I've heard a lot of people complaining about Valentine's Day recently. The most common complaint I've heard is "Valentine's Day was created by Hallmark so they could get a crap load of money."
What's my response to this? "At least it's not Kill Your Neighbor Day."

It could be a lot worse. If Hallmark has the power to create a holiday that ranks as one of the top five candy selling holidays, I'm pretty glad it celebrates love.

Was Valentine's Day made into a big deal by the card and candy companies?
Do you mind if it was?

Are you celebrating this year?

I completely agree with you! I've been saying the same thing for a little while now. I know a lot of people who are like "OMGZ VALENTINEZ DAY SUX ITZ JUS FOR DA MONIEZZZ", and to state it quite simple it annoys the crap outta me.

Look at Christmas. It's not even about Jesus or anything anymore. You never hear someone saying OMGZ I HATEZ CHRISTMAS. Hell, I'm not even Christian and I celebrate Christmas.

Most people who complain about it are only trying to seem smart. It sounds harsh, but it seems more and more apparent to me when I hear someone complaining. They're bitter and trying to seem superior most of the time.

This is going to be my first real Valentines Day spent with someone. I'm very happy, but I was never unhappy spending it alone. I've always loved the holiday, it's a great reason to be extra nice to everyone. Love doesn't need to be celebrated only if it's romantic! I always make cards (see? I make them! Hallmark ain't makin' no cashmoney on me!) for my friends and my mother. People don't realize how appreciated these kind of gestures are...I made a few people cry with my cute little notes in the cards.

Everything is taken by corporations to make money, but so what? Money is just money. People who are above that superficial nonsense shouldn't give a crap anyways. Let them be greedy. If people really cared that much about commercialism, they'd stop celebrating their birthdays and all holidays. It's damned hypocrisy, I say.

And it wasn't a holiday created by Hallmark, it's celebrating an actual historic event. And we should be thankful just being able to celebrate the holiday! In Saudi Arabia it's been OUTLAWED because it's "western culture".

Valentine's Day isn't for money or couples. It's for anyone who loves anyone in any type of way.

Exactly!! It's about celebrating love for whoever...friends, parents, siblings, grandparents. So don't buy a Hallmark card, you know? Make your own, make cookies for people. I agree about the complaining people. Don't like it, then don't celebrate.

Wow, you two are the first people I've found who agree xd Maybe I'm not looking hard enough or have difficult friends, I don't know.

I made all of my cards and stuff this year because it's too hard finding cards that fit everyone. I did get some Cookie Monster cards I saw gonk They were cute. I didn't even pass them out. I just wanted them xD

Personally, I love Valentines Day. I don't know about anyone else, but I love seeing everyone all happy and being cute with their partner. It really brings a smile to my face.

I do kind of miss the days of elementary gift-giving, where everyone broughtin cheap comic cards for their classmates, and the teachers handed out little boxes of SweetHarts. Also I haven't had the fortune to spend a Valentines with anyone yet, but here's hope for the future.

And you know what's really silly? "Valentines was created by candy companies for MONEY!" Well, Halloween sure as hell sells more candy. Every year we have to get more on Halloween becasue we run out. And Halloween is never accused of being a money gimmick-- most people know about All Hallows Eve, and All Hallows Day, and make the connection (Hallows Eve, Hallowe'en...?).

So.... happy roses and love day, everyone. And Happy Chinese New Year, too-- the Year of the Pig!

I don't think it was created by Hallmark, but it'd probably be a great opportunity to make money, like Halloween. Maybe I should start selling roses and boxes of chocolate... which sell way more than cards, anyway.

Always the buisnesswoman in me... *sigh* Well, money is money. Anyone wanna buy something?

I dunno. I can see what you're saying, but I do think the holiday was generally publicized for the sake of making money, and I do have a problem with greedy corporations only because they send lobbyists into the government who basically pay legislators to write laws that allow them more money at the expense of a large population of people in poverty. I also don't tend to like holidays that do highlight the difference between the wealthy and the not-so-well-off. It's really hard on kids who can't afford roses or cards, and I'm glad other people enjoy it, but it's just not really my cup of tea. I'm just not really a romantic person anyway. Last year my boyfriend-at-the-time and I literally did nothing for V-day, and all his friends were kind of like "why didn't you get her a rose or something?" to which he answered that it's just not the way our relationship worked.

Either way, looks like this year I'm celebrating Singles Awareness Day anyway. xD

What I think is really strange is that in Spanish (which is based almost completely on Latin), "Vale" (from valer, "to value, to be worth") means "it values," and the suffix "tin" means "Very small" (and without affectionate connotations, such as the suffix "ito" or even "illo.")
So would "Valentine's" mean "It values little" or "It has little value?" Conjecture, conjecture...
Interesting... Wasn't the holiday named after a Saint?

Yeh, I personally think you should just celebrate holidays how you like, not complain about them. Hey, corporations are making money off of it. So what? Just enjoy the spirit.

I, however, think "Kill Your Neighbor" day sounds fun...xD
anyway....Happy Valentine's day, y'all!
Hm, I know I took a while to post this...but i wanted to post it on V-day....
