Hi there.
I just got braces today to fix up my 8 millimeter overbite/jet. And I was worried that I wouldn't be able to play my flute. So I tried, and all that came out was a dry, airy sound mixed in with some weak sound. I think it's because since my incisors (is that how you spell em?) stick out so much and my braces build up even more on them, the shape of my lips change and I can no longer play my flute well. Or I'm just not used to it.
Help? Advice, please?

Soon I am going to have this problem, and yet all I can think of is to just... well, this takes a lot of patience, but start from the basics until you get used to playing with your braces well.

Start with whistle tone exercises, these teach you to direct your air correctly, which is the most important part of playing with or without braces. Also if the braces are pretty new, you need to give your mouth a chance to get used to them before you should even bother trying to play. That would be like learning to jog before learning to walk.

Well, for one thing, make sure your lips are stretched all the way over your braces... if you dont have a flute teacher, I suggest taking a few lessons. That really helped me get my sound. You will probably be able to play in a few days. Just dont give up and keep practicing!

I got braces a while ago. I had the same problem. You just have to adjust your playing. I know, it takes a while, but you'll get it.

Honestly, I don't remember how my flute playing was after I got my braces. I know it probably took some adjustment, but I just let it happen over time by figuring it out whenever I played. When I got them off, I didn't have a problem switching back.

You have that problem? I have braces, and I never had that problem. It's been two years since I first got my braces on, so I honestly can't remember. If your braces are still hurting though, I'd suggest you not try to play at first. Try to get used to it slowly. I'm sorry I couldn't help more.

I've had braces for 2 and half years, but I'm a little worried about getting them off. Getting them on was a little difficult. There was a few extra millimeters that I had to get used to... You'll be fine. Just practice more. Lol.

I have had my braces on for 3 and a half years. Unfortunately, I got them on just as I was starting flute (6th grade) so I basically learned how to play while wearing braces. Luckily, I get them off next month, I think, so I'm hoping it will help my embouchure on flute as well as piccolo because my band director is letting me play it for marching season and concerts. A couple upperclassmen did make a remark last year that I had a strange embouchure when I played, but they just figured it was because of the braces.
Anyway, try and bring your lips over your braces. It takes time getting used to.
