Yea, anyone experienced with Insence making? Like making your own cone and stick incense? I know scott cunningham (dun dun duuuuuuuuuuuun) has his book out, but I thikn he advokates using a toxic chemical for the self-ignitingness. So yea... any advice, tips, non-toxic self-igniterers, etc?

I have not made cone or stick incense, but at a Yule ritual a couple years ago one of our activities was to make some loose incense that combined things like fresh cedar, pine needles, and some other things that I can't remember. Then you can just light some charcoal discs beneath the loose incense and that will get the aromas into the air. As far as I know, that's a pretty non-toxic method.

Oh, no, I do do that. ^^ I was wondering if any one knew how to make cone or stick so I dont have to deal with the charcoal... it drives my mum insane to have sparking, sizzling coal in my room. ^^;

Well, I honestly do not know about cones, or stick, but you can always use oils. Those are pretty easy to make, though you need like an odorless oil, and if you're like me and is 16 w/ no money, sometimes you don't have that... *twitch* But you can make oils... that's simple enough, I think.

Unerstanding that the original thread has been linked back to, I will still mention the toxic substance.

It is saltpeter/potassium nitrate/sodium nitrate, and it is used in just about all self-igniting charcoals. It is toxic, and Cunningham did say to use it... but I imagine he did not know better. Please try to avoid it when you can, as the effects will only increase with time.

I use the groud-up bark from the tabu-no-ki tree ("makko powder") from japan as my combusting agent... and it also works to bind the ingredients together. It is non-toxic, and has varying amount of scent to it (higher quality=less scent). However you will need to be sure your ingredients have a strong scent... otherwise what little smell the bark does have, will be brought out.

that's why i prefer to use oil, no smoke and no scent from any combustible agents, and no ash plus i like the candlelight showing through the holes in my burner 3nodding

I use oil and candles because my mate is allergic to smoke.

If you are still interested, I stumbled upon this a while back when looking for information about incense online:
