Winnipeg police say they picked up an 11-, 12-, 13- and two 14-year-old girls following a mugging in Garden City. The victims were two girls walking in the 2100 block of McPhillips Street shortly after 6 p.m. Saturday, who say the quintet assaulted them and tried to steal their belongings.
After leaving the area, the suspects went to a nearby supermarket and allegedly tried to shoplift several items before they were apprehended by security.
The 11-year-old is too young to be charged under the Criminal Youth Justice Act, and was likely cautioned by police before being released.
It was the first of two violent incidents being blamed on young people over the weekend.
MAN ATTACKED
Police say a group of up to six males attacked a 23-year-old man about 4 a.m. yesterday, as he was about to enter his home in the 500 block of Elgin Avenue.
They attackers searched the victim's pocket and, finding nothing, pushed him down a staircase, inflicting minor injuries. One of the youths allegedly wielded a handgun, police said, before fleeing the scene.
The motive is unclear. And despite searching for suspects, officers have no description of any of them.
Sgt. Kelly Dennison, a spokesman for Winnipeg police, said it's a "good question" as to how cops will track down the alleged attackers without knowing how big they are, how old they are and what they wore.
It's also uncertain why the victim wasn't able to better describe any of the group.
"We're hoping that maybe when he sleeps on it, his memory will get better and we'll get a description," Dennison told the Winnipeg Sun.
