Very often, when I sit down to write, I have difficulty getting started. I know, or assume, that this is not just me, and that most of the writing world has these feelings. Writer's block, I suppose. Writing, I guess, is similar to art; you need an idea, and it's hard to come up with one (that is unique, different, and clever, of course). I've gone through a sort of writer's block after writing a fairly short story for my English class. So, I was wondering what gets you inspired, and how you stick with your initial idea.

What gets me inspired:
Seeing other people do well, and wanting to outdo them. D: I'm a horribly competetive person.
Though, a lot of times, I can read through my old stuff and take ideas from there and refine them. I've done that several times...

I wish I could tell you, but I don't really write nearly as much as anyone else here. I try.
I'm actually writing historical fiction right now. The thing that inspires me is when I find more information on the Saint I'm working on (St. Francis Xavier).

I seriously wish I knew what inspired my story D: I wanted something new, fresh, unique, and something that I would enjoy a lot.... I thought about a bunch of options, and then this neat idea just popped into my head.
I guess just wanting to leave my mark on the world, wanting to share my work with people, and just having fun writing inspire me. Of course, I get inspiration from nature, or events that happen in my life or others' lives, from songs I hear, or poetry, or even objects. Whatever sparks my creativity and imagination, really. If I can take something and mentally mold a scene around it, or incorporate it into something, or say "Hey, that's cool.", then it's inspiration.
When I get writer's block, I do something else and toss the idea around in my head, creating different options and solving glitches. Music helps, especially when I need to create a mood during a difficult scene.
Did that help at all ?

I will very rarely just 'sit down to write'. Usually I have to be inspired to begin with. Usually I get a lot of my ideas from my drama (formerly creative writing) class. My teacher is awesome and we do next to nothing in class. It's AWESOME. However, I get a lot of ideas from my friends, either talking to them or just sitting there and watching them. My friends are freaks and I love them, and they end up doing a lot of weird things, so a lot of my little character quirks comes from them. I also write things that I wish would happen (ie. that incredibly cute guy at school that I've had a crush on for two years asking me out...<.<). So yeah. Mi inspirationo... biggrin

I dont really force myself to be inspired. IT attacks ME like some sort of rabbid animal. Inspiration is all around you every second of every day. You may see something and think "huh...that would make an interestign setting/character/plot/etc.) and suddenly there is your inspiration. Believe me, it is happening to you all the time. My reccomendation is to cary a pad of paper with you. When you hear something that woudl eb a good line for a book, write it down. When you think of the name or personality that woudl fit a character, put it down.
IFy ou do this, when you actually sit down to write, you'll have a notebook full of insparation to work off of, and so many ideas that you'll NEVER get bored!

I ... just don't have a life. Okay, that sounded odd, but usually I'm either thinking of my story, my friends, or theories for Lost (that broke monotone). My story bounces into my head the most (my poor, negelected friends) often so I constantly think of new ideas. This is actually bad for my writing because it causes the story to change a lot and me to start at the beginning again.

I get inspired by books. I know, that is sort of different, but it's me. Whenever I read something, a particular scene will just captivate me and draw me in. Before I know it, I'll be laughing/crying/angry/proud/astonished/betrayed, and I just know that that is what I want my story to do. I want people to read it and feel like they're in the story. I don't want to let my stories just be words; I want them to be feelings, actions, and outlets for everything readers know and want and feel but can't. I'm rather emotional, I know, but I like writing that is deep, not shallow drivel some people put on the market.

Oftentimes whenever I am angered or frustrated, I immediately start writing. For some reason, it really helps. Also, just being out in tune with nature can really start me up.

That's ... like my dad actually. He tends to be a little sloppy at things until he gets frustrated and within the week the database is done. I think it confuses the rest of them.

~@~Forget regret, or life is yours to miss A lot of times it is the people around me, or something I see. And there are other times when I'm not even thinking about my story that an entire scene will play through my head, and I have to write it down.
When I get a block I either just step away or use one of the techniques that I picked up. Each of my characters and many of my scenes have a theme song, I listen to music when I write, and if I really want to write a scene with a certain character I play their theme. Or I free write, which is just open up a blank page and write whatever comes to mind, no matter how fragmented or crazy. I also read through what I have and see if I get anything from there. No day but today~@~

My inspiration comes from all over, and tends to come at the oddest moments...I cannot tell you how many characters have waltzed into my brain while I'm doing dishes and how many poems have been composed at the laundromat... usually it's triggered by something someone said or something I've heard or seen. And embarassingly enough, it's usually a sight or song or phrase I've heard a thousand times over...and for some reason it suddenly gives birth to this new storyline. lol. Sometimes I rewrite the same kind of story three or four times, and then combine all the fragments into one awesome (or not as awesome) story. And occasionally, just occasionally, I'll just start writing, and the characters will do all the work for me. But that's rare.
I doubt that helped much, though...sorry! A quote that might comfort you, though:
"Every writer I know has trouble writing." -Josef Heller

I just think of names and the world and the character will end up doing all the work after that. ah well.

Domerin Thompson I just think of names and the world and the character will end up doing all the work after that. ah well. HA! You are so lucky! I have a few characters that write themselves, but the majority of them make me stop and think... sad (A harder task than you'd think... wink )

Characters grow from their names, espiecally if they are names that have not been used before, like in fantasy.
