I wrote this one as a description for one of my arena submissions and got a bit carried away. ^_^;
Fee free to comment.

-----

There was once a summoner who trained long and hard each day. He studied the arts of his family and the ways of the world each and every day. Ever since he was little he wanted to summon his faithful familiar just like his grandfather and father before him. His father with his bear-like familiar and his grandfather with his very own tiger familiar!
Every day he trained and wished and trained and prayed. Each day training harder and harder pushing himself far beyond his limits.
Finally, the day of reconing came when he was to perform his summoning in front of his entire family. Of course, he had not yet been able to summon. He stood in the middle of the circle......nothing but silence......he began chanting and doing all the handsigns that he could remember when suddenly - there was a huge flash of light just above his head!
It was his avatar! He had finally summoned it! He turned around to see his new spirit and expected to see a lion or even a fox. Yet......what is this?! A bird?! How am I supposed to measure up to a bear and a tiger with a bird?! Then, with those words, the bird burst into flames! It fell to the ground, burning in an azure flame...burning......it rose to it's feet and uttered but a single word. "Nevermore."

It is said that the creature was a phoenix in it's truest form, but was never given a chance to show it's flames. It could not die, and out of compassion for it’s master, it still guards him today with the only thing it has left. It's very soul.

I'm also considering writing a followup story for my next arena submission. ^_^

Please keep all your chapters in one topic.

This one is quite a deal longer than the first one, but I think I did a little better.
-----
After losing his phoenix, the summoner was shunned and exiled from the arts by his very own family. So, without a purpose in life he wandered through the world, searching for a quest.

Years later, he had grown and become stronger. While wandering through an open field, he came across a pair of travelers dueling. He watched as the warriors clashed steel to steel, creating sparks with each hit. After what seemed like an eternity of fighting, the battle finally ended when one of the swordsmen roared like a beast and thrust his sword into his opponent's chest.
After the victor collapsed from exhaustion, the ex-summoner slowly approached him. The warrior turned and raised his blade to the summoner, despite his weakened condition. The ex-summoner announced, "Lower your blade, sir. For I shall do you no harm." With that, the warrior collapsed to the ground once again and proclaimed, "State your business, traveler." The ex-summoner replied, "I am but an exile of the arts, come to aid you with your injuries."
As the ex-summoner was healing the injured swordsman, he asked, "Why were you battling that other swordsman?" to which the warrior replied, "He and I were debating who would go slay the demon and it turned into a fight." The ex-summoner asked, "A demon? Why would you want to slay something so dangerous?" to which the warrior answered, "It is rumored to be one of the greatest demons in the lands. If I were to slay him, I would gain the respect of all of the villagers." The ex-summoner decided of his new quest. "Then I shall accompany you. I might not be as strong as you, but I can still be of assistance." The warrior bowed his head to the ex-summoner and thanked him.

After a few days of traveling through a dense forest, they came to the base of a large volcano. "This is it" announced the warrior." The ex-summoner stared up at the smoking heap of rock and magma. "Well, better get started climbing." stated the swordsman.
After scaling the treacherous mountainside, they reached the peak, only to find countless skeletons of men who had attempted to slay the monster. All of a sudden, a demon rose from the molten lava of the volcano and let out a roar. The warrior and ex-summoner prepared for the battle of their lives.
The demon let out yet another roar and summoned a flame of immense power to engulf the mighty warrior.
The summoner let out a cry, "What manner of beast is this?!"
He began casting spell after spell only to have them thwarted by the demon's powerful blaze. In a last ditch attempt, he rushed to the other side of the rim to snatch up the fallen warrior's sword and raised the blade to the creature. "Foul demon! Meet my blade!" He summoned every last bit of his strength and magic into the sword and swung it one last time to meet the demon's most powerful flame.

When he awoke, he felt strange, as if he weren't himself. He slowly rose to find that the demon had disappeared. He rose to his feet and noticed that there was a eerie, glowing, light around him, but he couldn't locate it. He heard a crackling from behind him and turned quickly only to see the view from the top of the volcano. He listened closely and looked up……"MY HAIR IS ON FIRE!" he shouted in surprise. He ran around like a maniac trying to put it out only to find that it was of no avail. While still recovering of from the shock, he heard a distinct swishing sound from behind him. So, once again he turned around but only found the sight of the forest beyond. He kept hearing the swishing sound and figured it to be a bird of some sort that he had failed to see due to his panic. He decided to sit down and think things over, but as soon as his bottom hit the ground, he felt a sharp shooting pain and jumped back up. "Did I sit on a rock?" he said, talking to himself. Bewildered that he couldn't find any rocks, he decided to sit down once, but heard the swishing sound once more. He looked around and saw something red out of the corner of his eye and turned to meet it face to face to find only the mouth of the volcano there. He saw it again and turned his head to look what it was……"A TAIL?! I HAVE A TAIL?!" he shouted at the top of his lungs. After the initial shock, he sat down to think, being sure to not sit on his tail again. "Hmmm. The demon's magic must have mixed with mine and caused me to become cursed by the flame itself." From nowhere, he heard a growling noise and looked all around, unable to locate the origin. The voice rumbled, "It seems you and I have become one, sorcerer." He then realized that the voice came from inside his head! It was the demon, and he was talking to him! "Well, wizard, I suppose I shall have to make due with this body. I shall assist you since you bested my flame. I am in your service."
The ex-summoner turned to look out across the forest and said with a smile, "I think things are going to be just a little more interesting from now on….."

How do you rate it?
PostPosted: Tue Mar 20, 2007 1:50 pm

domokun For example:

Part one: 7.5 / 10
Part two: 8.0 / 10

Just a rating thing. Doesn't have to be out of 10.
