Here's a link to a site where you can download a lot of useful guides on how to draw manga and cartoon. The site is brasilian, but the guides are mostly in English (some in Spanish), and fully listed on the left side column under "Apostilas", so they're easy to find even if you don't understand a word of what's written on the site.

Enjoy! wink

Hm, well the site layout changed since last I visited. They placed the navigation column on the right now. Just click on "Apostilas" to open the page where all the links to the pdfs are, then do some «link fishing». Like I said, the site isn't in english, but those documents are. Have fun!

Fun, fun! Maybe we should move this to references, though...

Done. The subforum didn't exist when I first created the topic... smile

I hate bilingual sites. All the anime-style how-to books I read only tell you how to draw certain characters. ninja stare

Then try the "How to Draw Manga" and "More How to Draw Manga" series. I love them, but they are only really for those of decent skill. There are no good beginner books that teach you how to do the body with circles and whatnot, and at least for me those don't help, anyway.

The aforementioned series are good for showing you what to do (how wrinkles form in different types of cloth, what eyes shapes suggest what, how to imply that a carried object is heavy, etc.) but do not show you how to do it, per se. That you need to learn for yourself as an artist.

There are no books that will show you the circles and lines to spoon-feed you - at least there are no good ones for that. Don't worry about your initial attempts looking funny. Mine were pretty sad for the first couple years, too, but I've gotten much better. Just go for it and see what you can do on your own.

Fine. When school comes back into session I'll bring my very first drawing notebook. It has my 3-rd-ever attempt at drawing a manga-style human. It is pathetic. And if you laugh, I'll be really pissed.

LOL! Well, at least I can say I've improved since then, though there wasn't exactly too much room to get worse... ninja

I'm not beating up on myself. Sadly, that is a simple fact. In my father words, my hands "looked like knives."
