Where I am from, people call that getting a render. A render is an image skillfully cropped from it's original picture. Most people do it by cropping it and using the magic lasso tool. That is all I know. Maybe I will find a tutorial on it; if I do, I'll post it here in this subforum.
I was pretty sure it's commonly known as cutting. There are tons of cutting websites and communities out there that offer cut images in PSD or PNG form, mostly of celebrities, as resources for layouts and things. I used to be part of one.
Manually erasing is
definitely better and safer than using the magic lasso, in my opinion, albeit slower.
