I'm not sure what you mean, or at what level of flute you're on, but I'll try:

Begining:
Rythem (counting)
articulation
actually hitting the right note

Average:
Dynamics
Tone
Breathing (breath support and control)

Advanced:
Vibrato
More advanced breath control and support
theory
technique

Posture!!! and holding the flute, i.e. making sure hands aren't clenched, the thumb of the right hand is between 1st and 2nd fingers, etc. A good method for the holding position is to have the kids pick up a pencil, your thumb automatically goes between your fingers to grip. Check embochure as well it's very easy to get in the habit of having the corners of your mouth to high while playing and it's a pain to fix later.

Like you said, the embouchure is a big problem for a lot of people.
Usually the corners are so tight, and the jaw and mouth is just so tense.
Like I'm constantly saying all the time: relax and drop the jaw, air pressure against cheeks to determine the size of the aperture, support, fast air stream helps with having air pressure against the cheeks. So, all of those things help with embouchure.

I help teach the 8th graders at my school. They are able to play with the high school...so it's our job to help them fit into the section and prepare for playing freshman year.

There are a few things that I see a lot.

Make sure they position the tips of their fingers on the indentions of the keys if they have closed holes. Getting into that habit will help them in the future. Playing without the fingertips on the indentions really slows down the playing capability.

Tonguing. It took me a few days to get the concept. Two-Two-Two just didn't really help me out. But then one day I finally understood. What is really common is blowing small breaths of air for each note instead of actually tonguing. So just watch for that.

Another is bobbing the head while changing between notes. Have them play in front of a mirror. (my flute section lives in the girls bathroom during sectionals so thats what we do a lot)

Ummm, also getting the concept of faster air and how to do it. Such as decreasing the size of the hole of your mouth and blowing more air through it without playing too tensely.

And like others mentioned, rythms. Do daily rythms with them. Like counting and saying half notes/rest, whole, quarter, 18th etc. (that will greatly help)

a good way to get flute players to have their fingertips covering the indentations in the keys (so they will be able to cover the holes when they upgrade to an open holed flute) is to get those circle stickers (the one you use to repair the holes in your paper so you can put it back into a binder) and stick them on the keys where the indentation is. It works!
