I've got a story idea I've been batting around for a while now, but haven't started as I can't really decide whether it makes a better fanfiction or original story.
In the first chapter or two, the character goes about the events of her daily life probably around 2006-07. This section won't be extensive, just long enough to establish some basic facts about who she is, where her career is, the state of her family, etcetera.
In the next part, the character wakes up in the hospital and finds out she was in a car crash, and comatose for a week or two. It's around 1996, and everything she thought had happened through 2006 was a comatose dream - her family doesn't exist, people who died in the dream are still living, her career is headed in a completely different direction, etcetera.
The remaining chapters would follow her trying to sort out what went on in the dream -should she try to pursue the life she had in the dream? Are things that occured in the dream things that may actually happen? Are any of the things she learned about herself in the dream actually applicable to her life now?
If I write this as an original story, I've still got to hash out the details of the character. If I write it as a fanfic, I will probably use Kerry Weaver from ER as the main character.
Any thoughts on which format this story is better suited to are welcome, along with any suggestions or concerns about the plot.

I really, really like that idea o: It sounds very unexpected - but not in a bad way - and original. It also sounds fairly realistic, too, and not to mention really grabbed my attention.
Personally, I think I'd choose original story over fanfic, but the choice is, obviously, up to you. Good luck with it!

The other thing I toyed with was possibly writing it as a screenplay, but I don't know how I'd be able to get into the characters' heads other than with voiceovers, which I think would come off as hackneyed.

*shrugs* I always think if it is possible to make it an orignal story, you'd better make it original. I don't like fan-fics except when roleplaying ... which is fan-rolaplaying? *sounds like and idiot*
