- The Northernlands -

- art by [ Adonai ] -

WORLD MAP

The region which many Gaians call "The Northernlands" is often mistaken for a barren and snowy wasteland, when in fact the Archipelago is one of the most technologically developed regions in the world, as well as the source of most oil used by Gaians and the rest of the known world. Climate wise, think of Iceland. Yes, it is quite cold and snowy, but it also has its share of beautiful weather. Located several hundred miles north from the continent of Gaea, the collective continent of the Northernlands is actually a set of three large "main" islands plus the numerous minor islands scattered across the region.

The western island has been named the "Vhar'dun" continent after the first nomad king who drove the various clans from their lands and civilized the place. Located on this island is the Capital of the archipelago, Nordesvok, the seat of the ruling State Empire today.

The eastern island is by far the more exotic of the two, being named "Aeginovk". Unlike Vhar'dun, Aeginovk is much less populated due to a lack of interest concerning the Empire and it's belief that the region is of no real profit or importance. Thus the area is quite rural and free of the Empire's rule, governed by local landowners and such. Here is to be found huge rolling plains, much unlike the rocky and mountainous land which makes up most of the western island.

The third major island is much more different than the other two, for it is this island which correctly fulfills most assumptions of the Northernlands. Unlike the other islands, the third does not contain a noticeable cycle of seasons, as it remains frozen and barren year round, devoid of any plant life besides the hardy white aspen found throughout the archipelago. The name given to this godforsaken land is "Nienschtovk", after the pure snow which covers it completely. Over twenty years ago, the island was the key battleground in a war which the entirety of the Northernlands is still recovering from. Besides valuable oil farms and mineral veins deep underground, it is unknown why the war was started in the first place.

The Imperial Capital of Nordesvok

Location

Located near the center of the Vhar'durn landmass (the largest of the four main islands making up the Archipelago), the large city is home to over 5 million people, most of who make up the middle-class. The positioning of the city is in favor of trade, which is the central reason for its size. It is located on a sort of island between two large rivers which acts as a causeway between the opposite ends of the island. Around 50 miles to the north, steep mountains cause the relatively flat land to end, and a thick forest surrounds the city to the north and northwest.

Government

The capital of the Continent, a large metropolitan area governed by the supreme ruling-force of the land, the State. Largely run by various high-ranking politicians as well as religious magistrates, the central system of government is quite corrupted while being run by several military contractors. Having ended a war not so long ago, the government is in slight disarray, what with the President missing and all..

Layout and Architecture

The city itself is built around a large spring which provides a source of clean water, warmth, and infinite energy produce, seeing as massive turbine generators beneath the city are turned by the constant pressure of the underground water.

The city space is organized into blocks generally about a half-mile in width and height, with obvious deviations when regarding special plots of land or residential areas. The city is a subtle mixture of classic building styles involving much brick and concrete (much grittier architecture) and a dashing modern take with sweeping concrete stadiums, opera houses, and government buildings. (Think Chicago or New York) Little vegetation is to be seen throughout the city asides from the Central Gardens located half a mile east of the State Government building. The specific area is dedicated to showcase the scientific and natural history of the city, often in the form of large museums.

Many buildings are over four stories tall, and rarely is there to be seen any building smaller, most of the population lives in spacious apartment/condo complexes revolving around a certain district culture. Very little of the Inner city is occupied by anyone earning less than or around minimum wage. An outer ring revolving just west of the outside of the Inner city is reserved for the Slums, a decrepit community of poor people.

Fauna

Much of the life asides from humans is reserved for pigeons, raccoons, and rarely wolves from the mountains just north to the city. A State-run Zoological institute is located near the Gardens, and there is to be found exotic animals from around the world.

The Town of Varuna

Description

Varuna is the relatively quiet seaside town situated neatly amidst the hilly coasts of the Myrian Sea. Though small in respect to cities such as Nordesvok, the town actually bustles with the activity of various merchants coming and going within the large harbor for which the city is known most for. Even with modern technologies, the city itself seems a relic of the past, steeped in a classical style which is evident both visually and socially.

Like many people of the surrounding area, the common eye colors in Varuna are violet and a dark maroon. Due to religious fervor, people with radically different colored eyes are often considered somewhat unclean and corrupt with malicious spirits. The religious affiliation of Varuna is strangely region-specific and therefore different from the rest of those populating the continent.

Climate

Being one of the southernmost cities of the Continent, Varuna happens to have one of the more temperate climates compared to other cities. The normal temperature during summer is around 65 degrees C while during winter, the temperature easily plummets to around 5 - 10 degrees C. For most of the year, the skies are constantly full of clouds and a bright blue. Due to the proximity of the town to the ocean, there is an ever-present wind blowing gently about the city.

Description & History

The mountaintop Temple of Ürum is located somewhere within the only dense forest to be found on the eastern Island - A testament to the ancient peoples who inhabited the area millenia before Vhar'dun conquered the region. The reason for the Temple's existence is still unknown, though the researchers of today regard the tower as a site dedicated to a goddess of the forest. Despite well executed efforts, archaeologists have managed only to penetrate to the towers' 4th floor, whereupon one finds a massive door which is unable to open. It has been guessed that according to scriptures written on the outer surface of the temple, over a hundred more floors extend into the bowels of the mountain upon which it sits. As of now, researchers have abandoned their studies, summoned upon by the Empire to dig around in the battlefields of Nienschtovk.

TESTING FACILITY-MAIN COMPLEX

- DESCRIPTION - LOCATION - CLIMATE -

Disclaimer> Written in its entirety by War Casualty.

Deep within the recesses of huge glaciers near the Northern Mountains is where the Facility is located. Although many a testing facility were built during this time, none have gained the reputation of the first to be built.

  • Description and History:

Located about 2000 meters beneath sea level, the Facility was initially a simple warehouse, hewn from the ice and stone to better preserve precious archaeological findings of the occupying Military of the time. Over time, the area gained importance as a hidden military complex for the development of weapons to further aid the cause of the Government. On the date of XX/XX/XXXX, a cache of ancient organic material was to be found preserved deep within the ice somewhere around the Facility. The chemical compounds of the organic tissue proved to be fundamental in beginning the artificial development of a similar compound, which was later used in the genetic experimentation to be held in the same area.

The artificial "blood", as it was called, was at first injected directly into the bloodstreams of its intended subject, often at the cost of draining the individual of their own blood and being fully populated by the strange chemical body-stimulant. This initial procedure caused massive genetic deformities in the test subject, often killing them or mangling their bodies beyond repair. The few who could withstand the trauma of the procedure and survive were often gifted with heightened senses all-around and great strength and speed. It was then to be discovered that the organic material found was none other than the remains of an individual who belonged to the race of beings once thought of by primitive humans as a race of gods. The discoverers of the remains named the being 'Rajasuya', after a mystic hero who sacrificed himself to become one with Indra, the god of war. The Main Complex was the infamous creator of numerous killers and assassins, the same people who would eventually come to destroy the Facility itself.

  • Location:

The exact position of the Facility is current unknown. A vast island wasteland near the upper north of the continent has been said to be the resting place of the abandoned Facility, but today the people of the Continent regard the island as the abode of demons and monsters.

  • Climate:

A simple word easily describes the nature of the Island; freezing. Not much survives around the island, and the only known plants to exist are the hardy aspens known 'round the continent as well as small lichen. The temperature near the Island specifically ranges from -10 to around -79 degrees Celsius. The weather is always overcast and it snows year-round.

  • Fauna

In the present time, no normal living creature is said to live in the harsh climes of the Island, yet recent sightings as well as past recordings have led to the belief that monstrous abominations of human life are living in their places of rebirth. Most logically the creatures are failed experiments from long ago, further mutated from years of inbreeding. From recent and brutal killings, it is assumed that these creatures hate all forms of 'normal' human life. It is not known if the creatures have some sort of social structure.

The Crystal Reef

Description

Sometime relatively recent, a small outcrop of a strange mineral began to grow underwater into what could easily be described as a coral reef. While underwater the growth went by unnoticed by local fishermen and other seafarers until one day, an old man and his son happened to snag their fishing boat onto a sharp edge of the growth. Sometime later back on the shore, the two exited fishermen reported their findings to the local peacekeeper of the town, along with a sample of the dark mineral, which was a translucent black crystal very similar in structure obsidian..

Nowadays the growth only barely protrudes over the surface of the water, misleading those on the surface as to the massive structure underwater.

more later..

I'm gonna post here since I'll have you do something else with this anyway...

If this is a separate continent, I may have to talk to MerDefsGirl about getting a new subforum for it, because mixing this up with the Continent of Tellus may get confusing for the users. Also each area should probably be its own thread, but other than that, the entire thing looks great.

Well...I wasn't planning on having one thread like this....it isn't logical in any way whatsoever. I just presented it like this for your convenience. All of these weren't written by me.. and you can find the original format for these areas HERE. It's how they were meant to be seen.

Though I'm not really asking for the entire continent itself to be considered, just the individual places themselves. sweatdrop

Oh yea, feel free to start making threads for any and all of these. Keep them here in the OOC area while you put them together, and I'll move them when you're finished.
