hey i need you guys to give me some ideas for monsters that would be good for a lvl 7-9 party and lives in a cave. I've gone thru all teh monster manuals and havent found anything i like. you can use monsters you have created yourself to. thx

if you are at a road block, then why not make up some 7th to 9th level NPC's for them to fight. Use this method for rolling stats...

4d6 (drop lowest die) - 3

also a couple of evil spell casters with the ability to summon monster (1 to 3) is good seeing as how summoned monsters do not add to the challenge rating of an encounter.

So... if your players party consists of 4 active combatants at level 7, send 6 level 3 NPC's with low stats, and 1 level 8 NPC with low stats. the level 9 is the boss of the group.

Depending on the qualities of the cave, they might consist of say...

1x Human Sorcerer(4)/Rogue(2)/Shadow Dancer(2)
3x Dark Stalkers (CR 4 found in the fiend folio on page 3 cool
3x Dark Creepers (CR 3 Found on page 38 of the fiend folio)

Like Naryssa said, keep in mind the monster itself doesn't have to be within the target level bracket. You just have to build an encounter that is. Take a look at the CR for a couple've creatures you like, then throw 'em together into the mix. Heck, enough Stirge could be a level appropriate encounter for a level 7 party (they're swamplands, though. So, no go for the cave.)

My personal favorite was sending 120 Goblin warriors at my party of 4 players. (3x at el 13, 1x at level 15 and 1x NPC at ECL 7 to lower the party ECL AND Steal exp)

Total Encounter level for the fight... EL 11 with a party level of 13.7 which only gives... 325 exp to the level 13's, 188 to the level 15, and 1400 to the level 7.

and they only get 6k worth of stuff to split between themselves after all is said and done. arent i a stinker?

They had a blast. basically they had to cut down a TON of goblins to get into a cave under the goblin village. (They pissed off the village on a failed Diplomacy check. Rolled a 1).

It was fun though. lotta hacking and maiming. Good thing i have a nice combat program. (I used a digital Mini map with digital minis, as well as DM Genie to keep track of the creatures HP and to roll my dice. With out DM Genie and that Map program it would have been DM HELL.)

Here is what I had as a boss for a lvl 9 campaign:
A drider lich. (minus lvls for becoming drider, making him be able to be a lich)
It had the ability to climb walls. It had the ability to be invisible! It was perfect for a surprise attack.
That lvl, a character too the 'walk on walls' ability. He stumbled into it and it was slain in less than a round... It didn't even have time for a villanous speech.
Thus, I would be the worst person to give you lessons on those levels.

lol i think the worst that has happened is at lvl 2 or 3 me and my party of 2 more similar lvls ran into a gargantuan monstrous centipede. It gored the wizard instantly not like low level wizards are good for anything really. then i cast protect from vermin and its gored me and the barbarian took it down utilizing the full effect of the spell. he still takes credit for it.....b*****d

LOL i downloaded OpenRPG and use the map utility. I load two copies. One on the main TV, one on my desk top.

The players see the TV screen and can see maps, ect, and i can edit the TV with my Computer.

I do want to get a Elmo Projector or maybe make one. Prolly end up making one so i can send the image downward. (I use Hex maps whenever possible)
