As most of us here have Asperger's Syndrome, we all have our indiviual and slightly odd ways of talking. I was wonder how we speak to people.

For me, when talking to someone in person, I usually talk in a soft tone so I don't strain my voice too much. I also usually go circullar about a subject, meaning I can talking about astrophysics, then talk about theology, then come back to astrophysics by tying it to theology.

I really have no idea how I talk to people, I just talk to them the way that I know, when I can at least. I never talk until spoken to, then it's just something small then I leave it at that.

The one really obvious difference in the way I speak and NTs' manner of speaking has to do with volume, mainly. I have a really hard time judging how loud my voice should be versus how loud it actually is, and am constantly being told I'm yelling, that I'm way too loud, or something else to that extent. I also have what's basically the polar opposite of a monotone--I have a very...enthusiastic voice, and also use a lot of gestures. Think of how a motivational speaker usually acts and talks, except this time it's applied to every aspect of life.

Hm, very interesiting, Radioactive Dinosaur. You have similar enthustiastic speaking qualities as I do. I even do weird and dymamic poses. Example: I recited the first eighteen lines of The Canturburry Tales in Middle English. I closed my eyes to get a good visual of what I was saying, and I moved my body and arms to show visually of what I was saying.

I am very soft-spoken and people often have to tell me to speak up. My voice is not totally monotone but it is somewhat flat, and I have a difficult time getting inflection into it. When I do, it is quite concious effort.

On occasion, I will get too loud, as well, or just talk and talk and talk, but most often I am extremely quiet.. to the point where some people didn't even think I could speak, when I was in high school.

The way I talk? I guess I must be a bit confusing because I find people don't always understand what I'm trying to say. Around people I don't know too well, I tend to be laconic. When I try explaining things to people they often go "WTF?" and I have to find a way to rephrase it. Around friends I talk a lot more freely, and my meaning is usually discerned throughout a conversation. My speech is a bit more formal and elaborate than most, also, I think.

@_@
I think I have found my twin!
My voice is never monotonous, never!
Unless I'm REALLY depressed, not too often...
But really, I'm pretty sure I use many guestures, as of late, I don't really talk to others much, I spend most of my time on Gaia....
Because then I don't have people constantly saying I'm yelling, or that they can't hear me (in the times I'm depressed or sad, no one can hear a word....) and I don't have to tell people to speak up because I cannot hear them!

When talking to someone, especialy when they've asked a question that I don't really know the answer to or how to explain it, my voice is "soft" even though I don't realize it is with my special hearing and it probably just ends up as a muffle. I cannot say anything without 'uh' or 'um' to give me time to think of what I should say unless I've thought about the answer before. They person usally asks me to repeat myself, which I hate. I do not make much eye contact while talking and with the combination of all this, people have mistaken me for being "shy".

Same here, except that I vary between too loud and too quiet depending on the situation. Generally, I get it wrong. I speak too loudly when I'm supposed to be quiet, and I speak so softly that people can't hear me at other times.

My voice can also be monotonous, but I think it's just when I speak English (I have a Cantonese accent). I actually use a lot of gestures, even when I'm on the phone, which I know is silly since the other person won't see it, but I can't help it. (Then again, once I was reading about Japanese customs, and the text mentioned that since Japanese people bow when they greet each other, some people even bow when they talk on the phone, so it's not really that unreasonable to make hand gesture on the phone if you're really used to doing so when you speak face-to-face.)

Thank you guys for responding to my topic. ^_^

Hm, it seems most of us have volume control difficulties. Does that mean people with Asperger's have a hard time in using correct tones and volumes when speaking? It's just a thought, and I'm sure it's wrong.

Anyway, I also see that I am not the only one who uses hand gestures when talking. Maybe it's another way Aspies communicate.

I'm not good at controlling my facial expressions either. I smile without noticing it, even at times when I really shouldn't. When I was in year 9, I had a teacher who constantly asked me "why are you smiling?", and I hated him for it.

My brother uses his hands a lot. People often tell me to shut up because I am talking "too loud". I think they're stupid.

I repeat words all the time (mine or otherwise) and use hand gestures alot. Sometimes the hand gestures aren't even synchronized to represent what i am talking about. I have no ability whatsoever to determine whether I am quiet or not. From what everyone tells me I'm really quiet, unless I am with friends in which case I speak really loud. mrgreen mrgreen

And of course, Jessica with the really odd expressions. OH yea I often also when I am telling friends about Onierology they tell me to slow down and/or 'speak english'.

Back to the odd expressions. I'll smile or frown depending on things like, if I am drawing a picture, I'll pose the same expression my character has.

and i have a monotone unless i'm talking to friends and getting 'excited' in which i vary sooo much.

People are always telling me I need to be quieter..... I am much better as to when I was younger, but my voice is not easily modulated....

My friend told me that I speak oddly. Like Overly formal speach and using words that are odd to use for certin situations and comments. (I blame the books.)

She also said that my pitch would either be too loud or too soft and that i'll be very excited on certin topics that I like. (hey, I like my Facinations! biggrin )

Ah, I get the opposite a lot. "Smile!" "Why aren't you smiling?!"

My brother complains to me about that a lot. I'm constantly using words he doesn't know. Not that they are particularly unusual or difficult, they are just more formal than most people would use in the particular conversation.
