I'm thinking about getting a vertical labret piercing.
and before I get it pierced I'd like to know the gauge and type of jewelry they generally take.
Anyone know?

Curved barbells (implant grade stainless steel or titanium). Pretty much any gauge you want- they'll start with 16g-14g being the smallest for facial piercings.
