Today, my BD was out, and the sub conducted. It was horrible like usual because my sub is more lenient on how we play than my BD. I wish Mr. Ring would come back: our next concert next week! And Symphonic Band in the hands of Mr. Phelps... a very scary thought, he has little music experience, and even that cute trombone section leader Daniel Johnson could conduct just as well. He's like the junior maestro (and I kept looking at him from the first row), but Mr. Phelps doesn't let him conduct anymore since Mr. Ring taught him how. The flutes, I'd give us a Fair out of the competition ranking: we got the notes right and everything, but it's dynamics and the accents that need work. Our staccatos aren't supposed to be accented, and we're supposed to breathe every four measures. The only thing we got right was our legato parts.

I really hope Mr. Ring comes back after what I just wrote.

Mr. Ring was pushing it hard on us yesterday, but it was understandable: we have a concert on Monday, and we're taping an audition. Funny, Mr. Ring thinks that we need more time in band, but he spends about 20 minutes of the class time in the office. Why can't Mr. Phelps do the thing that Mr. Ring does in the office? Honestly!

Skipped band today for Quiz Bowl Practice.

Mr. Ring is stretching us really thin--from reminding us about our good shoes to getting the phrasing right in Cayuga Lake. But it's understandable if we want to get to Disneyland....

The bad part is that about half of the class was gone for an engineering assembly. Sad, isn't it? And someone in the flutes kept forgetting the Key Signature (Eb Major) and kept doing their Ab as just A. I should be habitary by now seeing as we've been doing Cayuga Lake since October. Any wrong notes might cost us this trip, and for those of you who don't seem to care, Disneyland Trips were always really important to our school, not to mention ranking a Superior in the East County Music Festival.

Today was concert day number one. We didn't do well, but we weren't so horrible. We were playing for fifth Graders, hoping that they'd join band. Hey, we need to make up for lost time!

But we got to skip class for it, and we only played Cayuga Lake Overture and Under the Sea. We need to work on dynamics on Cayuga Lake, but I at least didn't forget to go to the second repeat in Under the Sea. But we weren't as bad as chorus, you could barely hear them. They're nice, but... well, I was right next to them and I couldn't hear them.

I hope we do better tomorrow, with the videographer coming in. Our stage presence better be good, and we better have gotten those dynamics down.
