...how do you make up for their advantage?

I'm a total beginner in fencing and one of about eight people in my fencing class. It's about an even split between boys and girls, but the instructor makes us rotate so we don't end up fighting the same people all the time. Normally that wouldn't be a problem, but... All the guys are walking skyscrapers! They've got super-long arms and legs, and I often find myself at a disadvantage when I'm fencing them simply because they can extend and lunge farther than I can. It's terribly embarassing when they can simply extend their arm and touch me while I have to lunge in order to cover the same distance.

So... what do you guys do to compensate for things like this? Do you have any tips?

I'm a short, C-rated fencer. The trick is distance. You push them, then break the distance. You continue doing this then force them to make a mistake then you either make a remise, or attack in preparation.

Do the distancing thing, like drake said, but also integrate moves such as passata sottos, inquartatas, and infighting. These may be a little bit advanced for you, but I'm sure if you ask you coach/instructor, he'll be happy to teach you.

i've found that (if epeeist) hit there wrist ever time they lunge or (if foilist) do some thing unexpected or try to get to a posion were they cant hit you very easly (like the duck lunge) or crouching (its legal)

When I fight with my brother, he is one and 1/2 year younger then me, and he is accually longer arms, legs, and just under my height. I find the best way to win is to be fast. Deflect, i wear him down, as my stamina is greater. I get him tired, then use fast, short strokes to make him dizzy. Once he is angry enough, he berserks, just flailing around, and then i 'kill' him.

That also works on old people. I irritate them by always being just out of distance, maybe parry and riposte every now and then. And then once they're starting to wear down, they lunge, and I catch them right in the middle of it. Haha.

it rarely happens to me because i'm tall, but, hitting to the wrist or under the arm tends to work unless they are exceptional at defending that, then you need to take their blade... unless you are a different weapon than epee.

^^;; forgot

i only fence epee right now so that is all i can help you with.

I don't know if you stated it (I forgot) but if you fence sabre here is some tips. I watch my club shorties fight the tallest in the class (I'm on the tall side too) and the way you do it is by being faster. Also try to trick them to putting their arm or wrist out then hit then while their sword missed you.

Also maybe make a moving with ducking or something as far as I know only crossing thou legs are illegal in sabre.

Isn't takeing their blade bad fencing? Cant you get penalized?

I have the same problem! I'm a new fencer and pretty short, like around 5'2''. When ever I fence someone taller than me in my class, which is most everyone else, I just try to be sneaky! whee
I like to command the blade in order to close the distance or disengage riposte. I also "try" infighting. I haven't technically learned any of that yet, but I like to experiment. sweatdrop
PS: I'm a new member and I fence foil. biggrin

Wow, um good luck. Most important thing, dodge, parrying will tire you more. Always dodge if you can, or tilt your blade so your opponents slides off giving you like .5 seconds to slash, stab, jump back or what ever else you can think of.

Not at all, prise de fers (as they are called) are encouraged. Binds are key in epee and useful in foil, but under-utilised in sabre.

I know what you mean smile I'm the shortest one on the ladies team & all the men in my club are giants, too.
I'm no expert, but my coach told me that one way to compensate is to just be aggressive!! Because it's harder for them to hit you if you're closer to them. He made me focus on my beat attacks & compound attacks too - I'm guessing to defend while their freakishly long arms can still hit you biggrin .
Failing that, keep distance, parry-riposte wink

If they're a defensive fencer, typically Feint, advance with a half lunge, let them take your blade and immediately second intention parry riposte works well. however if they're more offensive and youre quick, attacking into preparation as well as closing counterattacks are the way to go.
