(Feel free to move this to the Food subforum if it really doesn't belong here... I just figured people would see it more if it were on the front page.)
So. I'm a Chinese (and Japanese) food ADDICT. It's my favorite style of food. Lately I've been getting hunan chicken from a small restaurant that's within a 10-minute walk of my residence hall (dorm). I got it twice last week, because I seriously couldn't resist getting it. I think I'm pretty confident in saying that it's my favorite food in the world. The kind I get has chicken, broccoli, carrots, mushrooms, water chestnuts, and probably some other stuff... All in a brown sauce, and I put it on white rice.
So, I'm wondering--how healthy or bad for me is it? What Chinese food would be better choices, but still yummy? How strongly will having Chinese food once a week affect my plans to lose weight? ESPECIALLY considering the fact that my boyfriend and I go to Chinese buffets often, and I pig out every single time because it's all SO GOOD. XD
For the record, my favorite Chinese foods are hunan chicken, pork dumplings, wonton soup, fried wontons (horrible for me! I'm not eating them!), chicken and broccoli, almost anything with shrimp, and probably some others.
My favorite Japanese foods are tempura, California rolls, eel rolls, almost any other roll (haha), sushi rice (OMG, amazing <3)... etc.
Okay, I'm starting to make this way too long. So... post with answers, comments, and suggestions! :]

well, I think alot of it depends how its cooked, and what its cooked in. I know the feeling though, I totally pigged out at a china buffet last night. all the veggies are a plus though, I would say.

I'm also addicted to a chinese place in my town. One dinner can easily be over 1000 calories though so I don't eat there more than once a month. Twice a week will slow down your weight loss.

Ooo, I love chinese food as well. I think a general rule of thumb is anything fried or in thick/sweet sauces are not good. But I know there are some things that are fine, just not sure entirely what.

My weakness is Seseme Chicken and Lo Mein. heart What is bad is my class is literally next door from a Chinese restaurant and people in my class constantly eat it. I hate smelling my loves and yet not wanting to eat it because if it's calories.
I'm not sure what would be the best. I imagine the soups are probably the lowest calorie thing.

I had hunan chicken with white rice tonight, and water to drink, and I think it was about 500-something calories. Not 1,000. And I'll rarely have it twice a week. :3 I think that it shouldn't be TOO bad since it's mostly veggies and rice. The sauce is probably the only bad thing. Chicken's good for me because I don't eat enough meat. :] Not trying to come up with excuses--just saying that I probably gave off the impression that I was eating a lot, and a lot of crap, every week. And I'm not.

I found a website today that had hunan chicken under "do's" and wonton soup under "don'ts". :3 I think it's because there's going to be a lot of oil in the soup (the broth and the meat inside, too). The only thing bad about the chicken is the sauce that's on it, as far as I know.

I adore hunan chicken, but it doesn't taste very salty to me. More like sweet/sour. :3 I just bet there's a lot of salt in the sauces and the coating of various kinds of chicken. Plus soy sauce is used in a ton of dishes, and soy sauce is super salty.

Chinese food can be a lot like Japanese food, and a lot of japanese food can be good for you. If you're going to go for rice, go steamed, not fried for obvious reasons. Sadly for me I have to stay away from Chinese or Japanese because I'm highly allergic to rice. Weird, yes, but hey, what can you do? Lol.
Whenever I get chinese or go to a chinese buffet, I usually get green beans and lots of fruit. Chinese buffets have a great selection of fruits that you can choose from. So if you don't want to go and get high sodium foods, go for the fruit. Hey, they can't yell at you for eating it all either. mrgreen
When I order out, I like to get cashew chicken. There was this restaurant back in Pittsburgh that had the BEST cashew chicken. There was a lot to of chicken and veggies. The sauce was nice, very satisfying, but not that high in salt from what I could taste. I could be wrong since I don't know what all was in the sauce.

Chinese, mm.... ^_^;; I'm the exact same way, although we don't have it as often. I know anything dripping with sauce really isn't a good thing... Er, I guess you can try removing some of the sauce by shaking it, use a napkin and the like... I had to do that with the broccoli last time because it was just so greasy looking! O_o;

Oh god Chinese food... My faves are dried garlic boneless pork and wonton soup *cries* I can't believe it's in the danger zone... though I should have figured it out I have to grapple with the scale everytime I eat it!
I'm gopig to say that if it's fried it's a no no (i.e. tempura), but I've heard that the paste used to keep the sushi together is super good for people trying to lose weight. That's a plus (this was told to me by a dietitian by the way).

That's a plus (this was told to me by a dietitian by the way). What do you mean, paste? I've made sushi, and all it is is seasoned rice, seaweed, and whatever fillings you add. Oh! Do you mean the rice vinegar / salt / sugar mixture that you add to the rice?
