My 4 favorite bands are The Academy Is..., My Chemical Romance, Muse, and Kill Hannah, who I can't choose who's better. I also like H.I.M., Disturbed, Linkin Park, AFI, Malice Mizer, The Cranberries, Skylar Blue, Panic! At The Disco, and I'm getting into Scarlet Grey.

I personally don't like any of those bands.
Pretty much anything with musical forethought or difficulty to play.
Mainly though:
Primus
Yes
Rush
Led Zeppelin

Are you saying these bands don't have forethought?

Of those you listed, pretty much. I have never heard any bass players from any of those bands play anything but the simple root part, and maybe the occasional 5th and/or 8th above. But really, not very challenging music. I just can't get into it, sorry.

Nah, it's ok. I couldn't care less how hard the part is, as long as it sounds good to me.

That's what i don't like about the modern music scene. There's almost no talent involved, and those who think up the catchiest, most cliche melodies get praise and fame for a mediocre job, while hardworking musicians get stiffed and denied the attention they've earned.

Still, I'd rather hear a song that catches me, than a song that has the bassplayer going BrabrabrabrabraPINKPINKPINKthumpthumpthumpthump. All the time.

Favorite bands:

Blink 182
Rancid
The Donnas
The Distillers
Lars Fedrickson and the Bastards
Reel big Fish
The Aquabats

I very much like your taste in music
Quite a few of those bands have good bassists who play an integral part of the melody, and help form the band rather than keep the root key signature.

Heh, wierdly enough, my favorite bands don't have that good of bass parts (Well, mostly), and the bands that do I don't like the bass. It's not that I like easy, it's just the harder bass parts are usualy played in jazz, classic rock, etc, which I don't like. It's probably because I like pedals and other stuff to make the bass sound different.

That's kinda funny, because classic rock bassists use more distortion that reasonable sometimes. Honestly, almost all classic rock bassists use one form of distortion or another. Check out some Yes, Chris Squire is not only a genius but also has one of the best tones and distortion setups ever.

you should be more open minded...

a narrow mind leads to a narrow playing style... and lack of creativity...

The Mars Volta has an amazing bassist and he has a ton of effects... Les Claypool uses a ton of effects... Chris Squire uses some... a lot of jazz fusion bassists use effects... and funk...

but, if you want to be stuck... dont broaden your horizons

your call mrgreen

sorry people, but i gotta go with the classic bands.... i have heard more bass guitar in the 70's and 80's... i would like a band to come in that would blow my mind!!! but, so far no ones pulled anything real spectacular or phenomonal since '95...
