Hey, everyone. I realize it's been...okay, I've never actually posted here before, dispite my membership for quite some time. Cut me some slack, though; I only recently even started going to the ED again, and within one day very nearly fell back out. But, I stuck through it, and I guess I'm glad I did.

Anyway, as the topic title suggests, spam threads do not bother me. I may be bothered(or amused) by the person who has nothing better to do than create an account on a site just so that they can find the one forum where the most people will be annoyed and fill it with what they know will annoy them. But, the thread itself is not so much a problem for me. We all know it is impossible to stop these threads before they come. Gaia doesn't have some magic robot that scans every person who clicks on the ED icon to decide whether or not they are going to try and put up a spam topic, so these things are going to show up. It's their life that annoys me.

People put post after post in these threads that are obviously spam threads. Because I like lists, I have come up with the general categories for such posts:
1. The Warning-This one is pretty obvious. It's always the first post to show up, telling them that they are spamming and/or being retarded. Often times, the Warning will include an image of the report that the poster filed for the topic, letting the spammer know they "mean business".
2. The Congratulations-Almost every other post after the Warning is this. They either congratulate the Warning for their clever jab at the spammer(with, I might add, the sense that you can actually hear a dry chuckle going along with it), and sometimes even slide their own joke in at the end. Basically, this boils down to A) agreeing with the Warning and B) trying to fit in the joke the person was planning on using as their own warning, but weren't typing fast enough to accomplish.
3. The Repeat-The other half of the posts after the Warning are, essentially, the Warning. They do the exact same thing, it's just already been said at least once, as if they had some sort of laser-targetted sight that only allowed them to see their post and the original spammer's post.

Really, the biggest problem I have with these threads is how people let themselves get sucked into them. Just report, and move on, as the saying goes. It's just like rats; they're going to find a way into your house one way or another, but you have the opportunity to just skip the attempt at overfeeding them to the point of death and instead just give them a good crack to the skull.

EDIT: Now that I think back, I suppose there can be some merit to the Warning. The spammer might really just be clueless, and giving them the hint that they are in the wrong place could mean the difference between seeing them again there or not. However, there are few people who would use this type of Warning, and even fewer spam thread creators who really are just confused.

I don't think there's any merit at all to the warning. I think that the warning could easily be issued to the OP in the forum of a PM.

When I a warning is sent to the OP via PM they learn that their post was in the wrong place, why the post was reported, how they could make the thread more ED worthy, where the thread belongs, etc., and the spam thread isn't bumped up.

When spam threads are bumped up, that seems to give them more attention than they deserve, so no posts should be made in spam threads. They should be reported and ignored, therefore, when someone feels the need to warn or educate the spammer, that person should do it via PM.

I am also bothered by the spam thread in general, not because I expect Gaia to scan to see if a thread is spam or not, but because I expect the spammer to read and respect the ED rules. People who do not respect the feelings of others, those feelings being that one should make threads that are ED worthy, bother me to an extent. I am just bothered by the carelessness of these people.

But, I will say that I am more bothered by people who respond to the threads. The people who respond to these threads are just as bad as the spammer because, like the spammer, they obviously have not read, or do not respect, the ED rules, and thus, they post on threads that don't beong even when the ED rules say not to. These people seem to want ED to better, and seem to want people to follow the ED rules, yet they contribute to the downfall of the ED and do not follow the ED rules themselves. It boggles my mind.

It's an irritation that I wish to stop by education. The people who respond to these threads, I believe, can be reformed. I think they can be reformed because by issuing a warning, they are showing a want for the ED to be better, so if they were shown that they are simultaneously making the ED worse, they'd stop their behavior. I think these people should also be issued a PM about their behavior, and I think we as a guild could be more hands on with this issue.

I don't like to bump a spam thread to the top. I just report, report, report, and the job is done.

You guys in this guild are already doing a pretty good job, though. Most of the time I try to report, one has already been submitted.

I agree with Sound Doctrine completely. Report, do not respond, do your best to educate. Any post in a spam thread is detrimental to the health of ED and has no merit. Its as simple as that. But the threads themselves bother me. The fact that someone would be so dimwitted as to post something like "LOL GVE M GOLD!" in a forum which says right on the label it is for in depth discussion is depressing. That's just me, though.

i try to be discreet in my reports.

everybody makes mistakes; newcomers can be forgiven for placing Life Issues in ED, before they know better.

i usually save my reports for begging, page stretching which seems deliberate, and offensive content.

I must admit it is a nasty habit of mine to respond to spam threads. I am often the one issuing the warning in a condescending post. Sometimes I even get drawn into arguments on the thread with the original poster. It's difficult to resist, especially when the opportunity for a witty joke arises.

Of course the logical side of my brain tells me that I am only contributing to a spam topic by bumping it, but my pride tells me to shout "Everybody STOP posting on this thread... damnit."
