It's that time again. Yes, it's Mini March National Novel Writing Month Madness 2007! The challenge? Simple. In March, write a 30,000 word ( or more ) story using a totally cliched storyline, but improve it to be orginal and readable.
My story is going to be "The Royal Contest," and I even have my plot all written out this time! Because it's only the 8th, I should be able to get 30k words in by March 30th if I write 1500 words a day.
Unfortunately, I think I'm only going to be able to write 750 words a day on a regular basis, but that's okay, since I already broke up my story into 10 chapters with 4 scenes per chapter. That means that each scene should be about 750 words long. Convenient, isn't it?
anyways, my story is going to have a goatherder, a Princess, and a Prince. That's like the cliche of the cliches, right? But wait! we have many torturings for our hero fair, and things are not as one might expect. You see, the Princess actually ACTS LIKE A FRIGGIN' PRINCESS. Which means she's slightly snooty and definitely doesn't like smelly goatherders. And, if everything goes according to my wonderful plotline, the goatherder doesn't get the Princess.
See? The cliche already isn't! Of course, I can't spoil the plot for my rabid readership, so be sure to look at it once I post it up on my fictionpress page! (Which I promise to do every chapter.)

Frederick Boheme V, 3rd Prince of Bohemia ( 18 )( being the 3rd prince means he was the 4th male child, since the first one is the crown prince )

Progress so far:
Chapters: 1/4
Word Count: 761
Current Chapter's title: The Road to the Castle
Torturings:
3 wolves are very hungry.
3 wolves get hurt.
15 goats get the poop scared out of them when the wolves attack.
3 goats die. ( At this point in the story, the goats aren't numbered, so that's a fourth-wall torture, maybe. )
Patrick doesn't get a good night's sleep.
The point of this scene is to establish Patrick's skill with a sling and a stick. He's not helpless, and he handily beats the fight out of the mangy mutts. Of course, to be fair, the wolves haven't been eating very well recently.

Current Chapter's title: "The Tournament Begins"
Torturings:
Patrick gets beat up by a couple of sneaky thievses
Patrick and Frederick get lost in the Castle
Pat & Fred have to spend the night in a stinky Inn
Pat spends a lot of money on a shiny green silk bandana so he looks good
Fred spends money on arrows since his are impromptu
Lots of stuff has happened! Pat met Fred, who saved him (and his goats) from two thieves who didn't fight fair. Also, they meet a not-very-nice woman who runs the inn. But, they both manage to pass the first contest, which is hitting a target. All distances are given in goat-lengths, which is, not suprisingly, the length of your average goat.

Moar Update!
Chapters: 1 3/4
Word Count: 5,503
Current Chapter: Still the same one
Tortures!
Merchant gets beat with a stick.
Banker gets smacked with a sheathed sword
A wrestler named Greg Hardy gets knocked the ^$#& out ( insert expletive of choice )
An ex-gladiator named Dire Hank runs into a stick.
Patrick's poor stick breaks. sad
Okay, so the second competition is non-lethal combat. And Patrick has to fight Vaferius Fodoroski, a traveling grape juice merchant. Poor Vaferius only has a thick club, so he loses. Prince Fred gets to fight a banker named Jim-Bob-Dave-Jack-Grant-Sam McHenry.
I'll let you guess the outcome of the fight. It wouldn't be much of a story if our two protaganists lost, now would it? As mentioned in the torture section, Fred knocks out his opponent, while Pat's is sorta a tie. More updates to come!

If you're wondering why Charlie took so long to update, it's because he's been... busy. Blame the gun breaking. Charlie does. Granted, the gun wasn't broken all the time, but we're blaming it anyways. On to the update news! Chapters: 2 Word count: a little over 6,200 (the chapter ran a little long) Current chapter: 3 Tortures! Bad jokes? Seriously, the third competition in the contest is a riddle contest. Each contestant had to make up a riddle concerning their present to the princess. I actually looked up a medieval riddle for Prince Fred. For Pat, I used my infamous riddle. Here it is for your amusement. See if you can guess the answer! Round like the moon, Yellow like the sun. When you put me in your mouth, I'm a lot of fun! And in other news, Chapter 1 is up on fictionpress. Chapter 1 Enjoy!

Update!!!111!one!!!oneone!!!!!11!! Chapters:2 1/2 No new characters, but the Royal Alchemist finally gets named. He's going to be slightly more important to the plot pretty soon, so he gets a name. Word Count: Just under 7,500 Tortures: Well, other than having to listen to the Royalty of Pennisillen tell them about the next competition (it's a race!), there's always the race itself. You see, the castle is BIG. And they get to run around it. Before they even get to the outer walls, they have to run past 100 of the dampest sea snake vendors in the country. And if you haven't eaten a large breakfast, there's nothing quite like the smell of damp sea snake to get your appetite worked up. Plus, the whole getting tired from actually running around a large castle. So our characters get a good dose of pain here. And, yes. Chapter 2 is up on my fictionpress page. So go read it.

Chapter 3 is done, I just haven't uploaded it yet. Warning, it has a cliffhanger.
Anyway, new totals!

Whew, that was a long race! See comments above. so, what will happen next? you'll find out when I get around to writing it.
Also: I would like critiques. And, I get to bug Erika because she's critiqued my Hobel was Red story, but never sent me the critique! Ahem. So, if you do write a critique, please send it to me.

Okay, so I finally got my third chapter up, mostly because I was confused earlier and the chapter was, in fact, only halfway done. So this chapter ended up being 250 words less than the 3000 of the other ones, so I'll have to make the next one a little longer to keep my average up. It's a good thing the next chapter starts with a fight scene!

Yay! The fight scene is! Okay, so now we have:
Chapters: 3 1/4
Words: Exactly 9,775
New tortures! Yes, this is the part you are waiting for. Don't worry, I won't disappoint you!
2 squires: kick the bucket in a grisly manner because of [spoiler deleted].
1 guard: gets severely injured and will be O.O.C. (out of commission, not character, dammnit) for the remainder of the story, also due to [spoiler deleted].
1 [spoiler deleted]: dies. 'Nuff said.
1 Princess: missing and presumed raped.
1 lizard: missing and presumed dead.
1 Kingly predecessor: driven psychotic by daring to disturb the Royal Alchemist while he was meditating.
So far this chapter has much more animal torture than my previous ones. Sure the wolves were beaten up, but they weren't killed. Also has some gore for good old-fashioned horror. All in all, it's shaping up to be a decent chapter.
