Excluding the castle towers, the attic is the highest point in the castle, and is in complete disarray. Random junk lies all around, and no order takes this place. Yes, it could be taken over, but no one ever goes to the attic. There's not much there of interest.

One of the windows in the attic had come open and, in the fierce wind that encircled the higher levels of the castle, flapped open and closed with a loud snapping sound that disturbed the stillness of the attic. Not that anyone would normally care...it was the attic, after all. Who in their right mind would--slam!

Silence. Stillness. And then a rustling sound as something moved, then stopped. Its name was Aguel, and currently it had a bit of a problem: he had moved to the full length of the strings binding his puppet body to the controller. Not a problem for a normal puppet, but this was not a normal circumstance. His strings did not belong to him at the moment.

Again he stretched, testing the length. He had spotted a book that held his interest and wanted desperately to have it. But he was at the greatest length he could achieve, and the strings tugged at him as he strained again. He sighed, and looked in the direction his strings led. Well, he thought to himself, it's better than doing nothing.

"Hsst! Hey, wake up! I see something I want. I'll let you have part of it if you'll move this way a bit."

He waited in silence for the answer. It wasn't that he really wanted to speak to her, and after all they weren't on very good terms anyway, what with her taking control of his strings and all. But still, that book looked so good, especially since it was just out of reach.

Juliette was laying on the couch sleeping, if a spirit can sleep that is. Then she heard the little creature start making a fuss again. Sighing, the spirit slowly got off of the couch and started over. As she did, she reached into a pocket and pulled out a few strings and tugged them, making sure the little creature couldn't do anything without her approval.
"What is it, Aguel?" Juliette ask the puppet in an annoyed tone.
From the way that she said the creature's name, one could tell that they were not on good terms. The way she had said it there was an air of contempt, or distaste in her voice. As if she looked down on the creature.
Juliette really did look down on the creature, even when she decided to 'walk' instead of floating off the ground. In life, she had been a tall girl, with thick raven hair and pale skin. As this new being, this otherworldly spirit, she was still tall, but her raven hair had become a blueish color and her skin had turned completely white. She was also semi-transparent, not fully there or gone, but somewhere in the middle.
Hey fierce golden eyes had changed color, as had her clothing. Everything about her now supported the white and blue coloring, in various shades. Still she maintained almost the same presence that she had had. She still wore her tight leather pants that fit her curves in a way that made men think improper thoughts, as well as her long sleeved linen shirt. Over the linen shirt she wore a corset, which restrained her considerable breasts and had been turned dark blue, like her pants. Her hair had been tied back with a strand of leather. She still cursed herself for not wearing her cape, which she intended to find before anyone stole it.
Juliette looked around the part of the attic the Animated had managed to find. She saw the leather bound book immediately, and walked over. She looked at it, then smiled. It was large, with silver outlining the edges of the leather cover. On the front it had a strange but beautiful symbol on it.
Juliette let out a breath, then reached a hand down to unhook the clasp and open it. Unfortunately, her hand slipped through. Blast this confounded form!, she thought, I'll have to rely on the doll for this...
"Aguel! Come unstrap this book and open it!" Juliette commanded, jerking the strings that she still held.

The bells on Aguel's collar rattled as he was yanked over to the book.

"Don't pull so hard! You'll tear my clothes."

The puppet felt a strange sensation as his cuffs brushed against the book and his hands began working to open the latch.

"Fine, fine. I wanted to open it anyway."

It wasn't like he'd done anything to her. She wasn't lacking sleep--spirits didn't have to sleep! It was no credit to her that she'd gotten ahold of his strings before he became aware of himself. Aware of the change...

That was the feeling, he thought to himself, that's the thing this book's making me feel. That feeling I get when I think, I wasn't always like this.

But he couldn't pinpoint what was different. His clothes seemed familiar, the black and red sinew patterns tracing around the eccentric frills of his shirt, his mostly black pants that on the right leg was all red below the knee. Even the collar around his neck with the detuned sounding bells, even that had been there before. But strings? Something about that was odd.

"You know," he said, still struggleing with the latch, "I know someone who's way nicer to her subordinates, and--"

The book flew open and he became quite silent.

Juliette looked intently over the puppet. He was only around four feet, give or take, so it was easy enough.
The writing looked relatively fresh, and as Juliette read it, she became aware that this book was very much enchanted. It told of a wizard, who had cursed the castle, then been trapped away. He wanted out, and was willing to grant anyone who found this book and helped him do so, as well as anyone that helped them, anything they wished.
"This, Aguel. This is something we should keep. Make sure there is nothing else in it, would you?" Juliette whispered.
Juliette thought for a moment. What would she want back? Her body, of course. And what else? She knew that she had been alive before this. She wanted to remember what it was like. What had her life been like? Who was she?
A sudden flash came back to Juliette. It was nothing long, just a sliver of a memory. She was in a carriage, on her way to a foreign country. She was going to get a disobedient underling, and she was not happy about it.
"Was it you?" She whispered, fondling Aguel's puppet strings, "Aguel...I don't know about you, but I do not think I am from here...I think I came here to get someone."

Aguel twitched uneasily as the strings commanded him to make movements that weren't exactly decided on.

"Y-ow! Stop it, stop. it. I don't know. I--seriously! Don't do that! I'll hold the damn book, I've got it, see?"

He closed the book quickly and held it close to himself while shutting his eyes tightly. If only someone nicer had gotten ahold of his strings. Or no one at all. That would be good too, he thought. But if it were someone, then it would be like...someone who was always, and then the words hopped out.

"She was always kind to me."

She who? But he didn't know.

Juliette looked over at Aguel, then cocked her head.
"Who was, you silly little puppet?," Juliette ask.
The girl then tucked the strings away and lifted herself a few feet into the air. She then started floating towards the direction that she assumed to be the exit of the attic. At one point, she floated midway through a table, then stopped and turned to face the Animated.
"Come on, Aguel. Bring that book and let's go retrieve my cloak," Juliette called.
She then continued on, not at all worried about whether the puppet would follow. After she wandered far enough away, he would have to. She did have his strings, after all.
Juliette wasn't quite sure how she'd obtained Aguel's strings. When she'd become aware of herself again and gotten up off of the Attic's floor, she'd found them in her hand. She didn't recall anything before that that would have placed them there. At first she was just going to throw them down. And then she'd seen Aguel, who seemed quite concerned that she had them. This obviously meant they were important, and that she should keep them. Only later had she found out how useful they truly were.

The problem with Juliette being haphazard about Aguel following her was that it was exactly that: haphazard. She could pass through objects. He could not. And though he tried to keep up with her, she could float faster than his puppet legs could move. And so came the inevitable moment where the strings reached their limit and he was dragged in a straight line after her whether he liked it or not.

And through whatever happened to be in the way. A chair, a mirror, a door ("At least stop so I can open it!"), down stairs, up stairs, and any other manner of things.

"Tell me before you do that, please!" he called after her, "It's not so bad to give me a head start, right?"

[Aguel suffers minor damage to health on account of being dragged through various objects]
[Juliette and Aguel leave the Attic. The Attic is empty]
