I never asked for this or planned it in advance - I was merely blown here by the winds of chance.
Alright. I live close to Atlanta, and this has been a small issue where I live (don't worry, though, the problem is relatable to everyone).
For those who might not know, Atlanta has a C.D.C (Control Disease Center) in its city limits. What is held there? Let's try... Ebola, Smallpox (one of two places in the world with a smallpox virus (other is in Moscow Russia)), Echoli, Malaria, and many other viruses. For those of you that don't know, those diseases generally require a biohazard suit to go into the rooms that the disease is in (a 'hot zone'). Basically, a level 4 clearance. For those of you that don't know, that's basically the highest level of clearence there is. You have to be highly experienced with diseases for that area.
Now that you have a little bit of a background of the topic, let me present a tad of a debate. So, as many of you know, Atlanta's airport system is a center (like New York). Once a disease enters this system, a virus can travel across the world in a day (Tokyo, Hong Kong, etc... (SARS, anyone?)). So, this is a little unsafe, in my opinion. Another problem is that many, many people live in Atlanta.
Another issue, though, is that you need experienced technicians working on the diseases. In a city like Atlanta, there are such scientists. You might not have such scientists in a less populated area. It would also have less security, because in a large city, there are more security gaurds (and they are also better-trained).
Remember that the diseases and cures for these diseases are studied here, so they do help society.
Yet another side is that the current doctors that work there might be out of work. Is it fair to these doctors?
Discuss:
1. C.D.C - Good?
2. Disease centers - a ticking time bomb in a big city?
3. Would you move the disease center?
4. Any experience with a 'hot zone'?
5. Doctors that work here?
What can I say? I got carried away, and not just by balloons. They called me wonderful.
