Our band is dwindling down to half it's size every year and it needs to stop.

If you could give some ideas on how to bring up the band numbers or get more recruits, the help would be greatly appreciated.

I love the band as i'm sure everyone does, and it hurts to see it suffer. thank you for any help you can offer.

Do the elementary and junior high schools have bands?
Our band invites the junior high to play pep band songs with us at one of our football games. While they're there, they also get to see that year's marching show. My junior high also went to some elementary schools to play for them.
I actually made a promise to one girl who was in the band that I would be in it too when I got to high school. I kept that promise, obviously!

Another idea that I did was talk about band to your friends. If you have any musician friends, or even just friends that might be interested in joining band and learning, talk about it. I can't even say how many of my band friends joined because they heard me or one of my other friends talking about how much fun we have. It's a one on one thing so you know if it makes an impact, and you and your band friends can "divide and conquer"!

That is a REALLY good question. I am a band director and I have always had the dwindling numbers problems, I think these are some of the problems that led to my troubles. 1) Feeder schools losing their teacher and getting one they didn't like or none at all! 2) Band requiring too much of their time. 3) Negative band members infecting the go getters.

I would recommend having fun activities for some things. Working people to the bone and forcing them to have their music perfectly memorized before band camp begins is heracy.

You could try to get more days were you take the band on trips, not just to play, but also to hang out with each other. Tell people how much fun you have and how exciting it is. This year I have aton of my friends that tried out for it this year and made it!

if your band goes on a trip that includes something else ( theme park...)
you'd be surprised how many people will be signing up...!

I know what you mean about the band dwindling. In my section, next year we will possibly only have three flutes. A lot of people are going out for colorgaurd, rather than stay in their section...

I don't know how to help you with recruitment because our band is over 200 members but we have a very large school, one thing we do is go play for elementary schools and jr. highs
