morning, I love to live life for myself and I believe in an innate capability of the human being for being good, but also for selfishly destroy others. I believe in treating people as I would like to be treated, but don't forgive easily those who truly offend me (im a calm guy, so that's really complicated to do)... I know I am a great lover so I have no problem displaying my affection...

I would get into a more philosophical aspect on my beliefs but I see no need... I've always seen my thoughts reflected on the writings of Friedrich Nietzsche, but not all, I also disgress a lot with Mister Nietzsche in many points... I still cling myself to some kind of goodness for the world hehe...

anyways that's about it

Sure, I'll listen.

I am a Christian, and I proudly wear my cross necklace next to my Iron Maiden Dog Tag. I also wear my Christ for Life ring next to my abstinence ring. (so heavy Metal, I know) I'm at church 2/3 times a week, and I volunteer in the Pre-school area. I would consider myself a very good Christian, and when I talk to my friends, or even on forums, I always stand up for my religion. And Classion, If you're interested in hearing some of my points as to why there is a God and why the bible is true, let me know, I would love to have a conversation with you and hear your views. I won't judge you or try to force my views on you, just a discussion.

And doesn't agnostic mean you believe in a God, but don't believe in a specific religion? That's what I heard.

Heh, you believe in most of the things I do, except that I somewhat dislike religion, because most of the people in my country use it as an excuse to not work, or to put the blame of events on other than themselves. Not everyone though, because I know some people for whom, their God is a reason to live, and do the best in what they do, to be good people, to work hard, to respect, to love.

I hope nobody gets offended with this but, I HATE to believe in Fate. I for one do not like to think that my life is to be ruled by something already pre-set from the begining of it, because that truly leaves me with a feeling of emptyness, to think that I can't control my life, and that no matter what I do, it is not my will, but someone else's will, that also leaves me with the horrible feeling of not having the capability of changing those things which I don't like, or improving those I like. In short, it takes away my freedom, the most important thing I posses second only to my life.

I also do not believe that there is Justice in life. In life we sometimes don't get what we fight for, and sometimes we get what we didn't try to get. Also, punishments are a subjective thing, for some people, being one month in Jail maybe a torture, while for others it might be a walk in the park, not to menction some might not even be guilty of the crimes they were judged for.

However, for some reason I can not find, I still believe in a God.

It depends on the kind of Agnosticism, from what I have read, some Agnostic people believe in god, and others do not. In my eyes, Agnosticism is basically a label to put those people who do fit in any other religion so they can call them names and generalize their beliefs(without truly knowing them).

Not to offend anyone but Mister Nietzsche used to say, "Faith is not wanting to know the truth".

I used to feel the same way about religion when I was younger, I am still pasionate about my ideas but I've become wiser in matters of respect. What I incorporated in my thoughts for growing up a bit is: discuss ideas, not people. Sometimes it's difficult, but a philosophical, political, or religious discussion should fight and stand for ideas, not the people behind them.

Quote:
for some reason I can not find, I still believe in a God.

It is an imperative for most humans to find reason in oblivion.

The history of religion goes back all the way to the first humans trying to grab a hold of what they couldn't control.

You can't control it, but you know about it; that is a big psychological satisfaction that can sometimes lead to mental masturbation, that is those who spend more time on their knees at church than actually sorting out their problems.

Science today is the new religion, because it follows the same principle, to grab a hold of the unkown, and luckily end up manipulating it.

As ancient philosophers would tell you: chaos is opposite to order, and in chaos nothing exists, because nothing can go into chaos and nothing can get out of chaos. Order exists, therefore, in nature...

Humans have longed lately to control this order.

Well, I was originally born cathlic but now i consider myself agnostic in the sense that Angel of Metel referd to where I belive a god but no specific one. I believe this because If you call one religion right, you are calling millions of other people wrong and that dosnt seem right to me. I still believe in a god, but only because it is human nature to want to believe in something.

Agnostic is that you believe there is a god, but you don't have a religion, yes.

I thought I explained it? x.X;

Agnostic means you believe that you cannt prove, or disprove the existance of god. In other words, an agnostic is open to any belief, and some agnostics believe in the possiblity of god, but not in god. :3 Which I believe.

I believe, however, that if there was a higher being, it would not care wether or not we believed in it, since it gave us the ability to choose not to. As I undersand it however, according to Christianity, our soul purpose is to worship god. This confuses me because if this were true, it would mean that this god is one who is very selfish, which contradicts the teaching the god is perfect.

I don't believe in a certain set system of beliefs, which is why I'm Agnostic, but I do have a theory on what happens when we die.

It has been scientifically proven that we have 15 to 30 minutes of brain activity after we die. And what does the mind do when the body is inactive? You dream, of course. And have you ever had a dream that seemed to last hours, but only lasted minutes? Well, then those last few minutes could be like a second life time, which prepares you to slip into oblivion. Depending on how secure you are with your self, and if you feel like you have lived well, your mind will be a great place; the most wonderful imaginable. Kind of like Heaven. However, if you are not at peace with yourself, then you will be trapped inside of a nightmare until you slip into oblivion.

I don't necessarily believe this, but it is an idea. :3

And Angel, I'd love to discuss your beliefs with you. :3 I have had many conversations with good and bad Christians, and I rather enjoy discussing religion, dispite my lack of one. Isn't that something? biggrin

I don't know what happens once you are dead, but it is cientifically proven what happens when you are dying.

To control the pain and dispair it causes to die, especially if you are suffering from something, the brain has hallucinations.

The "light at the end of the tunnel" would be just that; in extreme pain, the brain relieves itself of total breakdown from taking away the attention from what's going on and focusing itself on certain images and shapes. Thus the hallucination of those who died for a sec. in the hospital telling you that they "see their bodies from above"; this is a proven effect of some types of drugs.

So wether you are dying or getting cracked with LSD, the effect would be just the same...

now, what happens after that... I can't say

To add to clasi's uncompleted definition X3 Agnostic is the lack of religion but the belief in the possiblity of a higher power. Which is what I am.

I have some really good theories...and I would love to share...but, you must invite me to share Xp

right well...

im a bit of a philosopher - after i get out of high school i want to major in philosophy actually.

my biggest influences are the existentialist: sartre, camus, nietzsche, and dostoevsky, mainly.

i am an existentialist, yes, and an atheist. in addition i lean towards what i call subjective nihilism - the idea that EVERYTHING is subjective and open to interpretation, that nothing is the same for any two people, and that there is no truth. as an existentialist i do not believe that there is no meaning to life, but rather, the purpose of our lives is whatever we as individuals choose to make it.

as i said, i do not believe in god, but i respect other people's religions and i recognize that they can do a lot of good.

going into political philosophy, i am an individualist, more extreme than the average libertarian but less extreme than the average anarchist.

i would be willing to share my ideas with anyone here, and to hear their ideas as well.
