GekkÅ Hayate was the examiner of the preliminary third portion of the Chunin exams. The name "Gekko" means "moonlight" and "Hayate" means "quick as wind". Both are names of Japanese fighter planes from World War II. At first sight, Hayate appears to not be in the best of health, as he has a constant cough and a somewhat sickly look about him, said to be caused by a childhood illness. Though these things make him appear weak, he is actually a very skilled ninja, who can perform a technique with his sword called "Dance of the Cresent Moon".
After the preliminaries, Hayate overhears plans of the attack on Konoha. He flees to pass the message but is persued and cut off by Baki, the sand village ninja. They fight and unfortunatly, Hayate is killed shortly after. His body is discovered by ANBU the next morning who, obviously, have no idea who could have done such a thing. Hayate dies trying to save his village. Very sad.
