NB: REAL moderators, administrators and any other Gaia staff

WILL NEVER EVER ASK FOR YOUR PASSWORD!

If it says they are going to ban your account/make you a mod/test the battlesystem IT IS A SCAM!!!!!

Right, now that's cleared up...

So many people are getting hacked! The mods are very backlogged in hacking reports so it takes ages to get round to all these victims! Some hackers will use things such as keyloggers to get your password. Others may use scams to trick you into handing it over. Whatever they do to get your password, they then use it to access your account. They can then send your items to their account via selling them, trading them or sending them as gifts. gonk

This is a little guide to protecting your account from these evil people.

~Protect Yourself From Scams!~

User Image

THIS IS A SCAM!!

Fictional User
It says I will be banned though! It's from a mod, so I should send them my password!

NO!!!! It's NOT a moderator, so how can they ban you!? It is just an ordinary user! (Albeit a very mean one. And stupid.)

Fictional User
How can I tell it's not a mod!?

Mods will never ask for your password!
Also, moderators names are in colour. This guy's name is just plain black.

Fictional User
Their avatar is greyed out! That must mean they are a mod!

No. They just deleted their avatar.

Fictional User
Their name has [MSL] next to it!

They just called their account [MSL] Ban Manager Member. A professional-looking username does not a moderator make.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, to protect your account from scams, just remember these things:

MODERATORS, ADMINS OR ANY OTHER GAIA STAFF WILL NEVER ASK FOR YOUR PASSWORD!! They do not need it to check your trade history, make you a moderator, test the battlesystem or WHATEVER it is they tell you.

Moderators, admins and NPCs have coloured names.

Grey avatars are not mods' avatars. You too could have a grey avatar if you wanted! You just have to click: User Image

Any tags on the name, such as [NCP], [MOD], [MODERATOR], [GAIA], {MUD-RATER} also DO NOT MEAN ANYTHING! THEY ARE FAKE!!

Also!
This applies to any emails you receive as well!!

Fictional User
What should I do if someone tries to scam me????

Report them!

Then they will not be able to scam anyone else!

Just click the "Report this PM" button underneath the message, near to "Post Reply". razz

~Protect Youreslf From Computer Programmes!~

Some hackers have a different tactic. They will use computer software to work out or steal your password! There are several ways to protect yourself from these people.

1.Get ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE!

Install trusted antivirus software to your computer. I'm not a technical person. I have no idea what software is best, but you need some! Also, you should always take precautions against viruses, for example: don't open files you receive unless you know for certain what they are! Remember, some clever geeks can disguise viruses to look like harmless files, like pictures, videos and documents! Don't be fooled!!

2.Protect your Passwords!

Make it hard to guess!
If you like Meatloaf, and say you like Meatloaf in your profile, and have multimedia of Meatloaf, then Meatloaf will be what the hacker starts with. So don't use "meatloaf" as your password! And don't use "meetloaf" "meat.loaf" "eatloaf" etc. A hacker might take a few days, but a computer can guess it in seconds!!

Make it hard to work out!
A password like... "popcorn" or "rainyday" is pathetic. A computer programme will guess it in seconds using an Internet Bot. These evil bits of software can go through thousands of words each second! Even though Gaia has a system to protect hackers from using this technique (by banning the IP of a computer that incorrectly types in a password many times) don't be lazy!!

Having trouble creating a password?

Idea 1: Open up Notepad, slap the keyboard (perhaps twice or three times to make it extra-safe):

get6aou;]5

^ This is what I got. It could be a great password! It's got letters, numbers and punctuation thingies. It's 10 characters long. Brilliant! But hard to remember...

Idea 2: Take a word you can remember, preferably quite long, e.g.:

grapefruit

Add in some numbers instead of letters:

grap3fru1t

Add in some punctuation instead of letters:

gr@p3fru1t

Add a bit extra complicated stuff, like...... more numbers and puctuation!

234gr@p3--fru1t468

Woah! What a horrible password for those nasty bots to work out!!

Don't write it down and leave it lying around!

Duh! Someone could easily see it! xD

Don't save it on your computer!
Be paranoid! Stay safe! A hacker could break into your computer's files if you haven't protected them, and they could find it!

Don't share it with ANYONE!
Even your closest friend! One day you might fall out, and he/she might steal your things! It's happened before, it'll happen again... Don't let it be you!

Don't use the same password all the time!
This is important! If a hacker manages to hack your account, he/she will probably check that password with your email account too. If they're the same, they now have access to your email! They can request your passwords from other websites! Ask for personal information such as bank details! DO NOT, EVER, NEVER, NEVER use the same password for everything!!

3.Check you are logging in to http://www.gaiaonline.com/

People have built websites to look exactly like Gaia, or that claim to be a new feature of Gaia, e.g.: a Battle System test website. They trick you into typing in your username and password. The username and password are then sent to the hacker, who can easily access your account.
NEVER TYPE IN YOUR PASSWORD ON ANYTHING BUT http://www.gaiaonline.com !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Note: The passwords used here are just made up right now, they are not in use by me, and have never been used by me. Don't use them as your password either!
