I never had a chance to see this musical. Its a dark musical about a man who has a lovely wife and a beautiful daughter. The judge of the town he lives in is in love with Sweeney Todd's wife, and so, sends Todd to prison somewhere far away... essentially, Todd comes back as a sort of serial killer and his girlfriend turns people into pies. biggrin Sounds fun, ni?
Well, guess what kiddies... Tim Burton is making a Sweeney Tood Movie Musical starring Johnny Depp as Sweeney Todd. That's all I know about that.
All I can say is... I am excited. So very excited.
[not to mention this is one of the most ******** up storylines I ever heard of]

>> Only the blackest of hearts xd I love anything by Tim Burton, I love many things with Johnny Depp... and well, the two of them together have always made life tasty. That plot is definetly one I have never heard of, however, my mother would probably like it - and it brings up memories of Darkwing Duck (except Morgana turned people into jello, not pies). Can feel the purest of love <<

My university did a production of Sweeny Todd a year or two ago. Let me tell you, it was messed up, but it sure as hell kept my attention for the whole three hours. I think I was the only one in my class to truely appreciate it, being this plotline is straight down my crooked little alley.
Im not surprised that Tim Burton is going to make a movie out of it. This is right up his alley too. I just wish that he wouldn't touch this classic musical. The music and song in itself adds a whole new level of charm (and actually makes it halfway decent considering the content). If Tim Burton does this movie, chances are that Danny Elfman is going to do the music, and as great as Elfman is, he won't stick to the original score, which is a damned shame.
Sweeny Todd is a very very angry man... I wonder if Depp can play someone that angry...

Agreed.
I think, though, that with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Elfman lost some of his edge. Atleast I didn't find most of the songs memorable.
Still, I hope they stay true to the essence of the musical. I've heard several scores from the musical, and it chills me to the bone and makes ME feel like I am going insance.
Ah, I forget who wrote the scores... I know it starts with an S. >_<
How could I forget such an important name in musical theatre history? He and Webber stand on top.

Sweeny Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street...
Having a stage full of chorus hissing that in unison is just plain creepy.
Stephen Sondheim wrote it.

BTW, Sondheim is a genius. I wanted to say Songheim, but I knew it couldn't be that. XP
