Hey. I'm new to this group, and I wanna say hi. I havent been on here a while, but it seems like the discussion isn't as intense as I'd expect, so let me start some conversation.

Did anyone catch the Top 25 Events that Misshaped Black America hosted by Paul Mooney on BET on tuesday? As you guys can tell from the name of the show, it talked about all the different events and concepts that basically destroyed African Americans and made them what they are today. Here is the list:

25) Jheri curls (slight self-hatred aspect in there along w/ ruining ppl's furniture)
24) Hurricane Katrina (well. obviously.)
23) The N-Word (also obvious. ppl will never stop saying that)
22) Cointelpro (put a stop to the civil rights movement almost completely)
21) Elvis Presley (stole classic rock elements from black ppl, used it as his own, then made millions and took rock n roll from black ppl)
20) Negative Images in Hip Hop (self explanatory. booty butt CHEEKS!)
19) The Bling Phenomenon (because the money that bought platinum grills and $150 nikes should've went to a new house out of the ghetto instead)
18 ) Welfare (cuz ppl on welfare wont bother looking for a job)
17) The Justice System/Prison (new age slavery)
16) Color struck (brown paper bag tests, bleaching, "I'm part cherokee", etc.)
15) Ward Connerly (for pretty much ending affirmative action)
14) The Supreme Court (for the decisions it makes, usually not in some black ppl's favor)
13) Ronald Reagan (obviously his name had to be somewhere in this list)
12) The Bombing of Black Wall Street (What an atrocity...I wonder how many ppl have even heard of this...)
11) Soul Food (for clogging black ppl's arteries all over america)
10) Gangs (for killing our youth)
9) Hollywood (for the misrepresentation that's been going on)
8 ) The Murders of Malcolm & Martin (because we'll never have leaders like them again)
7) Proud to be Dumb (you know those dumbasses that call you white because you're smart? that's just...retarded)
6) The Ku Klux Klan (duh. btw the footage they had was just creepy)
5) Apartheid (aka segregation aka worse conditions for us)
4) Religion (because now most just pray if they want something instead of. you know. GETTING it themselves)
3) AIDS (cuz it's retarded that the group with the most AIDS are black females)
2) Drugs (because it left many ppl too dazed to care anymore)
1) Slavery (this is what started it all...)

Well. Something to talk about. So, what do you think of this list? Who or what else would you put on this list? Do you disagree w/ anything here? Btw, does anyone watch that show Black Men Revealed on TVone? Because they talk about a lot of these issues.

I don't know if this Boondocks group is anything like the other Boondocks groups I've been to. Like the Myspace one or the official Sony one. But if this group is anything like those than this post should be welcome.

**Edit: I changed the name of the thread because we stopped talking about the Top 25 Events that Misshaped Black America a long time ago. If you wanna come to the thread and talk, that's cool. If you came here late and want to talk about the 25 Events, that's cool too.

I agree and welcome your post whole-heartedly. I missed the segment last night, but I would love to talk about it. I dont know about the color-struck thing tho. I am actually part cherokee and blackfoot.... Have you ever read the book Destruction of Black Civilization? We've been messed up from the beginning..... Also, I would like to mention the decline of hip hop and the Barrack Obama issue. Oh, do you know of any other guilds on Gaia that discuss issues as these?

no, actually i dont know any other guilds like this.... which is why im glad i found this guild.

what dont you get about the colorstruck issue? it's the self hatred thing. how black girls perm their hair cuz they dont like the natural roughness. or how black ppl bleach. or how some ppl are so twisted that they brag about the part of them that's not black. i know this girl who bragged that her cherokee heritage was the reason that her hair grew (kinda) long. then she made fun of someone else i know for being dark even though she was not one shade lighter than him. self hate right there.

actually i've never read that book. i dont really have much time to read with my classes. i'll look it up though.

About the decline of hip hop. you know what i've always wondered that i wanted to just bring up? Public Enemy. Here we have pretty intelligent Chuck D. who obviously thought of those lyrics.... and then there's Flavor Flav. Who's a dumbass. So I wonder how they got together. Chuck D. is compared to a revolutionary.... and Flavor Flav is compared to a modern day minstrel. Explain this to me, please.

So anyways, back onto the point, it's dissapointing that Chuck D. today has faded into the background, yet Flav has that crazy show on VH1 that almost everyone has seen. That's exactly what happened to hip hop today. The music isn't inspiring and radical. The lyrics today barely even mean anything. And that's what's popular sad . I'm glad Nas came out with his new album though. That's one of few rappers who actually rap about something.

on the barrack issue? no offense, but i honestly dont believe america's ready for a black president. they are definitely ready for a women. i think hilary has to be president before barrack can. i mean, i hope he wins, but if he doesnt i dont want him to be discouraged from running again. America will probably be ready for him after hilary. Or they'll at least be ready for oprah.

Oh btw I know I went wayyyy off-topic sweatdrop , but if anyone else posts in this thread I want them to at least mention the initial topic of the 25 events that misshaped black america.

oh wow. the Self hate topic. Yeah, but thats nothing new. Black ppl have been doing that for centuries. Even before slavery. Yeah, you should definitely pick up that book. It make you aware of a lot of things. Yeah, hip hop was always about whats popular. Its just back then it meant something. Not everyone is ready to take hip hop and apply it to their lives. hell almost no one know what hip hop really is. oh well.... and i agree with you on barrack. The man is totally willing to bite the bullet for the job so I say let him go for. He actually has a little of America for him right now. If he loses I hope he at least becomes vice president.

Whoo. Yeah.
I'd expect the "N" word to be higher up on the list. It's much more derogatory than, say, Elvis Presley or soul food. I, personally, love eating my food cholesterol-injected. But I digress.
It's going to take a long time to repair the image society has of black people. Hopefully not too long.

The negative images in rap and hip-hop should be higher as well. I would like to listen to a rap song made in the past three years that doesn't involve "gats, 'hoes," or a "secret stash."
Honestly.
Andrew, can you find me a song like that?

Also, what is up with rappers and asses? It's like nothing else in the world exists besides drugs, gangs, and sex. And 'hoes for having sex with.
Why doesn't 50 Cent talk about how people in Africa are dying from diseases and genocide?
Where are Snoop and Jibbs with the songs about women getting their clitorises cut out?
What about Ludacris? or Little Kim? What is Mary J. Blige doing while people are starving in the streets, but their rich neighbors become fat from the profits made by selling "black gold?!"

Number twenty on the list! It's laughable.

I dont know. number 25 made me laugh. I totally feel you, Capt. Hotdog. Life and this world is not fair. They (the music artists) only say stop music piracy so that they buy a new boat or more bling.

Wow I need to check up on this thread more often.

Anyways, obviously it was low on the list. It's BET. They realize that negative images in hip hop is what they show on the network ALL DAY. Shows that shouldn't have anything to do with music (like the student center or hotwyred) show music videos every 5 minutes. So obviously they're gonna play it off like the bad hip hop today isn't affecting us that much.

Also, I didn't get why the n word was so low either. After michael richards? It should've been at least in the 'teens.

Oh and about what rappers talk about in their songs. Never give someone like 50 cent enough credit to say that they should be making meaningful songs. 50 cent is the one who said that GEORGE W. BUSH WAS "GANGSTA" FOR HANDLING HURRICANE KATRINA THE WAY HE DID. So basically he was complimenting bush for leaving ppl in new orleans to die. eek So obviously his morals are kinda messed up.

And um... who's clitorises are being cut out?

50 is a ******** idiot and his music sucks... People need to drop him and get into real artists. He doesn't even understand that his music isn't even hip hop... And Bush is a a** hole who got into collage and passed on a C average because daddy had a little pull around. He is SOOOO not gangsta...

When I think of slavery, I get mad at how our people didnt free themselves like white people did. Oh yeah, white people were slaves, too. For proof, read destruction of black civilization. heh, my friend thinks Bush is not to blame for our recent war.. stare

Yeah I was disgusted when I found out about this too. Which is why I don't listen to 50 cent anymore.

I knew women along with many other people in Sudan and other places are getting mutilated.... but cutting out a c**t is ridiculous. And sad.

Since we're discussing black people and becoming more aware, do you too feel anger when you look at who we are as a people now?
PostPosted: Sat Mar 03, 2007 12:22 pm

I would not say I get angry. I just want us to succeed. Our race has taken blow after blow and even though we try and pick ourselves up again we are not really moving forward. People are just beginning to scrape the surface on what we can do. People are just starting to realize that being black is not something to be ashamed of yourself for. It seems like people have left behind thier old notions and ways but untill I see us pull ourselves together and work towards a better world for ourselves properly I will still see all of our little accomplishment as they are. Little accomplishments.

Moving on. When I look at the kind of music we produce today I feel sort of helpless you know? There are still many artists out there who will speak about the truth (Last Poets, anyone?) but what is mainstream now is what is being fed to our youth. Maybe soon this lifestyle will lose it's shiny finish and people will start diging for deeper things but for now we jsut have to educate ourselves and the people around us

Actually I don't want barrack to win. The president after Bush is doomed to have a very very difficult 4 years in power and is probably going to make mistakes. There is too much on the line, too much for a chance for people to say "it was the black mans fault". I think that him running and people knowing that he had a chance is enough for blacks for now. The future will not slip from our fingers if we are careful.

We just may be scared of revolution.

Exactly. How can we move forward when over half of us are proud to be ignorant. When I think of hip-hop, I think of the Huxtables. Clare(old hip-hop) dealing with Vannessa's (mainstream)bullshit while Rudy(the future) looks on and Denise(new hip-hop) is chilling in the living room.

Anybody who succeeds after Bush is going to have a hard time running the country. No its not enough for him just to run. Jesse Jackson ran. Allen Hayes ran. Rev. Al Sharpton tried to run. I want him to win. I think Barrack could win and change it all. I want him to.

I think we are scared of revolution.
