I'm sad. My pet Hermit Crab, named Poseidon, passed away. I don't know exactly when, as he was partially buried in the sand to sleep yesterday.
But when I woke up this morning I found his exoskeleton, as he sudenly molted. He was still in his shell off in the corner. He wasn't moving, but that is a normal thing for a 40+ year old Crab, particularly after a molt.
I took a nap in the afternoon and when I woke up, there wasn't much left. The other Hermit Crab, Kali, was found eating his remains. This is normal behaviour for Hermit Crabs to do with one that has been dead for roughly a day or more.
So, he must have died after I checked on him this morning. Molting is never easy on a Hermit Crab, and the stress of having done it so suddenly must have been too much for him, despite the fact he looked alright that morning.

After my 17th cat... I just burried the pet and didn't die... So much death in my life... I didn't cry when my grandpa died... So... Advice for you... Don't see to much death in your life.

Poseidon was buried out in the yard today. we have a wooden spoon as a gravemarker so we know where he is.
Cali has been acting a bit odd lately though, not quite as active as she usually is.
We think she's preparing to molt now since normally if one Hermit Crab molts, the others get a whiff of the hormones and it can cause them to molt as well.
We have better sand in the tank now, and hopefully if she does start molting she comes out OK.

Thanks all. I've had a couple people look at me odd when they hear the pet that died that I miss is a crab. I guess they figure they're like pet fish and most people don't care if their fish die.
I'm sorry to hear you had to have your horse put down, Cherry. It's not very easy to have that kind of thing happen.

~puts a trident by the spoon, and a small gravestone with the inscription, "Here lies the body of a crab, but so lives on the soul of Poseidon", and then puts a horseshoe by Cherry's horse's grave and a tombstone saying, "I may have been put down but I now run with the wind"~

Thanks Zedd, I know, it's very hard, it's been years since Big Red's death and I wish I can see her on Earth again, when she had to be put down, I was in tears and it was very hard to say goodbye. crying

Shedding fur/skin/exoskeleton depending on the animal. Not surprisingly spelt "moulting" over here.
