Chapter One: The Outcast Girl

Aya Suntail was an average girl. She was 16, 5’6”, had long brown hair and olive toned skin, loved chocolate, and hated sprouts. She was physically pretty, but her temperament kept her from being considered drop dead gorgeous. She loved to win; losing in something was never an option. Her dancing and her school record were impeccable; all trophies and awards.

Yet there were certain things that set her away from other people. One was her eyes. They were much more like a cat’s: more yellow then green, yet always referred to as green for it sounded more “normal.” Another was her openness. If she had something to say, it would be blunt and honest. She turned boys down with a “No thanks, I’m not interested in you at all,” or an “I don’t like you… sorry but not sorry!” This aspect of her made others frown at her and scorn her. However, the last aspect of it was the most outlandish one of all.

Her wild dreams.

Aya would dream of strange things, things that would feel realistic and make her believe she was truly there until she woke up to her alarm clock’s screeching. They were of people who could fly, create fire with a word, and make objects explode. They were of magical forests and weapons with powers beyond imagining. They were of phoenixes and dragons, of sea monsters and vampires, of angels and demons. And when she came to school, if someone asked something about them, she would go into an amazing story of what adventure or romantic encounter had happened that night. It frightened people, and therefore they responded with laughter and abuse.

But Aya didn’t care about all that. All she new was her goal: graduate. She had only two more years left before she escaped. All her friends would lose contact with her and she would meet new people, and begin a new life away from home. She hoped to find some way into a different world with people that would accept her, where the guy of her dreams lived and waited for her. Little did she realize it was literally possible.

Anyway, we need to start our story!

Aya was standing in line, gazing at the dark window of the cafeteria. Today was registration for her new classes, even though it was 3 weeks before school would start. Her friends hadn’t arrived yet, and so she was dead bored. “Standing in line is a waste of time,” She thought to herself, sighing as she watched the foolish girl in front of her talk excitedly about the party she had been at last night. The line was moving further and further inside without them. Finally Aya spoke up. “Are you going to move forward or do I need to go around you?!” The girl shot Aya an evil glare then walked inside. Aya just laughed and followed her in.

“That was an interesting way of getting peoples attention,” An educated voice said from behind the table. Aya looked over and saw someone she had never seen before. He looked like a new teacher. His hair was red with grey streaks down the sides. However, he did not look old enough to have grey hair. His deep black pools that were eyes looked at her very seriously.

Aya jumped a little inside, and then grinned. “I figure it doesn’t matter how rude I am because they all envy me anyway.” She laughed at what she said, thinking how in a way it was true.

The teacher smiled slightly. It was a darker smile, seeming almost to hide something. “Viciousness isn’t as effective as slyness, Miss Aya,” He said, handing her a packet and moving her along in line.

Aya was startled. How had he known her name? She didn’t have anything on that said it. Thinking of this disturbing coincidence, she walked through the line, collecting papers along the way. At the last station, someone said, “Hello there Aya, dazing off so soon?” Aya looked over and grinned. It was Mr. Altair, her extremely strange math teacher. “I hope you haven’t forgotten all of your math over the summer. You need to be fresh for Calculus 2,” He said humorously.

Aya laughed. “I haven’t forgotten a cent of any of it,” she said, snapping. “In fact I’ve done absolutely nothing over the summer to remember anything, yet I can still tell you pi to the 6th decimal place. Now can I see my schedule?”

Mr. Altair smiled. “What, so you can brag to the school about being the only junior crazy enough to take Calculus 2?” He passed it to her. “Be my guest!”

Aya took the slip of paper. “Oh, Mr. Altair? Who is that at the doorway? I’ve never seen him before.”

“What? I guess you have lost a bit of your mind over summer. Don’t you know Mr. Suminshire? He’s been teaching here for a long time.”

“Oh… I guess I just wasn’t paying attention before. Thanks Mr. Altair,” Aya said, walking to the exit, thinking how there was definitely something wrong with him because she knew who all the teachers were and there never had been a “Suminshire” among them. “Oh well,” she thought aloud, “It’s not like I’ll ever see him again.”

“Excuse me, but who will you never see again?” Aya turned around and saw a strange lady. She was ghostly pale, with shiny black hair and crystal blue eyes. Once again someone I’ve never seen before, Aya thought.

“Oh, I’m sorry Miss; I was just talking to myself.” Aya responded as politely as possible. The lady gave off a certain aura that demanded fear and respect.

“Oh, excuse me. I was just curious because I am looking for a certain person who escaped me. What is your name, dear?”

“Oh… I’m Aya, Aya Suntail. If the person you are looking for is tall with red hair, then yes, he’s in there.”

“Oh, that would be him. Thank you dear!” The lady said. A small smile appeared on her face.

“I was certain that he didn’t belong there. For some reason my teacher thought the man had been teaching here for years, but obviously he was covering up for him. I new I had never seen him before!” Aya laughed a little.

The lady gave her a funny look. “Well, it’s good that you recognized that. You have certainly saved me some time. What was your name again?”

“Aya Suntail.”

“Thank you, Miss Suntail. I’m sure we will meet again in the future.” And with that the mysterious lady walked off into the building. Aya sighed in relief as soon as she disappeared, her strange aura with her. That was the second strange person she had met today!!! Why were such weird people appearing suddenly at the school, and all in one day? Aya walked as quickly away as she could, not wanting to deal with anymore strangeties.

After she finished up, she got in her car and drove to dance practice. The practice today required complete concentration, and so Aya’s mind was kept busy. After practice, when it was getting dark, Aya said goodbye to her dance partner and walked over to her car, pulling out her keys. Only- in place of the car was an empty parking space!!! She looked back to her studio. Everyone was already gone. Cursing, she crammed her keys into her purse and set off walking to her home. It would only be a half hour, she thought mournfully. Maybe if she cut through the park and ran she would be home quicker. With that she sprinted, toes lightly touching the ground as she went down the street.

A very eerie feeling crawled over Aya as soon as she approached the park. The park was more like a small thick wood, with eucalyptus trees sprouting everywhere, their ghostly white limbs contrasting the deep green of the foliage that hid the earth below. Anyone could hide in there and never be seen, Aya thought. The idea didn’t comfort her at all. Still, she had to go through there to get home as soon as possible. At least the moon was full, covering everything in its silent light. She began a cautious walk down the trail.

The silence of this night disturbed her; there were no crickets, no rustling of small night creatures, only her feet tapping lightly on the trail. She looked around nervously, feeling a slight pressure in her head that made her edgy. The pressure grew heavier and heavier until-

“Hello Miss Suntail. How pleasant it is to meet you again,” A voice said behind her. Aya jumped inside, but managed to keep enough control over herself not to show it. She knew instinctively it was the lady she had met earlier that day.

Turning slowly, Aya said, as calmly as she could, “Hello Miss. I never imagined running into you again, especially so late at night.” The lady looked different. Though she physically appeared the same, the aura that Aya had felt around her earlier was gone, replaced by a cold chill that froze the nerves.

The lady gave a cold smile that made Aya shiver. “Yes, it is a rather strange coincidence, is it not?” Aya felt instinctively that it wasn’t. “I suppose I should accompany you.”

“I’m fine by myself, Miss. I was actually going to start running again, now that I have caught my breath.”

“Oh no, my dear, I must insist. You must accompany me to my home, I’m terribly afraid at night.” The coldness increased, making Aya’s hair stand on end.

“I’m sorry to say this Miss, but I absolutely refuse to accompany you anywhere,” Aya spoke frankly. She gripped her hands into fists, and bent one knee slightly, prepared to make an escape.

“Oh, but we could discuss how you knew dear Mr. Suminshire had never been to your school before, or your mysterious dreams, my dear Xanea.” The lady reached out to her, her smile suddenly becoming more demanding then cold. “Don’t you want to know who you really are?”

At this Aya screamed. “Stay away from me!!!” She cried, jumping into the air, swiftly kicking at the lady and spinning so that when she hit the ground, she sprung and sprinted.

The lady dodged, shocked that the girl had resisted her. “So that’s the way it is,” she snickered. She faded into the shadows.

Aya ran and ran, never looking back. Every nerve was on fire, every fiber in her body screamed for help. After a few minutes she was gasping for air, desperately forcing herself away from the freezing aura she had sensed around the lady. A bit longer and her site started disappearing, so she turned into the woods, hoping to find a thick bush to hide in until the danger she sensed chasing her had passed. Finally she tripped on a root and fell, slamming her head into a ghostly tree. Lights flashed before her eyes. She felt her consciousness disappearing. Mindlessly she crawled into a bush that grew within the tree’s roots, curled up, and screamed hopelessly in her mind for help. An image of a man with black hair and violent red eyes blew across her mind, then all her energy disappeared and darkness overtook her.

* * *

Leon shivered, the hairs on the back of his neck prickling in pleasure as the taste of blood dribbled over his tongue. He held the paling woman’s shoulders, carefully observing her condition so that he could stop his feeding before she collapsed into death. It was pure bliss, he decided, the drinking of blood, the unity of hearts thumping, the taste of life. He caught himself in the rapture of the life giving sustenance, purely delighted.

Then a blindingly shocking pain struck him like lightening, lighting his nerves aflame and stabbing his skull with millions of sharp needles. An image of a girl, yellow eyed and brown haired, bleeding and dying against a ghostly tree, flamed across his eyes. A voice screamed in his ears, crying “Save her!” Leon leapt away from his prey and clenched his head, dropping the poor woman to the cold concrete of the little ally. He jumped into the air, his large black wings catching hold of the air and pumping him upward, while he struggled against the powerful vision, moaning and biting his lip. Finally he couldn’t take it anymore; he shot out like a bullet to the place the force was calling him, single-mindedly determined to do what that pleading voice had begged; Save her!

Within moments he found himself landing in a park, hovering over the beautiful girl in his vision, exactly as she had appeared. Leon knelt down and tenderly lifted her wrist, checking carefully for the pulse so easy for him to find. It was pumping at a normal rate. At this he carefully combed the hair from her face and examined her. What was he going to do? Leaving her there was not an option, even if she was going to be obviously fine the next day. He leaned over her, staring at her smooth face. If she had somehow summoned him with such a powerful force, he thought, then she must have the gift. It would probably be better for her to be taken to that realm then to be returned as a homeless vagabond to this one. At this he sat up, lifted her cautiously into his arms, and gracefully took to the night sky, heading to the realm of Tael.

Chapter 1: The Man in the Black Suit

This story isn’t a happy story. This story isn’t a sad story. This tale is a story made to awaken people to the reality of this world, that not all trees are trees, that not all birds are birds, that not all people are people. That things exist beyond our ability to see, aliens live among us, demons fall in love, animals think with reason, and humans narrow their minds.

It all starts in an older city, decaying with age and technology. It’s a place where businessmen walk the streets with cell phones glued to there ears, street performers make there living, and kid thieves live in private apartments given to them from the good heart of the owners.
Actually, there is only one kid thief that ever managed such a deal. Her name was Kit, a shorter then most orphan who attended a nearby high school. This lucky child had escaped her orphanage at a very young age and had lived on the streets until an old couple had taken her in. They had fed her, clothed her, and given her a shelter that she could stay in. Of course, the apartments were so small that they had given her her own, once in a while coming over and helping and playing with her.

That had been five years ago.

Now Kit was 16, perfectly ignored by the world. Her only key to staying in her apartment was the small amount of cash she “earned” given to the snobby son of the now dead couple. The only people she knew that gave any kind of concern for her were the people at her school. Even there, though, only her two closest friends knew about the sad condition she lived in and how she got by.

Anyway, let us return to the story. Light beams shown through the dusty curtains of the dirty apartment, glowing over the empty boxes stacked up against a wall, topped with a ball of tabby fur. The ball of fur blinked its green eyes, uncurled, and stretched, kneading its claws in the box. It shivered, jumped down, and walked into the small room on the corner, meowing in a fashion so that it sounded more like it was whining. A girl with dark red hair and green eyes was sitting on the bed, pulling socks on her feet. She looked up as the cat walked in and laughed. “I know, Bebop. I’m sorry I can’t give you any attention right now,” she said as the cat came up and rubbed against her leg. “I have some money issues to take care of this morning.” The cat stopped and stared up at her, seeming to complain. “Deal with it,” she said, slipping her foot into her worn out boot. “See you whenever I get home.” With that she got up and walked out of the apartment, ditching the now irritated tabby.

She locked the door and walked down the stairs, thinking of the streets she would hit up before school started. And no, it was NOT prostitution. She was to proud to ever lower herself to that. As she stood at a bus stop, waiting for it to take her to her targets, she finally decided. 31st was always a busy section early in the morning, and always the best place to find unwary targets. But she wanted a challenge this morning. So Kit chose Fleetwood, which was still a crowded street, but the prey was more… well, they were always wary of everyone else. It had to be the business they were in. That fun group the middle class, she thought ruefully as she stepped on the bus.

As soon as she got there she left the bus, pocketing the man whom she had been sitting next to’s wallet. She glanced around, looking for whom she would get to next. She casually strolled down the street, picking pockets with a grace that could never be matched by any but the finest gypsy in Italy. It was almost too boring, she thought sadly. Growing up doing this had wiped all the amusement out of stealing from such easy prey. She had thought she could find a challenge here, but obviously her instincts had failed her for once. Then she saw a man in a blue suit, cautiously holding his hand over his suitcase. He had the look in his eyes of someone who would be difficult to fool. Kit got excited. Her instincts hadn’t failed her.

She broke into a run, looking behind her as if someone was chasing her. She aimed herself so that she would knock the wonderful suitcase out of cautious-man’s hand. When she rammed into him, she slid and fell, successfully causing the case to fly away and the contents to scatter everywhere.

However, she over measured her slide.

Flying forward with continuous momentum, she flew into a guy in a black suit, rolled over, and landed on top of him. He had dark blue hair and cold hazel eyes. His face was smooth and beautiful, definitely the face of someone in their twenties. He seemed the perfect business man, except for the black headphones he had on his head. The guy looked at her, not expressing any shock or pain from the fall or of the girl sitting on top of him. He simply examined her with a cool stare and raised an eyebrow, as if to show he knew what she was up to.

The man in the blue suit was cussing behind her. “What the *^%# were you thinking, stupid &!*^$!” he yelled, coming over to her and picking her up by her shirt. She was so light that even he could pick her easily into the air. “Your going to pay me back somehow, stupid &!*$!,” he said sinisterly in her face, bloodshot eyes bearing into her. Kit new her mistake now. This guy was deffinantly not a good target. He was on something, some sort of drug. What a beginners mistake, she thought, wincing at his bad breath and angry eyes. She curled up as best as possible, knowing that she was done for. Then she heard a voice, cool and dry, come from behind her.

“What are you doing with my girlfriend?” The hand holding her up released immediately at the sound of those words. Kit opened her eyes and looked at the drunk mans scared look. “Well? Come on, speak up. I don’t like waiting for degenerates like you to answer.” Kit turned her head and saw who was talking. It was the guy in the black suit that she had landed on. He was staring coldly at the twitchy man, his hands resting in his pockets. The druggy turned away, mumbling and picking his stuff up as fast as possible. He stuffed it all into the suitcase then walked away urgently, looking back with angry glances.

The man in the black suit stood their, staring after the maddened man for a moment. Then he looked down to Kit and smiled. “You owe me a date,” he said in his dry voice.

“Wha-?” She stuttered, shocked at what she just heard the man say.

“I said you owe me a date.” The blue haired guy stood smiling, watching the shock flow through Kit’s system. After a few seconds, he turned and began to walk away. “I’ll be by your house at 8:30.”

“Huh? H-hey? Wait! I don’t even know you!” Kit shouted, flipping out.

But he was already gone, disappearing into the crowd.

Later that day, Kit sat in class with Mia and Lahina. She stared off into space, her thoughts drifting around about this morning, while Lahina jabbered on about how worthless school is and why she was even here. Mia was studying her math notes; they had a test today.

“Why are you studying Mia? It’s not good for your health, you know,” Lahina said as she snatched away the notes.

“Well, unlike some people, I prefer not to fail school. And I would like to have those back, please,” Mia said calmly and seriously. It was just like her.

“How can you understand all these numbers?” she turned the notebook in every direction, effectively ignoring Mia’s request. “Kit, can you make sense of this?” She shoved the notebook in Kit’s face. Kit didn’t move, but just continued to stare, her eyes all glossed over. “Kit?” Lahina was getting irritated. “KIT!” She yelled in her ear.

“AAH!” Kit fell off her seat and onto the floor. “WHAT THE HELL DID YOU DO THAT FOR?!” She yelled, the hair on the back of her neck standing up like cat’s fur. Lahina dropped the notebook and started laughing.

“What’s up with you, Kit? You never react like that when Lahina does that,” Mia asked quietly as she picked up her notebook.

Kit blushed as soon as Mia asked. Lahina stopped laughing for a second, the looked closely at Kit. Then she fell back laughing again. “Kit has a boyfriend!”

Mia looked at Lahina disapprovingly. “It’s not at all that funny, Lahina.” She turned to Kit. “So, who is it?” She asked, with a small hint of excitement.

“Well…” If it was possible, her face went even redder. “I don’t really know… all I know is he saved my butt this morning, then said he was taking me somewhere at 8:30…”

“And you don’t even know his name?”

“Nope.”

Mia looked thoughtful. “Where is he taking you?” She asked after a short while.

“I have no idea. All I know is that he said he’d be over at 8:30.” Kit replied.

“Hey! Is he hot?” Lahina asked, suddenly snapping out of her fit of laughter and adopting an air of utmost seriousness about her question.

“In my opinion…” Kit thought about it. “Yeah, I guess. I can’t really remember it very well. It went by too fast,” she laughed nervously.

Lahina looked disappointed. She whacked Kit on the backside of the head with such a force that Kit snapped forward. “Pay attention to the important stuff next time!”

“Ow!” Kit rubbed her head in the spot she had been hit. “Fine, fine…miss pain…” She mumbled the last few words incoherently, for she knew Lahina would live up to the name if she heard.

“So, are you going to go?” Lahina asked, adopting a new energy.

“She can’t. She doesn’t even know him!” Mia answered before Kit could say a word. “Besides, he probably doesn’t even know where she lives.”

“You stay out of this, school prep.” Lahina shoved Mia out of her chair and sat down. She turned to Kit, who was getting back in her desk. “So, are you going to go?”

“If he’s there,” Kit responded.

Mia sighed. How foolish they are, she thought. It wasn’t smart to follow some mystery man to a date, in her opinion. Then she frowned. Well, they don’t care for my opinion, so I’m not going to give it. She tuned out Lahina and Kit’s chattering and continued to study.

San Make Tsuki ~ Version Red

Chapter 2: Welcome Home

The rest of the day after school, Kit, Lahina, and Mia hung out with each other at the Blue Axis Mall. Kit and Lahina were heaven, jumping from clothes store to video store to clothes store, while Mia followed slowly behind, trying to find an easy way out. Mia had always hated shopping, especially at that mall.

Around 8:30, everyone split up and went home. In about 15 minutes, Kit was at her front door, completely having forgotten the morning’s events. Thinking about going in, getting in her pajamas and watching some cable TV she was ripping off the snob son next door, she pulled out her key, opened the door, and stood in shock. The man in the black suite, the one she “owed a date,” was sitting on her couch with the TV on, sleeping. A million different thoughts and emotions crashed over her, overwhelming her. She dropped her stuff, carefully close the door, then sat on the floor, panicking.

Her first reaction had been shock that he was there, in the apartment, on her couch. Then she felt angry at him, for daring to invade her home. Then curiosity and fear overcame that, for he shouldn’t have even known where she lived. Then happiness, for some reason, emerged. All of these feelings, happiness, anger, curiosity, and fear, got her so frustrated she screamed out.

“Hm?” The guy opened and eye and yawned. He turned his head and looked at her. “Oh, you’re home. Ready to go?” Fox’s heart skipped a beat. He acted so normal for such an awkward moment.

“How? …di-did you…?” Kit stuttered. She felt strange and stupid, sitting on the floor next to the door the way she was.

He smiled understandingly. “I’ll tell you, don’t worry. Here.” He helped the confused Kit to her feet. She floated up surreally, feeling as if she wasn’t herself.

He thought about how much he should tell her. About how he had been watching over her since she was four? How he knew everything about her, more then she knew about herself? How he had always been her guardian, chosen to protect her over all others? Why he did what he did? How he knew all of this?I sound like a stalker, he thought ironically.

Finally he just decided to tell her it all when they got where they needed to go. Taking her over to the couch and helping her sit, he began to speak. “My name is Spike,” he began. Kit had begun to recover, and spoke the first thing that popped into her mind.

“That’s great, you have a name.” She said irritated. “HOW THE HELL DO YOU KNOW WHERE I LIVE?! Are you some kind of stalker or something?!” she half yelled and half asked.

Spike only laughed. It was a dry and sarcastic laugh, just like his voice. “I love women that are so straight to the point.” He looked straight into her eyes and smiled sarcastically, making Kit blush. “All you need to know is that I’m no threat, Kit.”

Kit seemed freaked out by this statement. “How do you know my name?”

“Forget about it. Come now, the more time we spend talking the less time there is for the party!”

“What party?”

“You’ll see,” he said, getting up and stretching. “Come on, let’s go.”

Kit got up, feeling out of her mind. There must be something wrong with her, she thought wryly, to be willing to follow a 20 year old stranger to some party. Mia was right. But for some reason, she felt she could trust this guy. There was something familiar about him, something that rang the bell of a far off memory. But it was too foggy. She knew she could trust him anyway, though.

She followed him to the door then outside to the overhang with the staircase. There he paused, stretching his arms every which way and staring out at the sky. “Are you ready for it to begin?” He asked, seeming almost sad.

This confused Kit a little. Ready for what to begin? Some stupid date? What a stupid question. “Yeah,” She responded.

Spike looked solemnly over his shoulder at her, and then turned again to face the sky. “Then prepare yourself,” He said, fanning out his arms slowly.

It was the most beautiful, strange thing Kit had ever seen. As he fanned his arms, the black suit seemed to ripple on his back, then bulge. Suddenly bursting through the cloth, giant wings bloomed from his back, stretching a giant 15 feet in each direction. The silky black and red feathers shimmered from a nonexistent light, making his wings look as if they were covered in bloody slashes. He looked straight up, and Kit could see the black horns that had grown from the sides of his head. He removed the stupid headphones he had been wearing, revealing his pointed ears. Then he jumped up onto the railing and leapt off into the air, turning to face her.

Kit was absolutely stunned. What was he? Was he an angel? A demon? A… a… definitely nonhuman? She walked to the railing and held out her hand. He simply smiled his smile and reached his hand out to her.
It was all too much for her mind. A unnatural scream screeched in her head from behind the fog banks.

She fell forward as darkness swallowed her.

Chapter 3: The Red Slash in the Sky

Spike leapt forward, grabbing Fox’s waist as she fell. He flew up onto the roof, landed, then lay Kit down and examined her carefully. After a few moments, he sighed in relief. She had only blacked out. He stood and looked over the city and sighed again. He had been planning on taking Kit back to her time, but he knew he couldn’t. Not in this condition. From her reactions to seeing his demon form, he could tell the damn drug that blocked her memories, her features, and her powers was still working on her. It made him slightly depressed. She still couldn’t remember him. Of course, that was part of the deal, but still. What an unfair clause to the contract.

He looked down to her again. “Drasnia was so looking forward to seeing you…” He spoke to the unconscious girl. “Oh, well. Your mother will have to wait for a different day. And who knows. Maybe there is another way to get you there. Maybe it’s better this way.” A plan clicked in place. “Yes, it’s much better,” he said, suddenly smiling dryly. “Congrats, my dear Fox. This was your last day of school. I hope you enjoyed it. Welcome to reality. You and your friends will be in for a rude awakening.” He smiled in spite of himself. It wasn’t going to be nice, and he had to ok it with Drasnia. Still, he might as well begin now. It would be fine if he at least set the stage now, right?

He picked Kit up delicately, making sure she would be protected from the wind, then opened his wings and swooped off the roof.

* * *

Kit’s eyes fluttered open, close, open, close. She felt arms holding her close, making her warm, cozy. Kit half opened her eyes, and saw Spike looking ahead, not noticing her returning to conscience. She closed her eyes and slightly turned her head, then opened her eyes halfway again, trying to keep her tentative consciousness. She saw the city skyline, lights, cars, and people buzzing around in the technological metropolis below. The sight made her dizzy, and she moaned and fell back to unconsciousness.

* * *

Spike was at complete harmony within himself and the world the city was. The sounds and beauty of this technologically and culturally advanced city never seized to amaze him from this height. It wasn’t like his home city, which, though beautiful in its own way, wasn’t nearly as futuristic. He laughed in his mind at that term. Yes, not nearly as futuristic. Ho ironically perfect a statement. Kit then moaned in his arms, knocking him back to the time and place he was. He scanned the city for “Lahina’s” house, imagining the map of the city in his mind. Spotting the street with his amazing vision, he dove, folding in his wings and using them to guide his decent. He was sure to go as sleek and smooth as possible, for he didn’t want to hurt Fox. Opening his wings at the last second, he caught himself and landed lightly on his feet, Fox still curled in his arms. He walked to Lahina’s address, as silent as the light spring breeze, and laid Fox gently against the door. He knocked, kissed Fox lightly on the forehead, then flew away, leaving her to the care of her friends.

* * *

Kit had once again been struggling to her consciousness when they had landed. She felt herself gently laid down, soft objects brushing her face like the wind. Then there was a knocking, and she felt soft lips lightly brush her forehead. When she opened her eyes, she swore she saw Spike flying away.

Then something creaked open behind her and she fell backwards. “Oww…” Kit moaned. Pain suddenly rushed over her; her back stiffened, her head fogged up, and there was a throbbing ache on the back of her head. She looked up and saw Lahina staring down at her.

“Whoa, you ok?” Lahina asked as she pulled Kit to her feet. She was still wearing the clothes she had been wearing earlier that day.

“Fine, fine…” Kit attempted to straighten, but the slightest pressure shot a sharp sting up her spine. “Ow!”

Someone sighed from the far wall. “One second, I’ll be right there.” It was Mia. She walked over and calmly hit Kit’s back hard.

“AAAH!” Kit yelled as her back snapped in hundreds of points along her spine.

“Shut it, Kit,” Mia said bluntly. “It should be fine now.”

Kit bent backwards, then turned and twisted. “Hey…” Kit said brightly, “its better!” Then she started jumping up and down, chanting, “Its better! It’s better! It’s better!”

Mia scowled. “Isn’t that what I just said?”

“It’s better! It’s better! It’s better!”

Lahina and Mia shook their heads in disbelief at Kit. “What are you doing here, Kit?” Mia asked.

“It’s better! It’s better! It’s bet… huh?” Kit, instead of turning around like a normal person, bent backward to look at the two, bending almost in half. “I don’t know! What are you doing here?”

“Mia’s here because she walked home with me, you mental idiot!” Lahina clenched her fists, her face reddening. All signs to that she was about to get frightening. “Why the hell ARE YOU HERE?”

Kit straightened and responded in a much more serious tone. “I really have no clue! The last thing I remember was Spike… and giant black and red wings… and the next thing I knew I was against your door, watching the red slash fly away…black and red feathers…” Kit’s words slowly faded, and she seemed somewhat stressed.

Lahina’s eyebrows were raised in confusion. Then she became determined. “Where did they go?”

Kit wasn’t paying attention anymore. She had discovered a roll of duck tape. “Umm… up?” she answered offhandedly. Lahina went outside, and the duck tape mysteriously disappeared from the table.

Lahina turned back to Kit and Mia, grabbing their arms and yanking them outside. “See that?” she pointed to a red slash in the sky, seeming to shrink by the minute.

“Sure, Lahina.” Mia studied her carefully. “Are you going as mental as Kit?”

“I’m fine, thanks. I’m not sure about you though, Mia. You look as if you’re in pain,” Lahina responded sweetly.

Mia looked confused. “Huh? I’m not-“ She broke off in mid sentence as Lahina’s fist made contact with her arm.

“HOW COULD YOU ACCUSE ME OF BEING AS MENTAL AS HER? YOU PREPPY-“ Lahina stopped as she felt Kit poke her arm determinedly. “WHAT DO YOU WANT, YOU-“

“It’s getting away,” Kit said, ignoring the fact she had broken in when Lahina had a good rampage going. She pointed at the slash, which was moving towards a set of abandoned buildings in the nearby old part of town.

“…” Lahina was caught between two automatic urges. On one hand she wanted to finish yelling at the two for interrupting her “speech,” but she also wanted to chase the high flying object that seemed to have chosen a landing spot. Finally she chose the latter, for she swore it was more visible now, and it looked like a person with wings. It pricked at her sense of reality. She ran after it, dragging along Kit and Mia, ignoring the growing tingling sensation on the sides of her head.

Spike soared towards the arch, planning on his visit with Drasnia, the nine-tail-demon-fox. He was sure she would want to know her daughter was going to come home in a few days, her powers fully awakened. Little did he realize that he was leading the three girls to their true home, their true life.

San Make Tsuki~Version Red

Chapter 4: Through the Arch to Nowhere (incomplete)

Darkness stuck to the cobwebs and broken beams of the old building, crawling into the hearts of the three girls as they came to a stop. Kit glanced nervously around, expecting something to leap out and grab her. Mia was stoically attempting to ignore the impending feeling of fear. She stared straight ahead, refusing to look around at the spiders and rats that nestled in the ruins.

Lahina, however, was completely ignorant of the strange aura. Swiping aside a cobweb that hung off of her head, she thought about the weird person with the weird wings. What the hell was that about, she wondered. But she couldn’t think to hard on it, or her ears would start to itch and her temples to hurt.

“Aaah!” Kit yelped. There was a squeak, then a scurrying sound. Kit puffed up and gritted her teeth. “Stupid rat, I’ll kill you!” She declared, chasing the skittering creature into the other room.

Lahina swore under her breath then chased after Kit, ducking under beams that only someone not nearly as tall as her could get through. Mia stood there for a moment, then followed after them, not really wanting to be left alone in the creepiness by herself.

Kit followed the sound of the rat, leaping and ducking over and under broken chairs, dusty tables, and scraps of wood. Finally the rat leaped through a hole, and Kit crashed behind it into the wall, blowing a new layer of dust all over the room, frightening the small residents away. The wall creaked and snapped at the pressure, making small holes.

Lahina and Mia rushed in, watching the entire spectacle. Kit leaned back, slightly in shock. She examined the wall, and saw a hole big enough to stick a leg through where her head had collided with the wall. She moved into a crouch and looked through. On the other side was a dark room, completely void of any objects, Completely exposed to the night sky. A giant Roman Arch stood in the middle of the room, towering overhead, even from this distance. Kit’s eyes widened. “I think we’ve found something interesting,” she whispered to the two behind her. Without waiting for a response, she grabbed a wooden leg from a nearby chair and began hitting the wall along the small holes. After a few good swings, cracks started appearing, showing the walls weak resistance. Lahina took the rest of the chair and swung it hard, causing the wall, with a final moan of resistance, to fall in and crash on the floor in the Arch room. Kit dropped the leg and walked through, coughing at the dust that had flown up.

Mia stood back, watching the two silently as they walked into the room. She couldn’t help but feel they shouldn’t be there. Something was wrong about this. She walked in, and looked around, noticing right away the lack of dust and webs. The room was abnormally clean, especially considering there was no ceiling. It was all so illogical. The floor, a cool cobalt tile, glimmered from the giant moon casting an eerie blue haze over everything.
